View Full Version : Is it RC or R/C?
jeepinator2

I mean... it's not Radio/Control is it?
WTH is the "/" doing in there?
It is called a virgule (http://englishplus.com/grammar/00000140.htm) and it has no function whatsoever in regards to "R/C".
PLEASE make a note of it.

Mabey R.C. would be more correcter,
jeepinator2
03-20-2005, 11:49 PM
Definately. But still, just using "RC" is 100% correct.

Jeepinator! Only here for 24 posts and already raising controversial issues. Though, I don't quite remember you being so pedantic. Welcome back!

Main Entry: ped·ant
Pronunciation: 'pe-d&nt
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French, from Italian pedante
1 obsolete : a male schoolteacher
2 a : one who makes a show of knowledge b : one who is unimaginative or who unduly emphasizes minutiae in the presentation or use of knowledge c : a formalist or precisionist in teaching
Dang, I have honestly never seen that word before (or any variation of the root). Good job :D
What are your thought on r/c vs. rc?
rocknbil
03-24-2005, 10:08 AM
No one's ever said pedantic on FFH? How about diatribe? :D
From an internet perspective, R/C confused me at first too, it made no sense, but the majority of abbreviated references on most RC sites are erroneously expressed as R/C. Officially it should be R.C. as an abbreviation, but that would deplete the dots TRF needs so badly in his posts. So I think it was part of the Save TRF Drive Hard movement that migrated from R.C. to R/C.
R/C = the molar gas constant / Coulomb = 8.314472 m2 kg s-3 A-1 K-1 mol-1
Molar gas. Wow. :D

Chemistry aside, if we go to the source for rf transmissions, the FCC, we find that it's called R/C. (http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/personal/radiocontrol/data/bandplan.html)

Thank you. Pedantic is one of my favorite words. It clearly describes some of the people I work with. It goes along quite well with pretentious. :D
As for my thoughts on r/c or rc, it appears that "rc" would make more sense. Unless you belong to the "/ corporation" and make royalties based on it's usage.

Me too.
It's my mission to stop the "/" madness.
Today I played with my Radio Control car.
Today I installed a Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning system.
Today I used a Personal Computer.
It's R/C, but it's not H/V/A/C and P/C?
Can someone please explain why R/C is used? It makes no sense at all.

To distinguish it from RC, the "time constant" of a capacitor. Jeep, you're well versed in the field of electronics; I thought knew this. I'm disappointed.
"You race an RC?"
"I drive a discharging capacitor. Once this baby hits 88mph..."

To distinguish it from RC, the "time constant" of a capacitor.
:D OMG, How on earth would some one confuse RC (cars) with the time-constant of a cap? Like many things in the english language it is all about 'context'...I'm gonna stick to good 'ol RC. :p
Ohh and in most cases it would be something like 1/f=T=RC, I doubt someone is going to in the middle of something cap related just go 'rc'...but hey that's just me.

It's R/C cuz without the / there's no jump, and R/C without a jump to hit is no fun! Also without the / you would not have this thread you seem to love so much. FCC called it R/C, so R/C it is. Make a note. :D

We might end up with C\R someday.

Jeep! :) I haven't been around here in a long time either..
From http://internationaleflcafe.com/teachers-english-grammar-types-of-punctuation.htm I found this:
English language usage
The most common use is to replace the hyphen to make clear a strong joint between words or phrases
My guess is that the origins of R/C is that it started out as radio-control, then as per above went to radio/control to emphasise the "strong joint between words", and finally was abbreviated (incorrectly? perhaps, perhaps not) to just R/C.

Yup and yup! I've since moved to the other side of Canuckistan (heh.. Get Fuzzy reference, I love that cartoon!) - I've been in Vancouver for a bit over 2 years now. Last year I had a connection through Portland and "I wonder where Jeep is these days" came to mind as we were flying over the residential areas. :) Just getting back into R/C now since I'm finally in an area with a track.
Man, there's so many Certifiable RC Zone Addicts around now.. remember when it was a special thing? :)

Haha, it's you :D
So, do you have THE first Graphite RC10, I'm kind of confused? You've got a huge number of vintage rc10's also.
I think it'd be cool to put todays motors in the old school original rc10 graphite chassis and put it up against a FT RC10T4 with the exact same electronics, tires, etc and see how big of a difference there is in lap times, with the same drivers of course.
jeepinator2
04-18-2005, 12:23 AM
Yes, THE very first RC10 Graphite. I'd not be bold enough to go racing with the old 6 gear tranny. But I'd go with a Worlds Car, the last iteration of the original RC10.

Molar gas. Wow. :D
Am I a geek for knowing that it's the molar gas constant /Coulomb... It could also be over the speed of light which is roughly how fast mine will go one day when I can get time to fix it.
How come the magazine add on the left hand side has RC Car Basics and not R/C car basics?... The FCC should get onto that one :D

Was it that thing of resurrecting worthless old threads? The Anti-Christianity movement? Just too rebellious to bear?
Or, was it simply the revenge against the evil clown (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/evilclown.htm)?

Okay, to see if he's still around, whii don't wii start calling R/C R-C instead of RC, which to most people would be initials on a shirt or hankie... ie. Richard Cranium. I think there are enough wise people out there who wouldn't mind leaving dead threads dead but since it is open, lets bury new crap with it so that when we open in in 2009, someone new can laugh about it.

is it "min." or "min/"? Does "in a bit" or "shortly" mean "in this lifetime" or "whenever I freakin' get around to it?"
