So about a week ago I bought a Lost xxx-nt to race at the local track near my college dorm. Well tonight I was playing with the car outside and running it around and tuning the engine with a friend and his electric car. Well we walk in side our dorm and the front desk assistant asked me about my car and i was like yeah i build em when i can. Well my friend was like its really cool its gas and fast. Then the front desk lady started looking and me funny and was like under the pledge of the honor code (usually when they start out a sentence like this your in big trouble) tell me if its true your car is gas powered and do you have gas in your room? And i was like of course....its my hobby and its gas powered....Well she got really offeneded and called a police aid and they searched my room. They took my car, gas and other assecories. Now I dont smoke or drink so I was highly offeneded at these actions. When i asked why she told me i broke the schools honor code because i had a flammable liquid in the room. So yeah, no car, no fun. Kids, do not buy nitro cars when you live on campus

Ive ran my car out around my campus, i had a cop walk into my dorm while i was tearing it down to clean it and he was asking so many questions. he even asked me if it uses gas and stuff but i didnt tell him it was in my closet. During finals week, i ran my rc18t down in the lobby and he saw it again. i dont think ill ever have problems with cops and rc at my school

You should've said it's Nitro, not gas. It's harmless hobby fuel(lies, but who cares)

trw
02-05-2005, 01:36 AM
actually it is somewhat harmless, i dont think its flammable to the touch of flame, however rapid compression will make it combust for sure, just make sure no one drinks it hehe

02-05-2005, 01:47 AM
The nitro we use will ignite at the touch of flame because it is mostly methanol. The nitro in top fuelers however (85%) will not. Pure nitro is very hard to ignite, however, because of the methanol content of the fuel it will ignite. Still far less dangerous than gas, though.

Actually, Nitro CAN be ingited with a flame. It has to be bigger that a match though, like a lighter or something. I know because some of the guys at my LHS were out driving around with their 1/8th scale on-roaders and they started doing "stunts". They lit a small pool of Nitro and were taking action shots of their cars going through the fire. I drove my xxx-s through it (fast, so as to not do any damage, which it didn't) and they took some shots of it. Don't know if they still have them though. Anyway, this is me just ranting, but Nitro CAN be ignited with a flame.

Ask them for the bylaws or code of conduct that allows them to take your property. The fuel is one thing, but the losi is another. Don't back down to them, a decent lawyer would have your losi back yesterday with an apology engraved on it.

djgrom
02-05-2005, 03:30 AM
Hmmmmm, I dont know if I would like having my nice chassis engraved with an apology althought that would be humours. And the reason i admitted to having gas in my room was because they asked me under the honor code. They wanted to search my room so if I had lied and then they found the gas, you get and honor code violation and a possibility of getting kicked out of on campus housing. But yeah I was talking with one of the front desk people later on tonight, and they said I will most likely get my car back on monday, which is okay cause i have to study anyways.

hahaha, it would amuse me to do that, but......probably not a good idea because she doesnt like me much cause i gave her a pretty hard time when they took my car. But yeah i got my bandit with me that i kept for awhile as a basher car so that is keeping me pretty decent.....but the xxx-nt man.....holy crap nothing compares

I can't stand the people who run residence halls. Most of them are such tools and will go out of their way to make your life miserable.

You always could have fallen back on the "yea the nitro fuel is in my room...its right next to the keg, couple handles of Captain, and the beer-a-mid we've been working on all semester". Then when they show up and none of thats there, tell the campus police that you bet the security guard also told them that you had a gallon of nitro in the room. :D

Backpacks are your friend and a 'don't ask, don't tell' (or 'ask and still don't tell') policy never hurt anyone in college. I can kind of understand the fuel, but I don't understand why the took the car. The thing that has always gotten me is that a fraction of the girls in the building have more flammable stuff in their rooms in terms of hairspray and other stuff, yet they worry about a gallon of nitro - go figure.

That such a crock considering all that flamable nail polish, and COMBUSTIBLE hair spray the ladies have in the dorms! Sorry that happened to ya bro, people are stupid!

Duster_360
02-05-2005, 12:06 PM
Sorry they took your car, but I suspect it could have been worse. Years ago I got busted with a single can of beer and both me and my roomate got evicted. It was the start of the winter quarter and there was no tolerance, no warning. They used us as an example for the rest of the dorm.

We were lucky, my roomate's uncle lived about 15mi away and we stayed with him for about 2 weeks. The guy who was counselor in that wing of the dorm knew we got a raw deal and found us both rooms back in the dorm where we stayed the rest of the school year, we just weren't roomates any longer and had to keep a low profile.

Hope you get your property back, if it drags on too long, I'd go find some legal help thru the student union. Unless there are explicit rules covering a nitro car, they shouldn't be able to keep it. You might not get it back until you move out. Good luck!

If they really won't let you have it in there, keep the gas in the trunk of your car or something.

dude, you need to take the front desk lady out at the knees with a garden shovel... Who is THAT bored and has that little to do that she has to rat on you for something like that?? Is that to say you cant have hairspray in your dorm cause you *COULD* make a potato gun?? Or you can't have air freshener? What the hell is wrong with your school anyhow??? What kind of rule is that? But I still say revenge for the desk lady is in order... she needs to be slapped. hard. repeatedly.

a single beer and you got evicted?! wow, that is really though. I was told this morning thati could definitly get my car back on monday so I am happy about that. I was also told I am probably not going tobe allowed to keep it here anymore though. ::shrugs:: ohh well, i have a friend a mile down the road with a nice big work shop, car will probably be happier there.

