View Full Version : April 2005 Best Paint Competition
Piggy89373
04-01-2005, 09:03 AM
The Best Paint competition will be open for entrees for the month of April and will close at Midnight (EST) on Saturday, April 30, 2005.
Restrictions: None.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
Each area will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. To often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the cars chances of winning. Please limit your entries to 3 photos per car. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention for the People Choice.
The winning body may be chosen to appear in Radio Control Car Action!! RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any Car may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any Car submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Please refrain from insulting bodies in anyway.
6) No restrictions, paint from your imagination.
7) 3 entries per person.
8) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
9) Imagination is key
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
This month, the winner from the March competition will judge the Paint competition. If the judge cannot perform his/her duties, I will select a replacement judge.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If the aforementioned comments are made by a contestant, their entree will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permited to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Next months Best Paint Competition will be the tribute to the person who's inspired you.
Let's show off your talents and have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Sorry Phil, but it's actually in your best interest to avoid your fiery background and take the body outside in good lighting. The dark background actually detracts from the colors you've used.

I already sold the body, so I am not able to re-take the pics so I replaced it with the B4.

Four days into the competition and already we have four outstanding submissions! ZenMoto definitely has his work cut out for him.
Farwar, regardless if it's your first or 300th body you painted, it's still a great looking paint job. Just remember, it doesn't matter what other people think, it's what you think and what you've learned from it that matters most. ;)

Wow. All great entries so far! I do not envy ZenMoto!
Phil: the work on the hood of that Skyline must have been pretty hard to do over the louvres part. That's a quite nice looking job! It's a bummer that you didn't save the original pics of the buggy body so that you could post them without the blacked-out background. The work (as usual) is great, but the black does detract from the paint work, especiall around the edges.
Farwar: FIRST time airbrushing? Dang! Good use of colour =)

Is that the Createx AutoAir paints you are using? If so, do you use the body for racing or show and, does the Createx adhere well to the lexan?
snifnfumes
04-05-2005, 12:11 PM
It's regular createx, although I do use auto air at times.
It's basically faskolor and yes it holds up quite well.
The body was sold, not sure if he's using it as a race body or not.
I have painted both types of bodies using the same paints though.

Good to know. I have a butt load of Createx colors just sitting around collecting dust 'cus I didn't think I could use them on lexan.

Hey Scorching, welcome to RCZ! I'm glad that you decided to show your work over here too. You'll find a lot of camaraderie (and plenty of well meant ribbing) with/from the other painters around here as well as spectators like me. I'm still drooling over your latest work.
snifn, I don't see the checkers you referenced in the description for your latest display. I definitely like what I see, though. It's too bad they can't use designs like that for NASCAR vehicles because they'd just cover it up with sponsor decals because that would look HOT on a 1:1 race car.
Of the two RC boards I frequent, this forum is by far my favourite. I get to see all sorts of fantastic paint work that make for gorgeous vehicles. Just wanted to share that with all you guys =)

Close guess TRF drive hard! Its a regular TRF415 not the MS. Althought I must admitt its pretty hard to tell if it is a MS when it's under a body as the MS almost looks the same as the regular TRF415. I think the MS has the white low friction belts though.

Kitty it is not a cup or a mug, but my friend the Bobble head tiki computer god. I once was writing a journal entry, when my computer frooze and deleted all my stuff. Since then I bought a tiki that protects my hard drive.
I am very superstitious about certain things! For example: the tiki likes to sit in front of the monitor not behind, ontop, or away from the screen. Everytime I move him something bad happens. Another example of bad shite happenning: Last night I was waiting till the last possible moment to bid on some supermaxx (unlimitedengineering) CVDs. Well before I bid, I thought it would be funny and take pictures of him for this forum. Well, after this I forgot to put him back "in front of the monitor"; when I went ot bid on the CVDs my computer frooze and I missed the auction completely! They ended up selling for 20.00. Talk about a steal.
Either way lesson learned, and no he is not a cup!

