I just bought a new Revo chassis without the engine and electronics. I just need to install the electronics, servos and engine to get it running. I already have the radio gear and some spare servos but do I really need the OptiDrive and the Micro servo? Will it still run without those two things?

yes, but you cannot shift in reverse, and you must have an FOC or a way to lock the tranny in forward.

the opti-drive is NOT necessary. you do need a servo for shifting. I'm not too sure where you could mount a std servo but you can pick up the micro servo pretty cheap off of ebay. The FOC is a pretty good upgrade to consider if reverse is not needed.

So I need the micro servo to shift into second gear or do you mean shifting into reverse? I might install the FOC kit since I rarely go in reverse anyway.

The micro servo is for shifting into reverse.
