Character Paint Competition

All entries must be posted by Friday, 24 Jun 05. Judging will be completed by Tuesday, 28 Jun 05. Entries into this competition will automatically be entered in the June Best Paint Competition.

This competition is the Character Paint competition. As the name implies, this involves the use of painted characters.

Entries will be judged upon the following criterion:

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. To often there are muddy, poorly lit pictures that limit the cars chances of winning. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention for the People Choice.

General Rules:

1) Any Car may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any Car submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is discouraged and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting bodies in anyway will not be tolerated.
6) Must fall within the restrictions listed below.
7) Only 1 entree per person.
8) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
9) Imagination is key

Special Restrictions:

1. The main graphic must include a character. This character can be a head, a full body, etc.

2. The character can be a caricature, superhero, My Little Pony, Woody Wood Pecker, or even a portrait, just as long as it's a character.

3. All entries would automatically be included in the end of month competition.

4. I'll select an impartial judge for the competition.

5. Four pictures allowed per entry. Of these, at least one must be a pre-painted pic (no paint on it yet). The pre-painted pic can be of the body prepped for paint, but can have no paint on the shell and must be of the body to be painted. Failure to provide this pic will result in disqualification. Note: Providing a pre-painted pic of a Mazda 6 body and a painted body of a Stratus body will result in disqualification.

Each submission must include the following:
Body manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
A car underneath the body is preferred.

A judge will be announced within the next few days for this competition. If a judge is not found by mid month, I’ll do the judging.

The contestants are: RespirologyRC, Seb, AirBoston, 3tc Graphx, CharlieB, Mproy and Blacktiger.

Others wishing to enter are highly encouraged to participate. However, one point will be duducted from their overall score for entering late.

Let's get to painting!!!

Others wishing to enter are highly encouraged to participate. However, one point will be duducted from their overall score for entering late.

That statement is kind of an oxymoron. Some of us, due to other commitments can't say weeks in advance if we can participate. I like to throw one in occasionally if I have the time. Be assured that if I'm going to be put in the penalty box for that, I won't bother.

Bryan, how is this different from a timed event where going over an allotted time would penalize you? Other than amassing more penalty points, there isn't a difference. If it bothers you, don't enter. If you can live with a one point deduction, then go for it. One of the things you'll have to realize is that doing characters is a lot different than doing flames or scallops. There's going to be differing levels of detail entered. The more detail you put in, the higher the score...obviously. This encourages those that wish to enter late to add a bit more detail to overcome the one point deficit.

I don't mean to sound rude, I greatly respect you and your skills. I just wanted you to see the reasoning behind it.

No need for point deductions. I've given this some more thought and Bryan, I with you. The point of this little thing is to give members a chance to stack their works up against their peers. So, no point deductions for late entries.

There will be no point deductions for those that haven't stood up and said "yup, I'll do it." With that said, I'm hoping we'll have more entries.

Ya know, a great graphic to do is a pig. :D :D :D

I'm glad to see that you've reconsidered. :) As with when you originally asked for participants, I'm still on the fence. There's always that slim chance that I'll get off my ass and practice.. I now have 10 unpainted bodies to find a use for, with an 11th on its way in a kit. :P and to think, I haven't even started up the compressor this weekend.. eesh!

Fantastic detail on that one, Seb! You take great advantage of background/placement for your photography. =)

Thanks guys\girls,

I like the way this body looks from the back too, got to get some pictures of that. For some reason I did some detailing work, which I hate doing, but all the lines and different colors add up to a nice look.

I did think I was going to loose it cutting that Hulk out of tape... LOL... I like it now that it's finished.

Whoa! That musta been a LOT of work! By the way, Seb, a lot of your work is being shown over on Savage Central. There are a few shells you've done that I hadn't seen before, including a (small?) truck body done in black with red whispy "real flames" on it - serious droolage, bro. One guy made a comment that your friend was (paraphrasing here) pimping your work way too much. I found it pretty funny and let the guy know that it's not breaking the no-advertising rule. You have some new fans over there now, too =)

Thanks for the update as to what's happening on that forum. I can't sign up because I'm not allowed to have a Hotmail or Yahoo e-mail so I can't go on there and my regular mail is crap so I don't use it... so I'm stuck... but nice to hear that I got fans. :)

Weird. I didn't know you can't use "anonymous" email accounts to sign up. It's been a while since I opened my account there, so it's hard to remember. I'll just PM you about this.

A judge has been identified for this competition. Adrcracing has (thankfully) accepted judging this special competition as well as the end of month. Considering his talents, we couldn't ask for a better judge.

Well here is a sneak peek at what I am working on. I only have one problem, time. My wifes Uncle passed away and we have to drive to Missouri on Monday the 20th. And I won't be back untill Thursday the 23rd. Would it be possible to extend the deadline till the end of the month?

Blacktiger, that's something you'd have to take up with the Judge...Adrcracing. It's his call, for this month he's G.O.D. (game organizational director).

I second blacktiger's request. I special ordered some materials from the hobby store and they dont come in untill the 23-24th, which gives me only a few hours to START and Finish my Nissan Titan truck body. Adrcracing, could you consider exending the deadline untill June 30th?

AirBoston

I'll third the request as a hope to get something done. As it is, I'm hiring my wife to do much of not all of the work... and she's never done this before.

In that case, you'd better give her fringe benefits like back rubs and candle-lit dinners! ;)

That's fine with me. 30th it is.

Seb: Nice job on the Hulk! For me, it was the lightning and lack of rivets on the fender flares that brought your score down a bit.

dyslexic: Thanks for entering and making this a legitimate competition. Nice looking body, I think a little shadowing around the skull and a thinner black outline could have really helped your score.
