Hello I'am looking for shims for my savage diffs. some for behind the small bevel gears to avoid them eating into the plastic case. they should be 4x12x0,1 0r 0,2 mm and some to get a better mesh for the ring and pinion they should be 8x10 or 8x11 mm or so, kyosho had these last once before but tower says thet are discontinued.
Does anyone know wich shims to use and where to get them? prefarably a place that takes international orders. (live in the netherlands)

all help is apricated

The smaller bevel gears are less likely to dig into the diff cups than the cross pins are. If you are still running diffs with two small gears, try upgrading to the new 4-gear setup (HPI Part #87193). It includes notched cross pins and longer, machine-thread screws to better hold the ring gear to the diff cup. Also, any time you open a diff, it's good to install a new gasket between the cup and ring gear. Though the gaskets only come with new diff cups, you can use the gaskets meant for the Ofna 9.5 or Hot Bodies Lightning buggies.

As you are in The Netherlands, there is a kit available out of Germany in which they use cross pins with the ends machined down that fit into metal blocks which fit in the diff cup slots. The kit also includes small shims like you are looking for, that go between the smaller bevel gears and the cups. I run a similar setup in my rear diff that was made by a friend here in the US, but it doesn't use shims inside the diffs. It has held up very well and I've read that the guys in Europe who use the German mod in their diffs have had very good results too. I'm sorry that I do not have a link to the place which sells the German mod, so hopefully someone around here will have a link.

Thanks Kitty , I know about kit you mentioned. They sel it in the netherlands but onlyas a complete set including gears and cups for an amazing 75$ per diff.
A little too much for my budget. I've founs a place that sells the shims for beheind the small gears but the still ask about 1.5$ per shim. that would be the same price as a new cup set.
Do you maybe know a place where to get loose shims?
Wich shims do you use to get the crown and pinion mesh wright? mine seem to have quite a bit of axial play.

P.S. I'am having the 4 bevel gears diff (new ss 4.6)

Goodness. I didn't know that they are charging that much for the complete kit. The price they are charging for the internal shims is a crime too. It's only pieces of thin sheet metal cut into little squares and holes punched in them. I read something not long ago by a guy who made his own using some really thin metal sheet. He cut the squares out with household scissors and used a paper hole puncher to punch the holes. It probably cost him $1.5 for the entire sheet of metal.

For shimming the pinion to ring gear (crown gear) play, as well as for side-to-side play, everyone I know uses shims from Kyosho part #KYOC5573 (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0095p?FVSEARCH=KYOC5573&FVPROFIL=++&search3=Go).

Another option that some guys are going to now is using the diff cups from the Hot Bodies Lightning Pro. I'll send a PM to a guy I know who uses them so he can post details about them. We'll try to get you set up =)

thanks for the ref kitty..

honestly, the best thing to do at this moment..

copy from my original make up on the old playground..

it is hard plastic, the shiny spot is the steel insert..

you will also require new bearings for this cup, the HPi 8x16x5mm #HPIB085

this thing is as hard as aluminum and costs nothing vs aluminum.. the cup is under 5$ each, 2 bearings are 5$ so 15$ total...

now where you live you do no thave hotbodies, sacker is what i beleive they are called there.. BUT mugen, kyosho diff cups for the buggies are the same, just cost more here..

now for shims.. go find a shim kit for a buggy... it uses all the shims a buggy would in the same manner..

Thanks for the help,

I've found the original german site Kitty mentioned and the sell a complete kit for 2 diffs including some shims for about 55$ that's not too bad for europe. they also have a great shim set. 10pcs 4x8x0,1 10pcs 6x12x0,1 and 10pcs. 8x14x0,1 .
They have some great stuff. You can see MT racing is starting to get big in germany

CRS: Thanks for showing up with the info! One thing I can't remember about changing over to the Lightning cups, though - does that require turning down the bearing seat on the ring gear, or was that another mod?

Opel: $55 isn't too bad for Europe. Other parts cost more there in spite of the Euro being worth more than the US Dollar. I think a lot of them are actually stepping down in truck size to MTs like the Savage, etc. They've been racing those huge FGs over there and they spend way more on parts for those.

Well the FG marder is still very popular around here. the parts are more expensive but they hardly ever brake and a new marder race costs about 930$ here that isn't so much if you keep in mind that the old savage ss 25 stil costs 725$ !! and once you have a marder you only pay about 1.7$ per liter of gas instead of 12 $ for a liter of nitro fuel. Buit it looks like the smaller trucks are getting more popular

I was under the impression that the smaller trucks were gaining in popularity because of so many parts being broken on the Marders. That's what I've read from the guys in the UK where they are pretty popular. You are right about when it comes to fuel cost between the two, though I don't know what kind of "mileage" the Marders get. Just over $2 per gallon here for gas and I pay right around $23 for a gallon of O'Donnel 20% nitro fuel.
