Ok this might be fun. What was your first RC Car? This will date some of the older guys on here. Oh yeah, and RCCA people, tell us too. Which one of you had a Sand Scorcher first? http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

As for me? My first car was the Ultima. Just the basic Kyosho Ultima.

My bro's was the Super Champ.

It would be tyco car http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif It was a kraco indy car
thats when I feel in love with RC

yup I went on buying look for more speed. till one day I found a magazine that was based on R/C cars.

yup R/C car action
I saved my allowence for 4 months

I baught a team associated R/C 10 team car with graphite chassie http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

I never experienced speed like that was in heaven.

I was clueless on how fast they could really be till I ready a issue about insane speed run.

I was like WoW. my sister said dont believe everything you read then I said yeah she probley right.

then one day I am with my friend in river park next to the 59st Bridge in NY. I witnessed the speed these cars can go when a guy had a 1/10 scale dragster with caster oil paint scheme. This was up and gone over 300 feet in a blink of an eye. I mean it literally, there was tire marks leaft about 3 feet distance. I couldn't believe my eyes

i am into R/C big time I am speed demon.
I use MT to drag just to drag against other RC cars and put em to shame hehehe. Yeah I lose some but that part that comes with racing and I must accept it and congradulate the guy on his win http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

recently another reality has broken a surf to me RC gas cars are fast
so I will begin a venture soon.

I race at suto shows though. my super fast RS4 MT thanks to HPI help and R/C car actions advice http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif thanks. You guy scored me part in a auto club called ENKAY and I be demonstrating these extreme R/Cs at certain auto show hosted by speedworld in NY. the next one wont be till next year http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif this years was awsome. I got some pics of the real machines unfortainately I none of R/C pic I promise I get em next year. There was guy with honda painted like his real car http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif.

I have a RS4 MT I painted just for the auto show It look simple yet look awsome
matelic red and silver F 150 body

I dont know if R/C car action want in on this prodject but I plan on making a RC jet powered dragster http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif I am checking what is available at the moment in the R/C world

Actually RCCA did a rocket dragster car a LOOOONG time ago. They used a model rocket engine, some copper tubing to make a U shaped housing, the whole thing was sitting on an old Kyosho 1/12 scale on road car. Don't remember what issue that was in, maybe someone at RCCA knows, and you can get that back issue (if available).

Tamyia hornet for me, and i used the hump back battery, and the original futaba magnum junior, ended getting a new magnum sport for my stampede(second car) after working on it one day and frying the old reciever. hte stick rotary speed controller held up all those years I had it

well, i ot started when i first saw my bros futaba fx10 buggy (which i still have) that he bought in like 89 or 90. then, my friend bought an r/c car action. then i was set. i took my $250 in x-mas and birthday money, and went to riders hobby shop in lansing mighigan to buy my rustler.

i have since added $1000 worth of hop ups. soon to spend about $400 this x-mas to buy a new radio and esc and motor and batts and soem accessories so i can take my fusion and my tq radio and other motor and put it in my bros futaba fx10 buggy so i can have 2 cars and so i can (dare i say it) let my friends drive with me. ooohhh that one hurt. lol

My first car was a Tamiya Grasshopper. 1200 mAh 6-cell hump pack and an Airtronics 2-stick radio. The receiver was about half the size of the battery pack!

In 1985/86, I saw the Grasshopper in the Sears Christmas catalog. This is back when they used to sell the Grasshopper, Hot Shot (ancient 4wd), and the Fox (ancient 2wd) through the catalog in addition to the Tyco cars of the day.

I actually saved my money for awhile, and then took out a loan from my parents for the rest of the $150 combo price ... I paid on installments of $7 per month for the next 14 months or so!