Kitty, Thanks for the laugh. I love the reply! The 'pig skin on acid' is the same technique as many use for carbon fiber. Wal-Mart special: shelf liner. Normally I hold it much tighter to the body, but this time I held it a bit loose. I've used that stuff with many different color combonations and it came out looking different each time. This one was Hot Fluorescent Pink and Fluorescent Purple.

The paint scheme used as a base, was that done using a plastic bag ro something similar? I've been planning on trying that out to see what kind of affect it would produce and the close up you provided makes me even more eager to try it on my next body.

Comp looks great so far. I got an exact replica body shell of the 2001 MG ZS british touring car on the way, planned for the 'inspiration from a real car' comp next month, but it looks like that's changed. Its almost finished and I managed to salvage some perfect MG decals off ebay no less, as well as a wicked lighting kit. This is the only thing left to do, along with my own personal touch, but I wont give that away yet! You'll love it, trust, especially if your a BTCC fan.
Oh yeah, just thought I'd mention, this season, HPI racing has entered a lime green IS200 into the btcc... would make a cool authentic RC car body?
Look out for my post of my MG, with comparison images of the real car.

Air Boston: Thank you very much for the PM reply and for the reply about the "pigskin on acid" technique. Who'da thunk you had used the carbon fibre technique to get that effect. I was pondering that a few days ago - using different colours and not holding the drawer liner down so tight. Now I know what it produces and I love it!
Leadfoot: Dang! Dude, you do some of the cleanest/sharpest cut lines I have ever seen. The blue combination marbelised effect (if that's what effect/technique you used) is stunning. It makes me think of a crystalline quartz structure that has been dyed under heavy pressure. Absolutely gorgeous!
Pooey. I got a decent airbrush for x-mess and Piggy has been on my back to get going with it, and now I have a ton of work to do around the house that will keep me busy for at least two more weeks. Between the heavy (but kind) urging by Piggy and seeing all of the sweet paint jobs in this contest (as well as others posted outside the contest) lately, I am itching big time to get out the airbrush. I may save this entire thread for when I do get time to start using my airbrush. That should keep my spirits up as I learn. There is so much talen around here to inspire me!

OK here i go. I hope the pic will work !!
This body i did for HARM, a german manufactor of 1:5th scale modelcars. They show it at the Toyfair in Nürnberg.
Body: HARM BX-1 Offroad Buggy
Size: 1:5
Mask: All Liquid BD, handcut
Inspiration: Some pics and own ideas
Colours: Faskolor, i used Faschange RED,Faspearl RED,Fascent RED, Fascent Candy RED,Fasfluorescent RED in the red areas, the blue is one coat of Fasglitter orange/silver, Fasblack droped shadows and a mixture of several coats with Fascent BLUE,Faspearl BLUE, Fasblue and Fasfluorescent blue,
and the stripes are made with Alcad Chrome.
Many many colours but it looked really good in the "special-light" on the fair !

I haven't seen this many entries in quite some time, much less the quality of each one. I think a big part of the judging is going to come down to picture quality, background used, etc on this one. I have yet to see an entry that I wouldn't want to own.

Gene, quite the opposite. Think of it as being judged against these fine works. It's about the challenge and learning new techniques, and bragging rights at the end when you find out how well you did. I'd rather be judged against 20 great entries than 3 mediocre jobs.

Proline stratus 3.0, 190mm, All rattle cans... metallic black, candy red, yellow, sprint white, candy purple, tamiya copper, tamiya gold, indy silver...man this thing took forever to paint. :P Hand cut masking tape, all of it... flames are a variation of marbling technique but using swirls instead of blotting and using 3 color to bring out more of a flame look. Stripes are candy red with candy purple shading fade with out lines, backed with silver and golden tips are copper fade inside of a gold frame.

