i have a peterboro canoe from midwest, and i am ready to add the ribs. the instructions say to soak the pieces in a 50/50 mix with ammonia and water. is this the best way, or would steaming them be more effective?
any tips/suggestions?
slat26,
There is no single 'best' way of doing it, only what's 'best', or easiest, for you. The 50/50 solution of ammonia and water would be terrible for me, can't stand the stuff (ammonia). Would it be easier for you to do the solution, or the steaming?

the solution would be easiest for me, but i agree, the smell is bad. would i be able to touch the stuff with my bare hands?
i am not very familiar with steaming so i best stay away from it, well ill give the 50/50 a go!

If the smell of the ammonia is the problem here is a tip , Take a PVC pipe (water pipe ) in the lengh of the planks you have , screw a plug in one end , put the planks in with the solution of ammonia and then screw another plug in the other end . I usualy put my planks in warm water and in a mix of 60 ammonia / 40 water and no longer than 6 hours . I keep the pipe in a upward position and I make sure it is full all the way . Keep in mind that you have to clamp the planks while wet and when they will dry they keep the form.
I hope that I was helpfull