Incedentally, my first copy of RCCA was the Fall '86 edition. It was the one with the 1/4 scale Conley V8 powered roadster, and I think it was also the only RCCA to feature a tear-out centerfold of a chick with a bikini posed with the car.

my first real rc was a varicom grizzly (it sucked). i wanted the clod, but it was over my budget. second was a traxxas bullet. i drove the tires off that thing, literally. probably the best car i had. i eventually converted it to a truck, until the ls-2 came out and retired the bullet. from there, i added a usa-1& bolink sport. i finally got into what i really wanted, nitro. first a hpi super with a viper, then a nxt. and when the t-maxx came out, had to get it. so i guess when the tallies are added, traxxas is my favorite company, and i am not counting the fiero gt i traded from my brother. traxxas simply builds what the hobbyist wants, not the racers.

Well my first r/c was an old Tyco Turbo Hopper. But my first real r/c was a Kyosho Optima 4wd. I got it about a year after I got the Tyco. Bought it used from a friend of mine. After that my grandmother asked me what I wanted for christmas. I was like 14 at the time. So I started looking in RCCA and found a Kyosho Hi-Rider vette. Was the first kit I put together all buy myself. Soon after that I was working and could afford a real car. I got an RC10 Champ with the 3 piece wheels and the classic gold tub. It's even pre-stealth tranny. My next purchase was a Bolink Sport. Then I discovered NITRO! Whent out and got a Traxxas Nitro Hawk. My latest purchase was a Associated B3 Team Kit. Think thats about it!

My first R/C car was a Tamiya Grasshopper ('87). Futaba 2-stick radio, 6-cell hump battery, resistor speed control, plastic tub chassis, etc. My, how times have changed.

One thing I do remember about this car was that the steering arms would break easily in a crash. The only hop-up I added was a set of ball bearings. I also had to replace the gearbox case when a friend of mine rear-ended his original RC10 and broke the gearbox case.

My first car was the original RC10T with bearing. I got it as soon as it was released. I couldn't afford everything at once so I spent a month building and setting up my truck (intending on racing it at my local hobby shop.) I finally scrapped up enough money for a Futaba Magnum 2PBKA radio and a Tekin 401K speed controller. I used a credit card for the rest (I just couldn't wait any longer.) I got the enging 2 batteries and couldn't resist a few hop ups, I got the losi hydra dive conversion for the 10T and new rims and tires. Next thing you know I was racing... (If you could call it that...) I have had a lot of fun with it over the last 10 years and still have it with the original equipment i bought back then and it still runs great. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

OU812: Hey, I remember when Sears used to sell Tamiya cars. That was when they had a toy section.

My first car was a Tamiya Frog. I remember my parents got it for my birthday. It was from the Sharper Image catalog. They were selling the whole package: the Frog, an Acoms stick radio, Tamiya plastic 6 cell hump pack and an overnight battery charger. It cost about $150 back then which was an excellent price. I remember being so dissapointed since I could only drive the car once a day then have to plug it in to recharge. (I didn't realize there were fast chargers yet.)

Have any of you heard of an Aristo-Craft Wildibeast. It is just like the Dolphin (made by Aristo-Craft also). If any of you have ever heard of one of these or even have one, let me know. I would love to get mine working again. It was alot of fun and would go thru anything. There are many that are better out there, but the Wildibeast was an awsome beginner R/C. To bad I can't find parts anymore. They were hard to find when I first got the thing and soon after I couldn't find any at all. Anyway the Wildibeast was my first.

A Heathkit Spectra 1/8th gas car 1971. No rear suspension, no diff, barely any brakes & weighed about 10lbs. Had a Futaba 2 channel radio with a "brick" reciever & 2 servos. Never did get that thing to work right.

That would be a Hornet. Then a Frog that was actually supposed to me my dad's but he never touched it.

I assembled the hornet that night, then took the frog on a ski vacation and assembled it in the lodge. Neither car was particularly good and I traded them in on an optima which I still have today. It would still be running, but my nephue got ahold of it and cut the antena down to about one inch. That wouldn't be too bad except he also lost the crank case cover and the spur.. err reduction? gear. My search for remplacements has been in vain.