This is my Tamiya M03L Mini Cooper.
I've gone for a retro style for this body.
The paint used was Tamiya Black & Tamiya white and the yellow window tint was paint usually used for lead lighting.
I used frisket paper to mask up the skull & crossbones, got the design from the internet.
The wood paneling was done using 2 different shades of Contact wood finish, basically a sticky paper with wood printed onto it (currently have no idea how to airbrush a wood finish), the beauty of this is that when the wood paneling gets scuffed from racing I can just cut out a new set of panels and stick them on.

Nice work everyone. ...that's 36 entries in my spreadsheet so far!
I HIGHLY encourage everyone to go through their entries and post any missing information! The things that need to be included are:
1. Body and chassis manufacturer and size. (make, model, size either in scale or mm)
2. Paint used. (please list the colors used)
3. Masks used (hand or precut)
Unfortutnately, I'm not a professional painter (I don't even own an airbrush) so I don't know a lot of the lingo (had to read through the entire post again to realize that "BD's" is a type of liquid mask.
Because there are so many entries, and the competition is fierce, any time there is a draw between two or more entries, the one with the most accurate information will get the nod.
To quickly review the information I have on your entry, you can view my checklist here:
April Paint COmpetition (http://www.zenmoto.net/rc/paintcomp.htm)
The photos are only linked in for my reference when going back over the entries for judging.
Thanks everyone, ...and get those last minute entries in! :)

Thanks Piggy. The shading on the checkers is a custom mixed gray. I use Auto-Air Transparent Black and White to mix. Not sure of the exact ratio, just mix till it looks gray!

Zen,
nice job on the spreadsheet. Definitely something all judges should adopt. Would you mind making it public?
Also, FWIW, I used all liquid mask and hand cut everything.

I know it's not much but I like the colors.
Pro-Line CTS-V
Tamiya Translucent Orange Backed with Tamiya Copper
Pactra Indy Silver
Tamiya Wing
The body is 190mm
The chassis is a Team Losi XXX-S
The masks are 3M blue masking tape hand cut
The wheels are Pro-Line Wabash with HPI Advan tires
The stock wing mounts were cut off and covered with a piece of the stock wing with the mounting holes for the Tamiya CF pattern wing drilled in it
The centers of the plastic wing mounts were cut out
All paints were spray cans
That enough info? ;)

Since it doesn't seem that I can edit my post, my hpi miata body that I submitted on page two of this thread is a body for the tamiya M-04m chassis or the hpi mini touring car chassis. The wheelbase is 225mm but they don't specify the width or scale of the body on the packaging. They are slightly smaller than 1/10 scale bodies.

zen moto,
I reviewed my information for my entry on your spread sheet and seen that I forgot the size of my body. It is a 1/10th scale Associated B-4 body. And that should give you all the information needed on my entry.
Thank you..

Thanks guys. I'm not deducting points for not having body size etc, it just helps me to judge the paint job if I know how many colors were used, and if your masks (liquid or tape) were hand cut or pre-cut masks etc. The good news is I love and own, touring cars, buggys and trucks; so I don't have any preference to one over the other ...this is going to be tough to judge!!!
If anyone wants, after I post the results next week, I'll make the excel .xls file available for download so the next judge can use it if he/she wants.
All the entries are outstanding, and nobody should feel disapointed if they don't win. ...there is some fierce competition this month!
There are a few hours left, let's see those last minute entries! ... Iknow there are a couple people out there sand-bagging to the last minute! ;)