Duster_360
02-05-2005, 05:26 PM
Yep, a single can. What was funny, we put up no fight about it - heck, we were caught red-handed, we just quietly moved out. Anyway, I moved off campus after that year. Fast forward about 3 years to right after graduation - I got a letter from the college that said in reviewing our records, we have discovered that your dormitory room deposit was never refunded, so enclosed please find a check for your deposit plus interest. The old guy actually running the dorm retired a year or so after we moved out and nothing made in into their records about our getting busted. Roomate got his deposit back too. My Dad got a real laugh out of it when I explained what had happened.

Its great news you're getting your car back. I sure would be careful for a while - you may be getting some extra attention for a little while. Definitely, the shop sounds like a far better place to keep it and your supplies until you can do better, like off campus somewhere.

Most people when they hear the word "nitro" think of nitroglycerin. She'd probably called the bomb squad. Anyway, glad you're getting the car back.

Edit: not really stupid. just ignorance in a place of authority.

college is alright, its not so bad dont be so jaded by the story. I posted it because I considered it pretty humorous. I am not real upset about it, i was just mostly irritated that i got treated like i had drugs. The RA was just doing her job. I mean honestly i doubt they would keep my car after i told them the amount of money i spent on it. And it turns out that i get it back. and look at the bright side, i got my studying done so i am prepared for my tests so next weekend i can go race at the track.

hey man im in college to and i really hate RAs. Thats why I live off campus now cause dorms really suck. And I knew a guy who had a terracrusher in his room and no one cared. Nitromethane was the least of there worries. BTW what school do you go to. I go to oakland university in MI. Gonna make me self a mechanical engineer.

I got to Christopher Newport University in Newport News Virginia. I was looking at being an engineer but i am having trouble with the physics (I am a freshmen in third year physics due to ap's in highschool) And i would have told them it ran in alcohol but this is a dry campus so no alcohol allowed on campus

hey yeah actually I do. Stream hobby shop is about two and half miles down jefferson if you take a right hand turn onto coming from j clyde to i 64. And if your by the amc 24 theater your only two miles from my college Christopher Newport University. If you are ever in the area again you should give me some sort of message (aim Kinkrider1985) and we can meet up to race or something

To the younger crowd .. Please treat your fuel with respect , it will ignite with a match and the flames are almost invisible in the day light . I`ve been burned before (not with nitro fuel) and it sucks so bad . Don`t be tempted to "play " with your fuel .

Sheesh thats rough man. I had a go-ped like scooter in college and kept it in my dorm room along with the 2 gallon gas can. The authorities busted me, and get this, called a TOW TRUCK!!!! Bwahahaha!!! I had to go to the tow yard and pay 150 bucks just as if it were a car.

All in all I understand why they're nuts about flamable liquids. You've typically got 100+ kids in the building and a fire would be a disaster. Hobby fuel is dangerous, it'll light with a match, its nice and oily and sticks pretty well, its difficult to put out... So I can't blame the authorities on this one....

However I don't fault you for keepin it in your room. I've never had nitro catch on fire without me doing it. If they provided some sort of option it would be nice, but for me they wanted me to keep my scooter outside, in the snow/rain, with only a lil bike lock to protect it.

It seems kind of silly to me that you would want to keep your gas powered car at school anyway, don't you worry that it might get stolen?

When i was at highschool (weekly boarding) i had my electric cars in there with me, and once while sparying out the motor (while it was running slowly) i managed to set the motor spray alight!! - is was ace, the motor had these little blue flames all over it, i never told anyone about that, i dont want any trouble about that!!

- someone had a nitro as well, he was alowed the car in his room/dorm, but he had the drain the tank and leave the fuel in the back off Tech room in the "project bay"
-they tryed to tell him to put in the outside fuel locker, but after he sayed it has to bee keeped indoors, and that there was about 2 gall of petrol in the project bay anyway, they lett him leave it there.

No, i am not worried about it getting stolen, they only way to get into the dorm rooms is with an electronic keycard so no i am not worried about it getting stolen. And in further news about the incident. Today I got my car back, and then they ordered me to get rid of all the fuel by running it in my car outside.....like this was some sort of punishment. Anyways a quart later i am fueless but happy. Time to check the differential and clean the car up. I cant wait to get to the track this weekend the weather is supposed to be beautiful.

i had a similar thing happen to me in my dorm at LSU..I was running my 1/8th scare buggy in the parkin lot and i noticed the person at the front desk watching me..i didnt think anything of it..

Well the next day i got a knock on my door and 2 ociffers were standing by wanting to search my room..i asked why..they said cause i had gasoline in my room..i said I do not have gasoline in my room...they pointed to the gallon of Trinity MHP 30% on the top of my closets..and said..that looks like gas to me..i said..thats not gas..its koolaid...and they left..they didnt seem to worried about it..but i gave the person at the desk a piece of my mind

Well, if you want to get very ventureous, let them know just how flammible our fuel is. Ive done this, kinda not smart, but it will proove a point, and that is to pour a small amount on your hand and light it. It wont even burn you. Your hand will actually stay cold.
