So my question is, is the DT-02 at least good enough to get around a track fairly quickly, or is it just gonna bounce around and look silly? Can it be somewhat competitive? I'm not really looking to race...yet, but I'd like to be able to take it to a track and practice without getting frustrated at how poorly it handles. If I do end up wanting to race I'll get an AE or a hopped-up Durga later on, but I'd like to at least be able to have a little performance induced fun with the SV if possible.
Thanks
Yes, a Viper can get around the the track fairly quickly and not bounce around alot (at least mine doesn't). The problems I have run into are mainly two things. Cornerning can be tricky, I always get out turned by my 4wd drive friends. However I can usually catch them on the straights. Also the Viper has a tendacy to understeer which can be mitigated somewhat by switching the front tires to some spikey/knobby ones. The mods I have done to my Viper are 3racing shock/dampers, Universal shafts(dogbones), 3racing Aluminium Rear Hub, 3racing Aluminium Front C Mount and 3racing Aluminium Knuckle Arms. The hubs, c mount and knuckles I replaced because of damage to the orignals. Our track is pretty rough and tends to eat parts if your're not carefull ;) Also i have a Tamiya Super BZ (23 turn) motor installed with the default pinion gear, the Tamiya ESC handles it fine. As for being competitive I would say it's not the best choice, but I think it depends on what your competition is. If you have a bunch of 4wd people with brushless motors then you're going to get beat. I'm getting better at starting to get a drift going through corners and did manage to beat some of my friends a couple of times.

Hey thanks for the response and the good tips. I'm glad to hear the stock ESC can handle a lower turn motor, and how do you like the 3racing shocks? I can't wait to get my viper, it sounds like a fun car.

The 3racing shocks are pretty good. My only complaint with them is the back shocks leak oil. I'm sure I haven't over filled them so it's either bad seals or I'm bottoming out on them alot. So I usually end up topping them off after every 3rd track day. Could also be that's just the way things are, however most of my friends don't have this problem. Might try to put some o-rings on the piston shaft and see if that helps.

I have a few more questions...how long has the DT-02 chassis been around? Does anyone know if Tamiya is going to decide to discontinue making it? The reason I ask is because I'd hate to get myself a Sand Viper then come to find out a year from now that they're no longer making it and then be forced to retire it early due to a lack of parts being available.
And, Kahoko, what pinion are you running with your BZ motor? 17t or 19t?
Thanks

The DT-02 has been around for a while now I believe. The Viper is the newest buggy to use the chassis so I don't think you'll have much to worry about. And even if Tamiya does stop making it for whatever reason the parts should have a pretty good shelf life. If you are concerned you could do what I have been doing and buy replacement parts for things and just shelf them yourself. I've got a new body, new swing arms, and gearbox up on a shelf in my garage and I'm hunting for a replacement chassis right now. These seem to be the hardest parts to find at the moment, mainly because nobody (as far as I know) makes hop-ups for these parts. Everything else is pretty standard and/or there are lots of DT-02 hop-ups floating around for them.
As for the pinion I'm running the stock 17t pinion with the Super Stock BZ. I have a 19t pinion but it's way too much speed for our track, I don't even get the most out of the 17t pinion.

^^^^^^ Thanks, Kahoko. Stocking a few extra parts sounds like a good idea, and who knows, maybe us DT-02 fans will get lucky and Tamiya will release a newer buggy on the same chassis, and with a slippper too :) ...just as long as it doesn't look anything like the Neo Falcon, that things is ugg.

The yellow dots indicate the type of rubber/compound on the tire. In this case a yellow dot is their M2 Super Soft compound. Which is considered a good all around compound. *note not all companies use the same color to indicate the same compound.

I have got Dirt Hawgs, they are great on road, but off road they are a bit ordinary. I should say that I have tried them on loose and packed dirt, and grass.

Could you tell me what wheels i need as it would not fit on standard viper wheel. Well they did but they were so wide that i could not fit the wheels to the car without the tire rubbing it. Link to Proline Site would be great as i will have to find this in the UK.
Took it out before i had finished the Body shell and didnt realise how quick the Sport Tuned motor was. Hit a metal pole and cracked the servo mount/arm. Opps. Was fun drifting though
Luckily i had a spare in the box. Nice and strong now.
So i have put it togther. Was good fun. Not to difficult for my first one. I went for Tamiya Camel yellow in the end. not there standard yellow. I like the Camel Trophy so it only fits. Look up Camel Trophy on google or you tube if unsure.

Just charging battery now and ready for a burn tomorrow. My take Video.
Another question. I got a 2000 battery as standard with kit. Would a 4500 rocket battery be faster or just a longer amout of time you can drive. Confused as to what the higher number means. Link to battery i was thinking of.

