View Full Version : How to paint a race body?

I've noticed that the pros seem to use bodies that do not have decals for the headlights, front grille, or tail lights. Instead these details are airbrushed. However, they still use sponsor decals all over the car (on the hood, sides, trunk, spoiler).
I was just wondering if there's any real reason for this. Should a body that's used for racing not have those stickers?
Thanks
(just another one of my getting ready to race posts)

It's a matter of the painters preference. It gives him or her a chance to further personalize and add more detail to their work. I give the painters who paint the tail lights, headlights and grill a bit more respect. It's a great finishing touch.
Also, adding stickers after a paint job tends to cover up any small blemishes or mistakes, but can also add a slight touch of realism.

thats call custom paintjob, in a way it seems like a real race car with this parts been paint like in racing cars...if this is what you make reference to...
anyway its a cool touch painters give to their works of art
Saving weight is a good habit, even just a little bit. But for most guys, it doesn't make enough difference with a few stickers. It's mostly personal style to paint headlights and even better if it goes with the rest of the paint job. As for decaling/stickers with sponsored logos; the top guys have these stickers because they are compensated for putting them on the cars and wearing the hats, t-shirts, etc. I know some national level guys and they said they will NOT advertise for free! Makes perfect sense.

Thanks guys, I was wondering if it was a weight/aero-dynamics thing or just a style thing. I think I'll be putting on the stickers until I get an airbrush. ;)

If your going to a track to race against sponsored drivers, I would leave the decals off. I mean why should you pay to advertise for them, when others are getting paid, or at least getting free stuff for it?

I'm strictly refering to painting instead of applying the head light, grille, and tail light stickers. I only mentioned the sponsor stickers as a contradiction to them if it was for aerodynamics or weight savings.

I like the looks of bodies with the head/tail lamps and other details painted on. It takes some skill to do that and really gives the bodies an extra touch.
What about making stickers that say "this space for rent" to put on your racing shell? :D
