What are the advantages of 1/8 over 1/10 and vice versa. (i.e. speed, hanling, looks...etc) i already know about price though...

Make sure your track is big enough for 1/8th before you get yourself one....a lot of big track are good enough for 1/10th but not 1/8th.
1/8th for sure cost more, cost more to run, cost more to maintain, cost more for almost everything.....but again, it is way faster then 1/10th, handles much better then 1/10th....and feel, sounds, looks better then 1/10th.

However, if you are new between 1/10th and 1/8th....try the 1/10th first. 1/8th is no plug and play, it will cost you a lot of $$$ if you are not familiar with nitro RC racing if you are starting on 1/8th..........most of the ppl I know, ended up selling their 1/8th within mouths and call it quit.

Wow, this topic isnt too popular huh, lol.
I am looking at a 950R. I am just curious if anyone is a parking lot basher, I am not very competative, just like to fly around. Also how is running 1/8 scale more expensive than 1/10 scale?
What would be a decent motor and radio for this car?
Thanks

Saboteur

This car is built for track performance. It will cost you over $100 for a decent setup if you plan to race. Cost wise it will be a bit more expensive than sedan to get started with, but in the long run these cares are quite more durable than a sedan. If you want to bash in a parkinglot, PRP makes an 8th onroad car that is a parking lot basher and RTR (ready to run). www.happytimehobby.com has it there.

Thanks Saboteur for the info. But, I already have the 950R. I really am not planning on racing. What would be a decent motor/radio package for this, not for comp. use but still be able to go fast. I am a speed freak :)
Thanks again

Saboteur

Go for the Mega package. It's $299-$349 depending where you go and comes with engine, one piece pipe, 3 carb inserts and I think a spare crankshaft (not sure on this item). For the price it's a pretty great motor. If you plan to run that car, run it on a track or a really BIG and empty parking lot. 8th onroads have a lot of acceleration although you can run pretty slow around a track. Regardless they will do a lot more damage to objects including people if they hit something.

Saboteur,
where would be a good place to look for this set-up. Also what radio would you recommend.

Thanks again

Saboteur
05-19-2006, 10:39 PM
www.acehardwarehobbies.com has it there and some other online shops. For radio you have your option. Either the KO propo, JR Z-1, Futaba 3pk, Airtronics M8/M11, or the spektrum DX3 radio will be fine. Just go spektrum with these vehicles and plug the rx pack directly into the rx.

I am sorry if this sounds stupid but, what exactly is a Mega Package and where would it be listed? What kind of motor is included with this package. Sorry to be a bother
Thanks for the info

AH HA, I found them. RB Concepts, has a nice package. I'll be looking into that one.

Ahh cool, thanks for the quick response. Sorry to be such a pain. I think I will just give BrooklynHobbies a call now, I am also bidding on a Spektrum DX3 NIB. I should be up and running in no time. I'll post pics as soon as everything is together.

You should give racing a try, it's lots of fun. I was a parking lot basher for years but then got a used 950 (not the 950R) 1.5 years ago and joined a local club. Racing around a track is so much more exciting than a parking lot. At first I hit a lot of boards and broke lots of parts. My driving skills are getting better and I just picked up a new 960. I am running a novarossi rex pr21r01wc but if I had to buy a new motor I would go with a mega because of price and good performance from what I've seen on the track.

Tig

Well Saboteur, good news. 1- I got a second chance bid on the Spektrum DX3, nice. 2- I also splurged and got the Mega Pack from Brooklyn Hobbies, should be getting it Wed.. oh yeah 3- I ended up bidding on a starter box and winning that to. This guy was really cool, he is actually a big fan of Serpant RC cars to.

rmd, thanks for the incouragement, I appreciate it. I will start off with some parking lot bashing and see where it brings me. I took a ride to RC Excitement yesterday, very cool place. 3 tracks(1 Nitro outdoor offroad, 1 electric indoor offroad and 1 electric indoor carpet, and soon to have a Nitro outdoor onroad), big shop and very freindly people (employees and customers). It was great to watch and help. We will see where I go with it, I have never been very competative with my cars. And now getting back into it from such a long RC vacation, lol, we will see. I dont want to jump the gun.
I will post pics of everything once I get them.
Thanks again guys

Tig,

I was not competitive either and also took a big hiatus from RC. Between 1997 & 2004 I only touched my RC cars maybe once a year, mostly playing with my old kyosho turbo inferno or superten. After back surgery in 2004 I had to give up the gym so I got back into RC and discovered a 1/8 club that raced locally. After one day of seeing those cars at the track I was hooked and ended up buying the used 950, novarossi, 3pk, hudy setup & board, tools, etc. I bought a hudy tire truer last summer. I am still one of the slowest guys at the track but I am improving. We had a lot of new guys join 1/8 this year but unfortutanely, for me anyways, they are all experienced racers and quite fast.

If you don't win the bid on the DSM radio just get a regular FM-PCM radio. With all the folks switching to DSM frequency conflicts are less of an issue and you should be able to get a radio cheap. Just get some decent servos with good torque.

Saboteur
05-22-2006, 10:09 PM
DSM has no conflicts. They operate on a higher frequency and can have upto 79 people running. Spektrum would be the better option.

Yes. I didn't mean conflicts with DSM. Now that everyone is switching to DSM there are fewer folks using FM and so the FM users are less likely to have conflicts.

