It is very fast!! Fairly durable, the XTM .247 motor tunes well. Handling is not too bad you may have to change the weight of the shock oil and put diff oil in the diff to get it to handle the way you want it too. Just remember when you take a jump let up off the gas before you land so you don't stripr the gears, you don't have a center diff . You can get one it is optional. But over all not a bad vehicle for the price. I am putting a Sirio .30 in mine.

The stock steering servo on mine quit after I tightened the servo saver.(instructions said that warranty won't cover that)

The stock steering saver will not tighten enough to keep the wheels straight under accelleration in high traction areas.

They put ball bearings in the ackerman rack but bushings in the steering post.

The front has cvds rear has dog bones.
The shocks look good, but need fluid change.
The diffs are junk, the first time I applied the brakes hard(it has great brakes) the ring and pinion skipped teeth.
Jumping and landing even off throttle you hear the diffs,

The brakes are adjustable , but not as easy as most buggies.

You need to change the grease out the diffs to silicone.

The stock tires are heavy, and don't hook on anything dry or loose.
(they also help put stress on the diffs)

The engine is ok, and it does have killer top end on the street.

The body is a good stance.

The wheel nuts, and axles are not anodized so the second time I took the wheels off the nut welded itself to the axle upon removale.

My ofna, and sportwerks 17mm nuts did not fit.......................

If you want to run it much at the time you need the option 290 cc tank.

The truck needs steel trans gears, which are a expensive factory option.

It also needs a center diff, another factory option.

On jumps, and rough terrian a buggy- truggy set up has , and needs a smooth underside.
This truck has a hump, which is the spur gear cover.
It has holes in it to let debris out, but on a moist or most any situation when you jump, and land and near bottom out, it will pack dirt into itself.
It also will hang you up on the tracks edges if you need to get back on the track :)

This truck need alot of room to turn also, it's huge, and LONG...

The truck has extra braces, but the chassis bends and stays bent way to easy.
I cart wheeled once off a table top , and bent the chassis towards the rear, at least 1/4" or more., and you can twist the chassis side to side alot to(if you grab it front and rear and twist left and right)

This wreck also rippped the rear left arm off, that tore the rear toe plate in to which is plastic(and they have aluminum option), it bent the front part of the rear hinge holder, It hurt the servo saver also.

This was in 95 degree weather, and at that temp the A arms are way taffy -flimsy.
and the servo saver arm which is also cheap plastic flexed so bad the steering would only move about a 1/8th of inch(the servo just bent the arms instead of turning the wheels) They have a aluminum factory option for that too.

The shock towers seem ok.

The output drive cups wear too fast, I didn't even get a gallon through this truck and the cups had BAD notches in them from the dog bone ends rubbing.

The price seems good now at 339.99 but you need to put all their factory options on it to have half way truck.

I have had about 15 differnt cars and trucks, buggies since last year, and this was the worst quality I have seen......

C'mon. This thing can't be that bad,can it? I've been checking out this board alot, and I'm seriously considering one just to get the hell away from the massive Revo trend http://globalservices.globalhobby.com/globalforum/viewforum.php?f=10&sid=85a05c080db0239a61dfb7d4926afe80

Hugh let me tell you this,my friend has one. I helped him break it in and yes it is fast.BUT,it just dont hold up. every time he drives it, something breaks.in the few weeks hes had it with only 3/4 gal of fuel ran through its had all diff cups replaced, the chassis straighted, steering servo replaced, and lots of other plastic parts to numerous to mention. the engine seems very sound but other than that i fell its a poorly made and set up vehicle.

Ouch! I guess that can hurt the wallet over time. Like I said before,I'm desperate to get out've the Revo. I've been racing it non stop since March, and frankly,I'm sick of it. I feel like I've gotten all that I can get out of it.

The first time it broke, it was the chassis bend, 3stripped out diff cups, and something else on the rear around the rear tranny, i cant remember, but it was so bad that he took it back to the lhs where he bought it and raised such a stink that they fixed and or replaced everything for free. only because they talked him into buying it.

im sry 2 say btu no truck can truley be that weak and them sale it on the market.
MAby he is a ****** driver also its not a basher it is a race truck.

