Just for fun:
Do you think of RC boating as a hobby or as a sport? Feel free to say why.

I believe that, in the big picture, R/C boating is a hobby. Specific areas of the hobby, like scale steering competitions or high speed racing, should be considered motorsports.

My vote was for hobby.
Reason - Is due to spending more time at the bench/shop tinkering than actual running. Its so much fun trying to come up with ideas to get things together or how to improve a setup. Of course seeing it all come together & throwing some spray is the icing on the cake.
Good post Matt.:)

Chip Hanauer, Dave Villwock, Mark Evans, they are all athletes because DRIVE THEIR BOATS!! I hate to say it but R/C's dont qualify. There is nothing physical about it. Are video gamers athletes, how about chess players or stamp collectors? Lets be real about this. We are all just kids at heart having fun with expensive toys.

I didn't vote on either, there should be a third one for both. The Hobby part is in the building of the boat, the Sport part is in the racing/running.
We have a LHS that changed their name recently form R&L Hobbies to hobby-sports.com to reflect their feelings on the matter. I suppose that the .com aprt of their name shows that they have a web site and do internet business.
A lot of sports are questionable to me as if they really are. Does skydiving qualify just because you're crazy enough to jump out of a perfectly good plane and yank a D-ring?
Is Drag Racing a sport because they are now running sub-5 second runs and are being hit with positive and negative G-forces? Gee, I can do that at Cedar Point and I'm no Jock! Is Bowling a sport or an excuse to go have some beers with the boys?
If calling it a sport means that you have to use strategy, planning, preparation, hand and eye co-ordination, the proper equipment then we're in. Have you ever seen someone frantcially trying to pull-start a balky gas engine when they're on the clock? That's a workout.

As far as I'm concerened anything that isn't performed head-to-head with another competitor is NOT a sport. As well, if it can be done with a beer in hand it is DEFINITELY not a sport. :p

I think if they consider nascar a sport, anything can be considered a sport

Looking at it from a business standpoint the govenment says if you don't make a profit after three years it's a hobby. Never will be a sport for me I wouldn't want to ruin the fun by making it a sport. :D And I agree with scorpion Nascar a sport I always thought that was a red-neck with a sponsor.

you're kidding right? 22 votes and over 200 hits. Its not a bad thing for folks to vote much less give your two cents input. :)

It must be all those people who think it is a sport but are afraid to say so!!!!!

Maybe they feel that it's already been said.
Scorp, I consider NASCAR racing a sport. Go out into your parents car and sit in it for 4 hours with the windows rolled up. It takes strength, endurance and the ability to take a beating plus trying to concentrate for a long time. The racers lose 4-6 pounds of water loss during the races. Strategy is also a factor just like other sports. The racers are working out when not racing to keep their bodies in shape and so does the pit crew. Many of the race shops have gyms in them plus physical trainers on the staff. They also don't have someone to replace them every few minutes like football, hockey and basketball players do.