Ok, I was up until 2am last night working on this; I have tried to be as fair as possible. This was a much bigger undertaking than I had expected so I want to make a couple points before I post the results.
I didn't deduct points for a lack of information, however, it was not possible to add "weight" to my judgement on some of them without it, this could have hurt some people's scores. (all information entered prior to this posting was taken into account).
"Detail" is basically undefined from a judging point of view; touring cars and trucks have an advantage over buggys because they have real-world associations (grille, lights, bumpers, etc). Because of this, I gave added weight to the complexity of paintwork on buggy bodies; if they went the extra mile, they got added points on detail.
As I'm not an airbrush guy, I don't know what techniques are more difficult than others. My judgement was based on aesthetics and execution over technique as I don't have the base knowledge to say "Wow, that was really hard, and yet they pulled it off!". I think this worked out to be the most fair way to judge.
Finally, I need to say the following:
We had a 3 way tie! Yes, three entrants came up with the same final score, but I didn't want to leave it that way. In the end I awarded a bonus 0.1 point for the entry (of the three) who had the clearest photos showing their work in great detail. I then added a 0.05 point to the score of the entry with the next clearest photos.
I felt, that even though the other 2 paint jobs may be better in real-life, that's not something that I can decide with the images I had to work with. I know some people had difficulty posting larger, or clearer images, but that is all I had to go on for judging. I simply had to give the nod to those who were unable to hide their potential mistakes on account of the clarity of their presentation.
That said, here are the top 3 finishers:
2nd runner up is gene465 with his beautiful Protoform Nemisis body. Gene, I know you had troubles with your photos, but man, that is a beautiful car!!!
1st runner up is Rymin929 and his killer Associated B4. I LOVE the paint on this body.
And our winner is Phil Manro and his amazing HPI Nissan Skyline. Phil's was the first entry, and set a high standard for others to follow. The exactness of the chrome pinstriping, and the effect of his shading to add dimension to his graphics were extremely well done.
Everyone should be proud of their entries, this was a bear to try and sort out.
Congratulations to our winners, and everyone who competed! Not a bad looking body in the bunch (and there were 37 entries).

Wow you got this judged quick! Great Job you had your work cut out for you as there were alot of exceptional entries! The spread sheet with links to all the pictures really made it easy to go through the pics! You have set a standard for all of the rest of the judges! Appreciate the kind words on my entry as it was my best body yet. I hope to enter many more and hopefully figure out the whole picture thing! Thanks again Gene

Wow... Zen, you had a really tough job to do, but you pulled it off like a champ. I feel that you were very fair, objective and professional in your judging. If we ever go to a panel of judges around here, I'd vote for you to be one of them. Major props to you, bro!
ps - just noticed that on your "april_comp.htm" page, it lists Phil Manro as the painter of the 1st runner up B4 body, but in the results a few posts up from this one, it says Rymin929.

Thanks Kitty. I think you misread the htm page. Phil's B4 was the second entry in the competition, but Rymin929's B4 (entry 15) was the 1st runner up; it is highlighted in yellow. The spreadsheet was done in the order the entries were received. Rymin929 was in fact the 1st runner up.
Frankly, there were so many damned good entries that I was racking my brains all night trying to get the scoring even! lol
Thanks again guys, and once more, congrats!!!

Zen, exceptional job!! Thanks for stepping up to the plate, for judging fairly and in a very timely manner. Unless you have a problem with it, I plan to use your spreadsheet as an example for future judging.
Phil, from the first body you put up on here, all of us knew you had some serious talent. This win was just a matter of time. Congratulations on a hard fought and well deserved win.
To all the contestants, I can't thank you enough for all the hardwork and beautiful contributions. Even if you didn't win, there was a lot of exceptional pieces entered this month. Any one could/would win had there been less capable painters entering. It's that kind of hardwork you all have provided that keeps this board where it's at. Thank you again, and congratulations to all.
(I can't believe we had 37 entries!!!)

You're welcome, and congrats Phil. You did a great job and deserved the win!
Is there a place online that shows how to use the liquid mask? I'd especially like to learn how you do your pinstriping so clean and uniform around the graphics?
Thanks, and congrats again!

I just draw the design on the outside and cut the liquid mask by hand with an x-acto knife. If you drag the knife holding it high instead of actually trying to cut the mask my gripping the knife low and hard, the knife will take a naturally straight line on its' own.

So you basically cut the graphic in the mask, then paint, then cut an outline out of what's left of the mask and spray the new color (in your case chrome)?
I've never used liquid mask before. I am dying to give it a try though! :)
Thanks Phil.
