View Full Version : May Best Paint Competition 2005 - Tribute!

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of May and will close at Midnight (EST) on Tuesday, May 31, 2005.

Restrictions: Tribute!!

The goal of this competition is to honor those who have inspired you in some way to paint. This can be accomplished by imitation, mural, portrait, etc. This can be a tribute to a person(s), place, book, movie, television show, etc. It’s all about saying thank you to those who’ve given you so much.

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

Each area will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. To often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the cars chances of winning. Please limit your entries to 3 photos per car. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention for the People Choice.

The winning body may be chosen to appear in Radio Control Car Action!! RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any Car may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any Car submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Please refrain from insulting bodies in anyway.
6) Paint from your imagination.
7) 3 entries per person.
8) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
9) Imagination is key

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut).
Who/what inspired the paint scheme.

Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.

This month, the winner from the April competition will judge the Paint competition. If the judge cannot perform his/her duties, I will select a replacement judge.

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If the aforementioned comments are made by a contestant, their entree will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permited to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

Next months Best Paint Competition will have no restrictions.

Let's show off your talents and have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Since you opened it a day early, I'll enter it a day early. :D

Body: Hellion 190mm prototype
Paint: Createx custom lime green, gray, black, white, yellow, tan, light brown, red, orange, pthalo green and Alclad chrome....I think that's it ;)
Mask: All hand cut in liquid mask except for the ghoulies that I cut out of paper
Inspiration: It should be pretty obvious, but this is done for Charlie Barnes. His talent and execution are second to NONE and he has had a huge impact on the RC painting biz.

As a lot of you guys know, I'm a huge fan of Charlie's work. Leadfoot, I gotta say that you nailed the tribal (spikes?) "floating" over the background. That effect is the number one thing I love about Charlie's work. Wonderful tribute, bro! I love the little spike/swoosh thingies on the rear quarter windows. I'mma have to copy that one.

I was just about to ask what's up with the top of the windshield in the first picture, but upon closer inspection, I see it's a reflection of something in the background.

ps - I ate your spider. I covered it in chocolate first. It was yummy.

Let's see some more, step up and give something back to those who've inspired you!

lol kitty, i was just thinking the same thing bout the spike, looks tyte, flows with the body. I like the unpainted doorpost too, makes it seem more "open" i think. definetely a skillfully painted body

Great to see the new competition is open... just hope there are as many entries as last month!
Anyway, I was hoping I could post my MG ZS 2001 again, as a tribute to MG Rover after collapse, and their legendary driver Anthony Ried. But this time with some much better photos of it; with the lights on at night, and some daytime track pics. (as these let me down last time) I will post it anyway cos I know you will love the addition of my Xbox decals... otherwise its as close a replica to the real touring car as possible. Hope it still gets ranked Piggy!
Good luck to all, and get those bodies finished

OK, here's my tribute body, I hope Phil is a NASCAR fan!
Body: HPI EL Camino
Bob Dively mask: hand cut
Paint: Faskolor Black, White, Silver, Fasflourescent Red and Spaz Stix Chrome.
The paint job is a tribute to Kevin Harvick's #29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet. The Goodwrench, #29, RCR, #3 and the graphics are all painted.

Well simply reading this thread has inspired me to have a crack at painting my new Skyline GT-R shell. I am thinking chrome liquid effect on the front with black shadow over purple metallic with some blue lines somewhere. :)

er.... what would that be a tribute to??

Piggy89373
05-06-2005, 07:33 PM
Jimbow, that would a tribute to NASCAR, more specifically, a vehicle that inspired him to paint. Race car graphics have always been a big inspiration for many RC painters, and this is no exception. That's the first time I've seen Adrc paint lettered graphics, a fine tribute to racing cars and racing in general.

Nemesis, instead of keeping us in suspense, paint it and post it. Show us your tribute! (Welcome to the boards!!)

This body is a tribute to a few that really pissed me off over the years, which resulted in the creative juices to flow and the paintjob reflects how I feel every time I hear or see these rear-holes. It's a tribute to them, because othervise I would not try so hard to come up with stuff that shuts them up.

