View Full Version : savge 3 speed gearing ratio ?

I just checked for curiosity the new gearing of 3 speed gearbox in respect to the 2 speed original and I found out the following:
2 SPEED:
1st 18/44
top 23/39
final drive 32/29
3 SPEED:
1st 18/44
2nd 21/41
top 24/38
final drive 31/30
So this is my conclusion:
Final drive is shortened by two teeth
1st is equal
top is two teeth longer
This results in total passing through:
1st shortened by two teeth
top equal
So HPI says 1st is shortened and that's OK , but HPI says top is 10% longer but that's not TRUE .
What am I missing out ?
Thank you all
What am I missing out ?
Did you carry the one?
sorry I had to do that...
I did the same calculations the other day on a spreadsheet and came up with slightly different numbers than you did: first is lower as is second and third is lower than second on the two-speed. I rechecked my numbers twice and kept coming up with those numbers.
Both my friend and brother blew their three-speed transmissions this past weekend. I'm still running my two-speed and have not had the tranny open at all (the Savage SS 4.6 has both diffs and the tranny pre-assembled in the box).

PCC - I'm building a 4.6 and have read some advice I should open the tranny and make sure somethimng about 2nd gear is right. MonsterBrad had something (a pin?) back out in his and cause a lot of damage. I'm at the point it wouldn't be a big deal to check it out, but don't want too if it doesn't need doing! Thanks

Where did you get your gear numbers?
Duster, when I built my Savage I pretty much built it by-the-book. I wanted to see if anything would break and what. So far the tranny has held up but I managed to break one shock body, one front dogbone, rear diff drive gear, which I moved to the front which took out the front drive dogbone. That's it, so far.
The numbers that enpi099 posted are correct. I checked them against my brother's 3-speed and my manual for the two-speed.

I wasn't implying that they weren't correct. I wanted to plug the numbers into my own spreadsheet, but i'm not sure which is which. I think i did it from his numbers, but i'd like to see the diagrams and tooth counts to be sure.
It goes something like this:
Let's say the clutchbell and spur gear are 17/47 as comes with the SS4.6.
The gear ratio equations are:
(17/47)*(18/44)*(31/30)*(13/42) for first
(17/47)*(21/41)*(31/30)*(13/42) for second
(17/47)*(24/38)*(31/30)*(13/42) for third
Or something like that.
