I am thinking of building my first Nitro MT from scratch. Not a kit, just all parts I pick. This will be my first build, but should keep me busy for a while. plus I tend to take a little more pride saying that I created something. So, that leads to my question. I need a parts list. Can anybody help me out?

mmmm.. not to kill your hope.. but you can't just take random parts and stick them together... specific ones are made to go with specific ones... =/

Dude, you're in custom-build land. There will be no set 'list' of things that will go together. You have to experiment, scratch your head, revise, and maybe try something else before you get it right.

Your nogin/noddle will be your biggest help. Use it! What do you have in mind?

Aluminum stock from the home depot, and a sheet of carbon fiber off ebay. You can also solder brass tubing together to make tube chassis, roll bars and whatever eles you can think of. :D

Heres a chassis I'm working on now.http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=62073

If you are talking about buying the parts of a particular truck and assembling. You can download parts lists and such from most of the manufacturers websites.

well, I have decided to go with a RTR at first. tear it down a couple of times, get familair with the trucks and nitro, then maybe come back to the custom truck. What I had in mind is taking a chassis of a truck with lots of after market. liek a tmaxx. then building it up. a mix of stock parts and aftermarket where I see fit. I used to work at a shop that built custom harley davidson's this way. you bought a frame from harley with an official harley VIN. then you picked the parts fromt he ground up. stock where you want, custom where you think a replacement should be. saves the money of buying the stock unit and throwing it out for an after market. But the nature of MT, it would be in my benefit to keep the stock parts as spares for emergency repair. so, an RTR and upgrade it is for now. seriously thinking of picking up a use done on the cheap that might need a new engine or soemthing. go ahead and get one upgrade done at least.

I just got some of this Ultrafuse, It's for welding aluminum, brass, and other metals. I just tried some out on some scrap aluminum and it's awesome, I bent the aluminum to a 90 degree angle after I welded it and it held up great, it's not going anywhere! The best thing about it is all you need is a propane torch. Heres a link to the stuff.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5966538283&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

Actaully, you pretty much can just pick parts and put them together, as long as they are all for the same truck.

IE: It's possible to build a Savage without using a single HPI part.
(Im not saying you actually can, Im just saying it's not impossible. Depends if all the parts are available from the Aftermarket.)

However, this is usually a VERY expensive way to build a truck.
Im talking at least 3 times the price of buying a stock RTR or Kit.

My advice: Search around EBay for a truck that is as complete as you want. IE: If you want to use a custom chassis, a Sirio motor and exhaust, and a JR radio system to build your ultimate MGT... then look for an MGT with a busted chassis, blown motor, and no radio gear. Then add parts from there.

Very true speedball, a guy at MHS has built a mini-t out of all aftermarket parts, all but one little losi part.

As for a "parts list", this is something that you'll have to think on. Chassis or type of chassis, (tube or pan), engine, trans, differentials, clutch, shocks, whther it'll be a solid axle front & rear, solid axle & IFS or completely independant. There's a host of other parts as well. Imagination, creativity, function should be your driving force!

Also, parts need not be from the same truck in order to work or work correctly, however, they must be coordinated and well thought out. If you have parts in question, do some research on those parts and see how they'll fit into your "game plan". I have "almost no experience" in scratch-building, this is just my 2 cents. :D :D