Is there something wrong with trying to emulate Mike Lavalle's style? It's a great technique, not so easy, and from what I have seen everyone's unique style adds to the technique. I really like that Demon paintjob, I'd say it's a tribute to Mike? Hopefully I'll have one of my own to post after this weekend.

FINALLY I get to see a RC shell done with a real fire paint job! Major props to you, Seb! I see a lot of freehand work there. Serious droolage, bro.

Has the shell been used on the track already? Just curious because one of the upper front teeth of the demon looks like it needs dental work, so I was wondering if that is from the body seeing a scrape at the track or if it was done that way on purpose. At any rate, I kinda like the effect. As for the rest of the paint, I love it. If I had to sum it all up in one word, that word would be "daayammmm!" =)

geesh...touchy aren't we. My comment was directed at the fact that Rides featured Lavell the night before he posted his Demon paintjob. I saw it and I though it was extremely cool. Hello,

Seb here. I just wanted to let everyone know that I was painting the "real fire" a few months prior to having seen the TV show. I saw the show myself 2 or 3 days ago and it was kool to see how these flames get painted from the outside, at which I suck so much.

Paints: Pactra's Metallic Green, Transparent Yellow, Pearl White, Transparent Charcoal, Dark Blue Metallic and Medium Blue Metallic; Faskolor Orange and Faskolor Red.
Body: Proline's Alfa Romeo 2.0 on X-Ray chassis
Masking: Handcut Bob Dively's
Tribute to: CharlieB for the mist swirls, screaming faces, marbling colors and drop shadows.
Cosmo for the pearl white and yellow background.
Calvin3 for the flame style. It's my first attempt at flames and an emulation of Calvin3's tribal flame.
HauntedMyst for the marblizing.

This is my latest inspired by all the talent in this forum. I would never have tried anything like this a year ago, and before I found this forum I hadn't used my airbrush in over 10 years!

I learned a lot doing this one, and if I get a better one this weekend I'll post. I attempted 'true-fire', wanting a gas explosion look, but used too much transparent and not enuf solid red/yellow for the flames, so when I backed it , it pretty much turned orange.

Tamiya and Pactra paints, hand torn masks.

Charlie, no, it's me (and many others on here) who can't express their gratitude enough to YOU. You've been a tremendous influence to many of us here on the boards, and in the US RC car painting industry. I cannot say "thank you" enough for your patience and willingness to pass on your knowledge to us weekend hacks.

For me, it was an easy decision to whom to paint a tribute. There's a small group of die hards on here who've time after time helped out anyone with a question. This was my chance to express my sincerest gratitude to those folks. Thank you Charlie, Cosmo, Haunted Myst and Calvin3.

I second what Piggy and Aluma said. It's because of all you guys posting such sweet paint jobs that I bought an airbrush. Before anyone says anything, I have about two more weeks of hard work to finish around the house before I can take some down time to play with the airbrush.

Now, about the entries...

Piggy: great work, bro! I love the multi-style, multi-person tribute. I don't think I could do anything more than a simple one-colour or basic mask on a body that small.

Adrc: You really nailed the Spaz name and colours. That looks just like the label from the can, only with a nice shine to it. No chrome rips? *sniffle* I've come to look forward to seeing those when I see a post or thread with your name on it and a picture attached. Just ribbing ya, bud. Your work always looks great. You could do the rips in fluorescents and still wow me.

Fester and standard: Better than I could do! I love the old pickup body. I'd try to find one, but if I can trash a .060 thick stadium truck style shell in two bash sessions, that '32 Ford body wouldn't last more than a tankful on my truck.

I'm still waiting for some Bob Dively's LM to arrive from Tower.. I ordered it a few weeks ago, and was hoping that it'd arrive in time - I guess not since this is the last weekend of the month. :(

Here's a listing of the entries again:

Leadfoot: Hellion 190mm Prototype
Adrcracing: HPI El Camino
lstretch: MG Rover Inspired
John2005: Proline T4 Interceptor
Seb: Mugen MBX5 ProSpec
Piggy89373: Proline's Alfa Romeo 2.0
Adrcracing: Pro-Line Chevy Silverado
Fester2004 (oneimuterfer): 32' ford pickup

Phil Manro, being the winner from last month, will judge this month. Judging will be completed and posted by Sunday, 5 June 2005.