My first real R/C car was a 1992 Associated RC10T, and I just got home from the track. In tonight's race I finished first out of twelve, with an eight year old truck!! Pretty cool, eh? That goes to show that only a small part of racing is technology and new equipent, the rest is all driving skill (and throw in a little luck as well). BTW, I led the whole main, so this wasn't just luck.

My truck has served me well, and the time now comes to replace it with a new TA truck. I'm getting it early 2001, and I'm SO damned excited. Just think how much better I might do with a newer/lighter/faster/technologically advanced truck! I can't wait!

My first R/C was a MRC Ironman, got it about 3 years ago....yes 3 years ago. It took 4 months to get it done...cuz me being 13 at the time i had no cash flow. About 6 months ago was the last time it has seen the track. It had a Pro-line body and tires, RPM rims, Novak ESC, 2000 batts....and so one. Well its down to the chassi, body, wheels and tires. I sold all the electrics that were on it for the money. And about 2 months ago i finaly got my first "NEW" R/C truck....Losi XXX-T! This thing rocks! I got all the money up from working and so on and bought it. It has all the goodies.

My first 1/10th scale was a Monogram "Lightning". I told my dad that's what I wanted for my birthday. They were 150 for everything. It came semi-assembled. I wore it out in a couple years. It wasn't until I was 15 that I got back into RC cars, and saved for an RC-10.. before graphite chassis's, it had ye old Gold for unders. But, the days of the "Lightning" are etched as my true RC begginings.

It was a Jerobee, .049 gas. I think it was one of the first R/C cars.

From there, I moved to:

Tamiya electric, but I forget the model
(metal chassis w/plastic body)

Too many RC-12e/i's to list.

RC-10 graphite

RC-10t

RC-10/RPM

RC-10l

RC-10ls

Tamiya m-03

Street Weapon

XXCR-Kinwald

and I just ordered an x-ray and TC-3 Factory.

I saw another post from someone old enough to remember the slot-car pistol on the back of the radio. It sure is funny remembering all of the things we used to do to go fast.

To bad I can't find parts anymore. They were hard to find when I first got the thing and soon after I couldn't find any at all. Anyway the Wildibeast was my first.

Hey Chris5coat, I had an Aristo-Craft/Hi-Tec Kangaroo, remember that? I faintly remember the Dolphin, was that four wheel drive? The Kangaroo was a fun car for a beginner, but after it broke a couple of times, I couldn't get parts. It was kind of like a Tyco where you'd send it back for repairs. My next car was a Super Rockbuster, pretty much just a Tamiya Hornet/Grasshopper knockoff. Then a Bolink sport for the carpet.

Now, it's a XXTCR-Graphite Plus, Bullhead, HPI RS4MT, and I still break out the Midnight Pumpkin every now and then.

My first was a 1982 Rat-Shak Blazer. It had a switch on the top to change from 2wd high to 4WD Low range. It got chewed up by a Bull Mastif and I jumped it until it wouldn't roll straight. That thing took 5 years of total abuse!

A TON of screws were missing, the stock motor had it's pinion and the grub missing, no motor leads, mechanical speed control was busted, wheel wells on the body were cracked like bloody heck, no antenna holder (big whoop), a missing bumper, and no lock nuts for the rims. I got it for 30 bucks, spent way too much money for repairs....Should've gotten a new one. Hard to trust those ebay sellers....

