I've been trying to decide what to do with my old Steve Muck Spartan Streaker mono hull. I put it together years ago as something I could run at the lake for fun. I chose an OPS .45 at the time because it was strictly a fun boat for use at the lake while out family boating. I had other boats for racing.

Anyway, I've decided to try racing again. There's an active club that's a bit less than 2 hours from home. I think I can "escape" from home often enough to participate in some of their club races, and perhaps the IMPBA district race there.

So, now I've got a dilema. It seems that all of the monos in this club are gas. I don't want to spend the money on an entirely new boat, engine, and hardware, I'd like to use the Spartan. The club will let me run in the open mono and offshore with it, but with the current engine, it's pointless. I'd be way too slow.

So, I'm considering a replacement engine. The hull is 40" long and about 12" wide at the stern. It's supposed to be able to handle up to a .90 nitro engine. I originally thought about converting to gas. It seemed that the hull was big enough to use something like a G23 or G26. However, the feedback so far is that's not a good idea. The other choice is a bigger nitro engine. I've got a limited budget for doing this, too many bills and quite a bit of money in planes already. I don't want to spend $500 on one of the typical racing engines. I've found a place where I can get a new OS .81 VR-M for a bit under $240. The specs seem pretty good and it's much more affordable than some of the "racing" brands. This engine would give me a much better chance against the gassers, and I wouldn't need to make major changes to the hardware to use it.

I'm looking for someone who has run this engine, or has seen them run, to know if it's a good engine, and if my plan seems worth doing. Thanks in advance for the input.

I don't think anyone on here has run that engine, a long time ago I was gonnna get it but decided to just go gas

Iknow os is a very good company.
I think you should just go gas, but If you cant, then that engine is the way to go....
a new zen costs around 250 way more reliable, easier I think.

I am somewhat confused  here. You say the club will let you race a nitro in a gas heat??

I have never seen that before..............

To be on the competitive side @ a race, get a Seducer!!!! ( that is if you want to run a mono class ) Then put that engine in it! Use the Streaker as a fun boat if you like. I only say that because when I am at the races in my district, the Seducers are the ones to beat. Engine and driving skills come into play as well.

That boat with that engine would get lapped like a Old Lady @ the heats that I attend. Don't know what the comp is in your club district, but if its like mine, they run Seducers with either a Mac or CMB engine.

The engine is a fine engine. A fellow in my club has a few in Cats & they seem to run very well.

I'd like to do gas, but I've got some feedback that says the hull can't handle it. However, this week I got more feedback that said I should go with a G23. If I can do gas I'll definitely go for it.

LarDog, it's from a special friend who sells OS engines. I don't know how many he has. You interested in getting one? If so, I can check. Send me a PM or email.

Yup, they will let me run nitro, but only in the open classes. I don't know if this applies to just club races, or if I could also do it in the district race.

Unfortunately, I can't swing a new boat and engine right now, just spent a bunch of money on cherry for some cabinets I promised the wife I would build. Also, the club just doesn't appear to run nitro monos or cats, everything I saw was gas. I'm starting to think I should just give up on the spartan, perhaps sell it, and move the OPS engine to a sport 40 hydro, or perhaps something like an aeromarine Sprintcat or Mean Machine.
