I remember my first exposure to R/C airplanes...I was either 8 or 9 and my family stopped at the old Huntsville, Alabama airport on a Sunday afternoon.
I also remember there was a R/C exhibit at "The Mall" of Huntsville.

I remember seeing the planes fly around and really enjoying it. There was one modeler that was working on a B17, he had it all build and painted except for mounting the engines which he had canvas covers over the narcells. It was a really neat afternoon.

Got me interested in model planes. I did ask for a control line Stuka by Cox for my next birthday. It was a little too much for me, plus it wasn't a trainer so on the 3rd flight, it crashed and the wings broke off. Should have had someone with experience to train me.

Since then I got back into R/C several years ago. Bought another Cox model. A two channel R/C plane with a .049 engine. Again, didn't have anyone to teach me. A couple of years later, worked a couple of side jobs, saved and bought a trainer kit from Balsa USA (Stik 40 Plus) and an Airtronics 6 channel radio. This time I asked a friend to teach me how to fly and this time I was successful. Enjoyed the trainer because after a few crashes, I was able to rebuild it and get it in the air again.

Kids got older and time got shorter, so I had to "retire" from flying for a while. Sold my radio, but still have the trainer and a half built Dynaflite .40 Spitfire. Hope to soon be able to re-invest in another radio and finish the Spitfire. Miss being able to fly. I also purchased two combat sailplane kits. Finished one plane, haven't been able to get it up...looking for a buddy to teach me how to fly sailplanes.

Oh, if anyone remembers seeing the guys out at the old Huntsville Airport, let me know what you remember.

Thanks,
Barry