This is a tough one. I think it was a LaTrax car. I got it when I was 13 years old. I can't be sure what it was, but I think it had a GT-40 style body on it. I remember the year because I was on my way to spend the summer with my relatives in San Jose, and I brought the car with me on the airplane. I was running it up and down the isle of this 747 for hours. Ieven loved it because most of them hadn't seen a motorized toy car without a wire attached to it. That was then and this is now. I think they would have a heart attack if you did that today.
The started me down the long, slippery slope. I got the bug, went to the hobby shop and bought a couple more cars over the next few years. five years later, I was working for Air Air Publishing when Model Airplane News was the only magazine, until 1985 when I help launch Car Action Magazine. Who knew that it would all start with a single toy car... http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I had that Issue TOO!! I bought that issue before I had a car. It is the reason I got into RC. No BS.... If it wasn't for that issue of RCCA I would still be a motorhead.. I was really into hotrods then.... My first car was the Tamiya fox because RCCA had an article stating it was the "Fastest out of the box." It took my folks six to eight months to save up the money to get it for me for christmas. I was a LOT yonger then!!!

Well, I guess I really am old compared to you guys. I had some sort of gas powered dune buggy (yup -- looked like the ones in the old Disney movies) back when I was about 12 years old.

In 1973.

Then, I got into 1/8 gas cars in 1985. Had the first non-factory sponsored 4wd car in Arizona. Also raced RC-10 off-road and RC12 on-road. All in '85 and '86.

OK -- I'm ready for the "old" jokes... :p

My first car was a Futaba FX-10, boy was it a piece of junk. I think it took 2 weeks to build it because the screws kept on splitting the parts. And when I finally had it working right, I took it to my LHS track and jumped it, and the rear shock tower snapped in two (after building it snapped it two times too) So my second car was the original RC-10 Championship Edition, still runs, but it's six gear transmission is a bit dated, hehe.

Then I had a RC10lss sold it and got a used RC10T3 sold that. I got a RC10L2 then a XXCR and sold the RC10L2 and traded my XXcr for a Nitro RS4.Got tired of it and sold it. I just got rid of my XXX and got a Street Weapon. Now I want to get a XXX-T. Oops I forgot about the RS4 pro that was stollen from me. My first R/C was the Marui Ninja. This car was awesome till I burnt up the resistor and then traded it away for a Tamiya Frog. This was back in 1984. I still have the Frog, but wish I had the Ninja instead. If anyone out there comes across one, drop me a line and an asking price.
Thanks,
Jason

I remember the Royal Ripper. I wanted it bad. Ended up all my summer cash went to my trusty Marui Big Bear. Have had a XX-4, Yr-4M2pro, XXXKE, Mr4Tc SP, RC-10T but that Big Bear still sits on my pit table to remind me why I do this RC thang!

My first car was a Mercedes 190e, which was CLAP controlled! ie you clapped and it would go forwards or turn in reverse.

In terms of rc cars, I've owned:

Tamiya Lunchbox monster truck (Same as a Midnight Pumpkin).
Tamiya Toyota Hi Lux (Same as a King cab - possibly the first racing truck?)
Schumacher Cougar 2
And now a HPI super nitro impreza...

My first RC car....
I really had to think on this one and figured that my first "non toy" hobby rc car was a 1/10 Bolink Eliminator from the 80's. If I'm not suffering from halftimers yet (not old enough to suffer from oldtimers), I remember the kit came with a cool bumper sticker then that said "He who dies with the most toys wins!" which I still got stuck on an old tool box somewhere in my garage.
I first started out RC with planes, and when it was too windy to fly and had nothing else to do, I got started with RC cars also.

HighX - After I got the Ripper I was actually deciding between the Marui Big Bear and the Tamiya Blackfoot, but ended up with the Royal Crusher because I already had the Ripper. I actually still bash with the Crusher. Had to swap some parts from the Ripper to get it running, so all the Ripper is good for is spare parts. But they were great beginner cars. Now I race a AET3!

Firefox back in '78 or '79. Then I think the next one was a Mountain Man with selectable 2wd and 4wd. Graduated from there to the Sears Lobo and Super Lobo before finally buying a used RC10 with the old gold chassis. Recently bought an RC10GT and love it.

