Excellent idea. I've just about finished the Creole queen and I bought the drive for it from Dumas. It works, but I think your idea would be better. In order to get a realistic speed I've had to power it down about 75%.

I have found a good motor to use out of a 12 volt rechargrable weed eater, It is simular to a Grapner 700, people throw these things away all the time when the batteries inside go bad, the motor is still in excellent shape most of the time.

For bigger boats around 4', I use a blower motor from a wrecked Honda. You can buy one at the local junkyard for around $5. Honda motors seem to run the smoothest and quietest.

Not a bad idea. You can use just about any electric Brush Motor from any electrical appliance. VCR Capstan Motors are fantastic.

All you need to do is work out the RPM (No Load) by finding the KV.

Put the Motor in a Drillpress and attach motor terminals to Digital Volt meter. Spin up while holding the motor (shaft spins & generates volts). Gives you volts @ RPM of Drill. Find the KV by dividing the RPM by the Volts Generated. Times this by Volts of Battery & you have your non-load revs. :teacher:

Don't forget to check amps and likely nominal voltage of motor. Great for Scale Boats.

I have a small printout if anybody is interested