Best of luck to all entries.

Looks like another tough month for 'da judge...all very nice entries!

I will work on the calculating results and get them to 'bacon boy' in the next 24 hours. Or should I just go ahead and post them when they are tabulated?

If I had to guess who Seb was complimenting with the real flames I would have to say Adrcracing. I believe Adrcracing was one of the first, if not THE first, to show us all the real flame design. Then all of a sudden everyone of ebay was doing the real flames. I guess all those guys are doing tributes also.

Adrcracing your the man!!!!!
Seb nice job, I'm sure Adrcracing is honored:)

This was harder than I thought it was going to be! :o

Beyond the scores, I added my reasoning for the scores. These were ALL very nicely done and it's hard to be critical of them, but I guess that's what a judge is supposed to do. I tried to stick to the guidelines of the competition, so I hope no one gets offened by my comments.

Results (not in order of finish):

Leadfoot: Hellion 190mm Prototype
Design: 9
Execution: 10
Difficulty: 9

Total: 28

Comments: Very well executed and difficult design. Great display of Leadfoots's fading capabilities. The only real nit I have is the flow to the checkers. The checkers seem a bit segregated from the rest of the design.

Adrcracing: HPI El Camino
Design: 8
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 8

Total: 24

Comments: Nice looking design that flows well (and I AM a BIG NASCAR fan...but NOT of Harvick. LOL). Nits: a less difficult overall design and the outline around the numbers seem a bit inconsistent.

lstretch: MG Rover Inspired
Design: 9
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 7

Total: 24

Comments: This one was tough to judge. I really liked the design, layout, and color schemes. However, the pics were not the best, and you did not specify if the logos were hand cut, vinyl masks, or decals. Therefore I could not give you the difficulty credit for the logos which would have given you another point or two.

John2005: Proline T4 Interceptor
Design: 8
Execution: 8
Difficulty:7

Total: 23

Comments: Clean! Very nice looking body. I thought the design could have been improved by a more "inconsistent" flow of jaggies over and around the truck. Good use of fade, but overall not as difficult a design as some others in the competition.

Seb: Mugen MBX5 ProSpec
Design: 8
Execution: 9
Difficulty: 10

Total: 27

Comments: As always, awesome job. One of the most difficult designs of the bunch with great execution per usual. Nits: The overall color scheme doesn't pop to me. I can almost visualize a little more yellow in the real flames would make the demon really stand out and the whole buggy design come to life.

Piggy89373: Proline's Alfa Romeo 2.0
Design: 8
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 9

Total: 25

Comments: Excellent color choices and use of several techgniques. The pig has been practicing! Nits: I thought the design could have flowed a bit more to include the back and deck lid of the car which would improve the overall design (maybe could have done more with the blue stripe?)
_________________________________________________

Adrcracing: Pro-Line Chevy Silverado
Design: 9
Execution: 10
Difficulty: 10

Total: 29

Comments: Wow! This one blew me away. Phenomenal execution in the logos. Very realistic looking splatter and logo replication. Attention to details all over this body make me jealous! Very nice use of color. Nit: Too many rips? Then again, is their such a thing as too many? :)

Fester2004 (oneimuterfer): 32' ford pickup
Design: 7
Execution: 7
Difficulty: 7

Total: 21

Comments: Another nice looking design. Love the classic rod feel and the cool marble effect color combo. The green and black look awesome. Nits: Rigid flow, abrupt tranisitions, and simplicity (lack of shadowing).
_________________________________________________

Standard 63: RC18T Shell
Design: 8
Execution: 7
Difficulty:7

Total: 22

Comments: Very good looking body. But I couldn't give high marks on execution and difficulty due to lack of pics and information on how the design was created. Wish you had posted more pics, it looks good from afar.

Thanks Phil, That body was at RCX and Spaz Stix told me RCCA took some PICS of it, so maybe it will be in the mag! Nope, no such thing as to many rips. So Phil, who is your driver? :)