My very first car was a TC3. I got it for christmas last year. So far, i have my TC3 which i try and race whenever possible, and i have followed it up with a Kyosho EP Blizzard (they are slow but can climb over anything!) and then i got more into off-road and saved up for an AE T3 which i also race, and just this summer i finally decided to bite the bullet and buy my first nitro... a traxxas T-maxx which i drive almost everyday!

The first car that I ever raced was a Radioshack Surger, back when the local Hobbytown was holding races in the parking lot. Unfortunately, the stick broke off the radio, and the front wheel got bent. I tried to fix it, but it broke off. I wound up finishing the last main on three wheels.

So from there, I found some Christmas money that hadn't been spent, bought a RTR TC3, and transplanted the batteries from the RSS to the TC3 radio.

Still have the Surger (sans body and most bulk weight) if anyone wants to race. ^_^

Hey, I know I said my first was a Royal Ripper, but I was just checkng eBay and someone was selling old cars for parts. Well, one of 'em was a Radio Shack "Off Road Champ." My old bro's first car. He hated it, gave it to me, and I hated it. But because I liked RC, it got me started looking for better cars and I ended up buying the Ripper out of an RCCA ad I saw. So, the Ripper was really my first, but that Radio Shack car started it all. I even got the pic. Man was it ugly. Plastic molded shocks...nope. Just carved plastic. Eesh.

mojojojo208

let me see... first i had the super champ from tamiya which was a great car except that those aluminum back axle arms would snap if you snagged the tire on something... expensive P.O.S.

then i had a hornet which was great with the floating suspension until you cracked the chassis where they screwed in... then you're gear box would drag on the ground... so i ended up turning it back into a grasshopper with oil shocks...

then i jumped on the Mauri bandwagon with the Big Bear, which was a cool truck but the gear box with those 15 pitch gears would strip after one wheelie... and when it first came out i waited about six months for replacements...

so i opted for a blackfoot, which i also blew the additional 35 for the Thorp diff for it... that car kicked butt... although the high center of gravity on it out of the box made it a tipping nightmare but it still ran tough...

then i got a clod buster which was a great toy... pricey but a lot of fun i have to say...

sold my blackfoot and got a King Cab which was one kickbutt truck out of the box... i actually raced it and won a few A-mains and with the weight of it tore up some little kids cars on the track... that was a hoot...

then i got serious into racing and bought the first Losi truck ( the XT i think) and after racing it once went and bought the Associated 10T truck which was a whole lot better...

but now it's time for some gas fun... goodbye batteries...

My first RC car was a Tamiya Super Shot. Did more backyard bashing and some street stuff (only when the stock tires wore the spikes out) mostly. It really took a licking. I eventually got into racing and purchased these cars:

Team Losi Pro SE
Yokomo YZ-10
(awating my XXX-4)

Raced the Losi and the Yok in stock and mod. I still use the 12 turn quad Reedy motor and my Tekin 310 Speed control for both cars along with my Airtronics XL2P radio. Fast and dependable.

By the way, my brother raced a Blackfoot on a dirt oval in California and won quite a few times. That is what got me started. :D

Started back in the early 90's w/ a Losi Jr. 2 Buggy. I turned that into a JRX Pro SE and got an older JRXT from a friend who also gave some very old parts like an old "Agitator" pan car and a bunch of old Revolution modified motors and cans. The converted the JRXT to an LXT. (I still have the LXT) Around the same time I got a RC10 Team car and sold the ProSE. Then I got a Tamiya F102 F1 car (Pan Style suspension.) Left the Hobby for a long while, then got my current TC3 and about six months ago got a Micro. I've gone through a few cars in my days of racing.

