Okay,

I'm from Denver. No, I don't like the Broncos.

I might be taking a 6-12 month contract in Charlotte. I'm not spending that much time away from my car.

What do you maniacs do for 1/10 touring around there? Looks like pickin's are slim. Not adverse to road tripping, but...........

Am I gonna have to get an oval or off-road :( ? Looks like plenty of that.

there are tons of offroad tracks in the charlotte area. you have the farm 2, crcrc, nitro valley, over cash. 1/8 and 1/10 gas are the biggest classes. touring car wise rosewood has the best track and its about 2-3 hour drive.

Cool,

how about that complex in Easley, SC - Carolina R/C Speedway?

I guess another problem is I'd rather keep spending on new gear minimal.

I'd get a 1/10 elec truck or buggy, but forget about gas/nitro. They're way cool, but I'm not going out and investing in a buttload of new gear to support it. I might even get an oval car - That looks like fun, but I don't know much about and don't know if I wanna start from scratch. Oval is a lot different than on-road or touring.

Get 1/10th electric 2wd stadium truck. You can either race it in the regular electric truck class with a 5 minute main or the new Pro Truck class that combines the electric and gas trucks together for 20 minute mains. CRCC, The Grove and NVR all support this great new class.

Cool,

how about that complex in Easley, SC - Carolina R/C Speedway?

I live in Concord (basically Charlotte) and do mostly on-road racing. Some of the tracks are a little drive, but if you need a car pool partner, and want to split fuel email me when you get into town. bmmelton@carolina.rr.com

Easley is 1.5hrs away from Charlotte. They run asphalt only. Goldsboro is the highest quality track in NC, they have carpet and asphalt, but like Pace said. It's just under 3 hrs. (Most fast competition is in Goldsboro)

Brandon,

If I get this gig it won't be for at least a couple weeks. It's Bank of America and their security screening takes a while.

If I do make it out there, I'll definitely take you up on the car pool offer.

I spoke with Glenn (?) today, and he's seems like a good guy and has a good program. I'd have to drop my EPIC B2 outlaw stock to race there, but that's okay. The tracks sound like they'll be a joy to drive on. I'm used to running very narrow lanes (6ft).

Some questions:

What kind of car and class do you run?
Could you get your mitts on good xray t1 setups (c-hub) for both carpet and asphalt?
What's the favored stock motor/builder on that track? Sounds like an RPM motor kinda track.
How involved does rubber tire choice become on the asphalt out there - compounds and inserts.
Do they get picky about ROAR-legal bodies?
Would I be insane to think I could get a ticket for the Coca-cola 600 (cheap)? I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but it would be downright UnAmerican to not at least try to take in a NASCAR event while I'm in town, dontcha think?

I run a TC4, but there are some guys at the track with an x-ray. I prefer mod racing, but it's kinda slow around here. 19T has become popular as of late, so that's what I have been running. They are not too picky about rules as long as you make weight and ride height. 4 mag stock motors are allowed, but usually not preferred. If you make it out here I'll get you hooked up with what you need.

Tire of choice for the asphalt is usually sorex 32's or 36's depending on the class and weather. The Takeoffs work fine but you won't get as many quality runs out of them.

As far as NASCAR, you would much rather go to the All-Star challenge than the 600. I go to the "winston" every year, $21 for gen admission. (after the firts six beverages, who needs a good seat anyway, lol)

Thanks for the compliment, I hate I don't get to race as much as I would like. January was just a bad month, weddings, work, big offroad race, etc. Hopefully I will be at Rosewood more in late Feb and March. Taking a week off after the snowbirds, so it will be the "bash" before I make it back.

If you need help up there with your X-ray, get with Rodney Mull about set-up, his x-ray is DIALED.

Wow!

Considering how nice you guys are to somebody who may not even make out there, the size of the welcome matt makes me want to get that Charlotte contract even more.

Rodney -

If I get the contract and head south, what I'll most likely need is something like this:

Gearing - how you gear your xray (EVO 2 I hope) for stock would be a big help.

Also how your shocks are sprung and oiled would be a major help.

I don't have to know "everything" about how to set up for the track - I love futzing with the car and don't mind taking the time to get the car dailed. However, knowing where to start would a huge help.

I'll most likely scare up a roar-stock motor before I leave. What kind of motor I get is open for suggestion. I'm thinking either an Epic Binary Roar Stock, Monster Stock, or P2K2, built by somebody (Brood, EA, or Putman).

But you say you know a thing or two about tuning stocks? Cool! Do you have a dyno? I'm interested. Tell me more!

Anyway, I do hope this contract comes through. It would be major-league cool hangin and racin with you guys.

So they have a "Roval" (road course built into an oval track)?

Cool!

My guess is it could be very fast.

tell me more!

To electric tuouring cars get to run any of the oval or do they stay on the infield?

Hows the grip on concrete? I've only run asphaly and carpet.

How do you gear (rollout?).

any general advice on setup?

How many people show up for stock and mod touring?

Do they have separate practice days/times for oval and touring?

I've never been there... I'm about an hour South of that track. I've been out of the hobby for a good while, but would love to nab a TC4 and get somewhat involved again just for fun. I emailed the guy to ask if they ever run the entire thing like the Daytona 24 hour race... he said they have, but it's rough on the cars... hard to get a setup which maximizes both parts of the track. My thoughts on that are; everyone has the same challenge... ya make the best of it and get out there and run.

I also asked him what is the width of the road course... he says 8-10 ft., which I don't believe... looks more like 6-7 to me, and IMO, that's too narrow even for 1/12th. He says the trioval is 20ft. wide. If that's true, then the road course for sure isn't 8-10. I didn't reply to him, but the next time I'm up there, I may go take a look at it.

I'm just not interested in racing in a shoebox... which is what that roadcourse looks like if you look at the video.

There is hardly anything going on at the grove anymore. If you are south of the grove, your best bet would be to look at Easley, they have an on road road course and oval track, as well as dirt.

There is hardly anything going on at the grove anymore. Have you raced there much? What do you think is the width of the on-road course?

When you say "hardly anything going on" what do you mean? Just curious.

Not much at all at the grove, you can tell that by looking at the walls in the shop.

Charlotte track is an "indoor" track with track condidtions worse than the worst of outdoor tracks. I heard they are fixing it, but who knows, in my honest opinion they have alot of $$ and no experience, and want to listen to everybody to make them happy, which is in NO WAY possible. Don't go there unless you have a gas vehicle.

wha?!!! brandon...tell me it aint true!! yeah, it's true. :D. gas is REAL popular down there. more so than electric. but i do plan on going down there this saturday for a little change of scenery. touring is my heart but the drive to goldsboro is just too much for me sometimes. so, until doo-ham cranks up agian ...i'll sling some dirt. besides they're having a points series in various tracks in sc, nc and maybe another state. i wanna get the xxx-4 primed and ready for this year's festivities!

A little update...........

My Charlotte contract seems to be getting closer.

It's a long ways from home, but it seems like there will be good company to be in.

I found a couple Xray guys who run down in Easley and that country. The stuff going on in Goldsboro seems way cool, too.

Should know more by the end of next week.

We are coming down to Charlotte the weekend of the 8th-10th. We are looking for an off-road track to run gas MT & stadium. Does anyone have a suggestion on what would be the best and closest track to run?

The big race this weekend is at Nitro Valley Raceway near Cherryville, NC that is hosting the 1st annual Blue Gray Race with qualifiers on Saturday 4/9 and the mains on Sunday 4/10.