Ball Racing
09-14-2005, 12:23 PM
Well , all I can say is BUY it, and go race it.
Take some jumps, and give it a gallon(if it makes it)
You will find out...

I only raced mine, no bashing.
Well it didn't really last long enough too race much....

I have one it is mostly stock not for long mine has lasted a gallon and nothing has happened to the diffs or anything else.

Ok first off, every truck has it's problems, thats obvious. SECOND, why are you guys whining? It's the cheapest truggy on the market buy at LEAST $200.

Yes, it has a 2 speed, contributing to a weak drivetrain... spend $50 on a center diff option, and ur drivetrain problems are cured....

Also, NO truck should break if you jump it correctly... that has to be a driver issue, so don't blame the truck for your problems.... 90% driver, 10% car, remember that.

Ok the stock servo's are bad??? woopdedoo, tell me a truck whose stock servo's are GOOD! Seriously, name ONE. So spend $100 on better servo's, ur still the cheapest truggy out there.

The chassis bending, buy a chassis brace, and you'll be fine, they're like $50 or so.

And after that... you've got an unbelievably strong truggy. :)

My is strong I have done really nothing to it yet. I am going to get the center diff and put a wing on it.So far I have a 945mg steering servo mx3s radio hump pack battery
proline wheels and tires and axel adapters for them and a nice painted body.

The 2 speed was not a weak link for me.
Second I shouldn't have to do all of those add ons to have a good truck.
Third if you land wrong you need a truck that won't fold up like a paper doll.

I thought it was the truck I wanted ,,until it let me down.

If it was as strong as my other 1/8th scales I buy another one...

But the quality in materials was not in mine.

Yeah, I guess it's as good as a t-maxx, but thats my point...

I have the xtm xtermiantor pro buggy the one with all the hop ups on it. My mammoth st to me has been nothing but a success. Havent had a big problem yet. The one problem I had on it was the cvds pin fell out I fixed it though ca glue :)

Every truck has it's weak spots, your gonna have to spend money to fix them to make it a "good truck". The LSP has weak spots, the Jammin will, the msr flat out stinks, EVERY TRUCK, not JUST the mammoth. The only truck that DOESN"T have weakspots is $2500, and you probably don't even know what it is, so nvm.

Don't blame the truck for your bad landings. I've seen savages fold in half b/c the driver landed wrong, and thats the strongest truck, period! There is NO way that it should "fold up like a paper doll" w/ one wrong landing, unless you jumped it straight up going full throttle.

So stop making the mammoth st look like such a bad truck, when only 10% of it is probably the truck.

Ball Racing
10-14-2005, 08:07 AM
Well of course the mammoth is as tuff as your XTM buggy,,, your comparing XTM to XTM...

The truck looked bad all by itself, I have had too many good kits to be convinced that this is a good truck...

I can land wrong ANY of my other good 1/8th buggies-truggies and they hold up... Thats how I am comparing this truck, by my other equipment...

(I don't think the lsp is the highest quality either)

I have spent about 15,000 on this hobby in the last year and a half, and had around 20 plus vehicles, so I am telling you what I have witnessed from this one..

You can defend it , thats fine,, if you think it's ok to have to spend money on it to make it ok, thats fine...

danieljk
10-14-2005, 03:04 PM
I don't understand what's wrong w/ it either, i've got an xtm xterminator, and it's just as strong as a 1/8 buggy should be! Also, maybe a "bad landing" to you may not be so bad compared to what this guys doing. Not even Duratrax is that weak though, well... MAYBE, but still, somethings wrong there.