A Marui brand buggy. I forgot the name but it has no lexan or polycarbonate body. Just a framework or rollbars. Large knobby tires at the back that narrows and heightens like a drag race car when in full power. 2wd, all plastic (which was the problem as I stripped the gears, no ball bearings, rendering it useless in a few months) but otherwise a powerful, wild monster. I bought it in Hong Kong (1989?)

i had a couple of Tyco Cars (a couple of Lobos) then i got a Kyosho Rocky that i bought off a classmate for 75 bones (It was already 7 years old then!) well, i ran that Rocky into the ground, fried the motor and shelved it for about 6 years. Last year i dug it out and dumped some money into it, for an ESC, new radio, new motor....well, turned out the drivetrain wouldn't handle the power (kept breaking the chain, and gears) so i decided to retire it on the spot. I have a prospective buyer from Alabama that also owns a Rocky, he's just itchin for me to send it to him (unfortunately, it won't be till i get off deployment  ).

My first car was a Tamiya Blackfoot (1986) After all of the cars I've owned it was probably the most fun I ever had with an rc. This is probably due to the fact that I did things with it I shouldn't have, jumped it off my roof, jumped it into a pool (filled with water of course) a couple of times and numerous other things that make me cringe just thinking about them.

Mini Z(the first car I bought in ten years)

I still drive the Bullhead, the Blue Eagle LS(it still rules, IMO) and the Mini Z. Lots of these cars are sitting (acquiring value) in boxes. Most of them have 1 broken part that I am too lazy to find. Blackfoot#2 was turned into a 12 cell dragster in 1992 and the gears actually melted and fused in the gearbox. I used to always carry $100 to the track, becuase people are always looking to sell their cars and gear to buy new stuff, and when you have the money right there, you can get some good deals. Sometimes people just HAVE to get a new part, and if they don't have the money, they will sell you their old stuff. R/C car racing is like a drug. I have sold stuff at the track myself to buy a new set of matched cells or whatever, just because I made the A-main.

My first car was the Frog in the mid 80's. I remember going to the local track and hearing all the arguments about the frog vs. hornet. The frog had independent rear suspension, and the hornet had the solid axle. Both came with oil filled rear shocks (a big step up at the time).

Anyway, the hornets always seemed to be a little faster, but my frog was way cooler.

Then I went the RC10 route. The RC10 is the car that revolutionized the industry. It's amazing that the best cars being built today are variations of the original RC10.

I just got my first real rc 3 weeks ago....its a kyosho outrage ST2 from like 97 I think. I bought it for 50 bucks.. it came with a tower 3000 radio system and servo. a esc(dont know what kind) and a cheap 19 turn. it does about 25-30 and Im pretty happy with it...yeah I know everyone says that the outrage is outdated but its alot of fun...and it sure beats all the radio huts....which my fastest one topped at 18mph( timed it and did the math)

My very very 1st car was a Porsche 962 I recieved from my dad when he was in the Navy. I was so young I didn't know how to drive it. This was probably 1978. I just remember it was able to turn left and right instead of 'just left while in reverse'.

My first 'hobby' car was a MRC Roadwinner. It somewhat resembled a Tamiya Hotshot, but not as cool. It was shaft driven 4wd, had a 540, was RTR, and waaaaay faster than the Sears Lobos and Nikko Chipmunks that the other kids on the block had.

My 1st R/C kit was a Kyosho Rocky, a chain driven 4wd. It was fast as hell after I bolted on the Trinity Speedworks mod into it. Just too bad I kept on burning out my mechanical speed control.

My 1st R/C racing car was a Traxxas TRX-3. I honestly believe this was the best 2wd buggy of the time.

my 1st nitro car was a HPI RS4 Nitro2. I hated gas powered cars until I finally saw a race of NRS4's and N4Tecs. Sound. Smoke. Smell. Speed. Sweeeet!

My all time favorite car though (though I've never owned one) would be the Tamiya Avante. Being Nuts Is Neat!!!!

My first car (not counting TYCO crapmobiles) is a kyosho alpha electric rally. I've been driving it for about a year. I think my dogbones on it are bad. I just ordered my RC10GT +! THis will be my second "real" car!