Saboteur
05-23-2006, 10:10 PM
Thats true, but you still have conflict with other mad made devices causing interference. ;)

Tig
05-24-2006, 04:09 PM
rmd,
My hiatus was a bit longer than that, about 8 years longer to be exact. I havent touch an RC car in almost 16 years. I think I am having a midlife crisus, lol, j/k. I am finally able to afford these damn things. Granted I think I went a little too extreme when purchasing the 950R, but it just looks fun. I plan on visiting the track and scoping things out, meeting some people and making some friends. I will do that before I start to get into the racing scene, it is also very intimidating to me, not really nowing how to tune and all. I think I am going to get that DVD about Nitro tuning.
As with the Spektrum, I got it. I just could'nt let it pass. That is going to be my last purchase for a while. My wife is going to kill me if she finds out how much I spent in the last month on these guys.

Later fellas

tig,
a lot of what you say mirrors what I went through. I always loved RC but was poor and stuck with a large university debt for years. Now I have the cash but a wife to deal with :) She wasn't happy with all I spent getting into 1/8 onroad, but since the initial start my costs have been lower and she doesn't complain now. She didn't even put up too much a fight over me getting a 960 this year. She didn't understand why I needed a new car this year, but then I don't understand why women insist on things like changing a washroom sink because she doesn't like the color :)
I still don't know how to properly tune my engine, and I did buy the nitro tuning dvd. I'm still imitimidated by the racing but as my skills improve I feel less so.

Saboteur
05-24-2006, 07:11 PM
What I do is go out to the track and practice as much as you can. There are some 8th guys who are fast...having a fast car more like it, but just don't quite place that well in a race. GO out there n have fun! :)

Tig
05-24-2006, 08:06 PM
Thanks guys for all of the incouragement, I appreciate it. Now I just have to find an 1/8 scale track. The LHS that I am new to is going to be building an outdoor on-road track very soon, he said it would be a little small for the 1/8 scale car but would good for practice.

Oh yeah, rmd, women you cant live withem and you cant live with outem ;).
Thanks again guys, I will keep you updated as progress goes on.

You mean airfilter? Any one except KnN air filters will do. Those KnN don't filter all or most debris that well. The ellegi styles work great.

Saboteur, do you happen to know where I could get a schematic of the gear assembly that mounts to the motor. I am having a hard time trying to figure it out. The previous owner sent it to me in a baggy. Would this be in the owners manual of the 950R.
Thanks again for the help, I appreciate you taking the time out to lend a hand.

You got too much car for a parkin' lot, or just bashing around. Been a Serpent freak for almost 29 yrs. Better for you to find a local 1/8track, and polish up on driving. You are playing with the big boys now. Not too many Serpent on the parking lots. You invested too much for the serpent, to be on the parking lot. Come join us at the track!! Lot of veterans here that do help with the hobby. We all friends at the track.

Tig

where are you from t?
The one I have been talking about is and older Picco 1/8. Once I sell this Picco, then I will pay all attention to my 950R. There isnt any 1/8 tracks to be found anywhere near me, heck I dont even think theres a track in MA. I have never been into competition anyway, the parking lots I run at are HUGE, plenty of room and are pretty much newly paved. You know, I must say, I am a pretty good driver to :)

Major track near you, would be Engfield, Ct. ROAR affiliated. Good race when they have 75 people racing. Really it is too much to run a parking lot. Somewhere with a pemenent track. ROAR region 1, takes care of your region, and they just open a track i Ma. look up ROAR in web sight It'll give more info of track close to you.

Tig
07-06-2006, 08:03 PM
I will check it out.
If there is a track close enough, I would consider it. It would be very hard to bring the "competitor" out of me.
Thanks for the info T, I appreciate it.

Yeah really! you break the Serpent out, straight out of box, it's racing its born for. Second, at the packinglot, people wont like you, cuz you're too quick, it,s the top model in the world. look at www.ashfordfordhobby.com he's my dealer. I'm in the west coast. he may have a better deal. And parts, not a problem. or www.mytsn.com Serpent websight.

Well fellas, :( unfortunately the 950Rs are going to be for sale soon. I never thought it would be so involved. Its been quite a pain to be honest. I have so many parts and not enough time. If anyone is interested or knows someone who may be interested feel free to PM me or e-mail me anytime @ UMFBoston@comcast.net

Thanks

Saboteur
08-14-2006, 05:01 PM
Oh yeah. Definately 8th onroad there's a lot involved, but then again I'm just running my 8th onroad not far off from the stock Mugen setup and it handles rather well. Some say some settings matters most when driving these cars, but other than that they require the same amount of maintenance as nitro sedans. As for cost, you can get tires as cheap or close to the price of sedan tires though that requires knowledge of all the hot spots (to get them at). These cars are also a bit more beefier and more durable than sedans but then there is just one thing - they HIT harder too.

Tig
08-18-2006, 03:33 PM
They have been sold, qicker than I expected. :)
There sure is a lot involved, I have no clue about set-up or anything like that. Maybe some day down the line I will be able to really take the time to get more involved. Until then, I'll stick with my assortment of off-roaders and 1/12 on-roader.

8th onroads sell really fast. It's a growing class that draws a lot of attention. Also, most 8th owners just need a spare car for parts. It sure beats buying everything seperate.