The higher mAh in general just means longer run times. Now you do have to be a bit careful in that you don't want to over work the motor. So even if you get a 7000mAh battery you are going to want to check the motor every now and then and make sure it's not too hot. If you are running stock then probably nothing to worry about. But if you switch to a lower turn motor or go brushless then you definitley need to check on that. But in general the xxxx mAh is not going to give you more speed. I run a 1800mAh battery with a Super Stock BZ motor (23t) and I get about 8-12 mins.
As for tires. Depends on your track conditions. If it's muddy/damp soil then the stock tires on the rear work quite well. However if you have more of a packed dirt/dusty kind of track then you might want to look at some micro-pin tires. This is what I currently run on my viper.
Rear: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGA4
Front: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGA3
I would guess these proline ones would work as well.
http://www.prolineracing.com/c-29-tires.aspx
The hole-shot or bowtie tires should work fine.
Also did you remove the bulkhead cover from the servo for show? Or did you forget to put it on? :)
I should try to get some picts of my viper up. It's well loved :)

Hi Mate
Nah i didnt forget (I think i know what you mean).
Do you mean the cover that goes over the top of the servo. If so then it wont fit mate. It hits the top of the servo arm so i can not steer. Did not know how to resolve that issue. Is it very important. and do you think that it is why i snapped the servo arm yesterday. Luckily i had a spare.
With the tires. I really appreciate your help with that but my question was which wheels fit the proline dirt hawgs because they do not fit on the disk wheels, and i have already bought the tires
Looking at gurtards pictures he has fitted them but i dont know what wheels he has for the rear.
Sorry im new to all this stuff.
yeah post some pics. Im going to get girlfriend to take a vid tonight while i have a late bash after work. you can tell me if it looks and sounds like its running ok. Scared of breaking it though. Post in around 2-3hrs

I have the ProLine Dirt Hawgs mounted on the stock DT-02 wheels. I remember I had to trim the foam a bit to get them on, and then glue them. But they do fit.
The changes I have from stock:

6. Replaced rear dogbones with universal shafts. (found them on ebay)
7. Rear shocks replaced with Yeah Racing 90mm (bent shafts on the stock ones) (found on ebay)

Hi All
New video here from an abandoned airfield. Davidstow WWII RAF base
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwYT_LfbPlI&fmt=18
Strange place but really cool for RC cars. Humps and bumps everywhere and strange old buildings.
Excuse the sound issues though. Not sure what happened there.
Also now have black HPI spoiler and front Aluminium C mounts.
Photos below. Just waiting for my 3racing order to arrive for the rest of the hop ups and also a black wheel and tire set. Hopefully will look sweet. Proline wheels were dissapointing so i ain't using those any more. They suck and you have to buy new bearings and that. Don't like the dirt Hawgs either. Settling with Ribbed fronts and beaded rears that come pre glued on the wheels.

Wow, that is quite the crash! Did you have the piece the covers the Servo installed? it looks like it broke from exactly where it was supposed to be!
I just got my Tamiya Neo Falcon - it's an XB kit - the Source had it on a super sale, so i got it.
I already ordered:
- 14 ball bearings
- Tie Rods to remplace the top arm brackets
- Ball Diff
- Universal Drive Shaft
I have replacement shocks from my DB01 kit that has since been upgraded, i think they're the same Black oil filled shocks that come in Tamiya's regular kit. They will replace the crappy blue shocks from the XB, and i put my own FM Radio, and a better motor. The XB kit is basically the original DT-02 release - the Super Falcon G
Other than the Tamiya bodies, which ones can i get to replace it? I have only been a few pages into this thread, i've seen some spoilers changed. Don't know if anyone noticed the Neo Falcon body is sleek but almost no rear downforce...

Yes there is one body that fits. I have just ordered it and im waiting for it to arrive.
My spoiler is just a HPI spoiler in black
Link to body is: http://www.jconcepts.net/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_6&products_id=10
Mine will be pure white with all black parts and blue metal parts. Sweet. You may be able to help me with the servo cover you was asking about. It never fit. The servo horn gets in the way and so its no possible to screw it on. Look closely at my previous pics. Can you spot why cas its really annoying.

Hi all, discovered this thread and thought it more appropriate to post here.
I have a DT-02 running a few hopups including a Tamiya Super Stock TZ motor. I bought a heatsink ages ago for it, installed the aluminum disk no issues but the heatsink never fitted.
I have now discovered that the stock silvercan motor is longer and the heat sink will fit that easy.
Has anyone modified a DT-02 to accept a superstock motor and be able to fit he heatsink successfully?
Thanks :)