Look compared it to the Revo that is 470 at towerhobby. But I can get a Mammoth off of ebay for 340, new. Get the Center differential for 50.Now that is 390. And if you want a cheap good servo get a the one's used in the CEN Genesis for about 25 off of ebay, which has 144oz of torque, and a speed of .18sec. Now that is a total or 415, And if you want get a set of Aluminum hew hubs for about 10. Now that is about 425, and you save 45 dollors, so yo u can go buy some gas and batteries, and you have a truck that goes about 10 mph faster, and has a faster steering servo. Now what wrong with that

Ball Racing
10-30-2005, 09:11 AM
Whats wrong with that?
The "rest" of the truck..

2fast2slow
10-30-2005, 10:36 AM
What are you talking about. What else is wrong with the Mammoth ST

Quad Racer
10-30-2005, 11:44 AM
The only wrong with to me is. The cvd pins. The servos and I need a center diff.

Ball Racing
10-30-2005, 05:23 PM
How are your out put drive cups, coming out the diff holding up?
They have notches forming in the slots don't they?

Hold your steering servo arm from moving, then see how easy it is to move the front tires left to right, (servo saver spring way to soft) and you can't adjust it very tight.

Hard accelleration on high grip or grass, then turn fully and the tires want to stay straight.

Take a long metal straight edge, and hold on the bottom of your chassis, and tell me if it's still perfect flat..

Take your left or right rear tire and hold it and flex it like you are steering it left and right, more play then is good for holding adjustments..

2fast2slow
10-30-2005, 06:26 PM
How do you think a Mammoth ST will hold up with a O.S. .21 VZ-B V-Spec, which can produes a max rpm of 44,000, and a max hp of 2.94, with a Novarossi 9853 tuned-pipe exhaust system

danieljk
10-30-2005, 09:28 PM
it, or any other motor doesn't produce that much.... 1.5hp at best... but anyways, get a center diff, and it should hold up to just about anything.

Quad Racer
10-30-2005, 11:13 PM
Yup and if you dont have fun with your diffs.

I have an ST and I am almost done with the first gallon. I have had the usual issues: weak steering and brakes out of the box, and the differentials were making scary noises. A little research on XTM's own forum had all the solutions. All the ST really needs is a careful teardown and rebuild (all the experts recommending doing this with all RTRs anyway!) When doing so, upgrade the servo saver, which includes bearings (be careful with spring tension or you munch the stock servo) and shim the diffs. Change the 100wt shock oil with something a bit lighter. Oh, the other wierd thing that happened to mine was I once ran the temp up to 350. (my fault, I got too crazy with the tuning) I took it easy with the needle valve, cut some holes in the body. The engine still runs well in spite of my abuse.

danieljk
11-27-2005, 04:40 PM
it is only for a one speed, but the 2 speed will kill ur diffs

I have a mammy st and i love it. My sponsor got one in the shop and wanted me to promote it form him. The first time i raced it i qual 3rd out of 19 truggys. Keep in mind they were all jammins and hot boddies. I put 7000wt in front diff, 5000 in center, 2000 in rear. I put the center diff in it, aluminum center plate and uprights, 290cc fuel cell, aluminum rear hubs, and a rear wing off of a XTM XLB. I put 70wt oil in front, 60wt in rear. The truck works pretty well. The stock motor is ok. Its plenty for back yard bashing, but just don't have the grunt. I sheared off the pins in front cvd's but replaced them with piano wire and never happed again. For sure the stock radio and servos make ok papperwieghts. We race indoors now that its cold so we only run a 15 min amain. I don't know how well it will hold up outdoors for an hour. For the money its not a bad truck.

Hey guys putting a center diff on will cure most of your diff problems. I put one on mine and I have not had to rebuild any diffs since. The Mammoth St can be made into quite a race truck with the right after market parts. XTM has came out with a Mammoth Pro that address alot of the short coming of a the original Mammoth St.

I just finished putting in a new clutchbell today. It is a 13 tooth GS clutchbell this combination with the center diff really makes my mammoth st fly. The mammoth st just keeps getting better and better with each new update :)

OK...so i just bought the Mammoth ST last nite. I found it relatively cheap at a hobby shop online for 324 free shipping. I was just wondering if some of you could lead me in the right direction for mods. What 1st, what company or website do you recommend. This is my 1st and backyarding it with 4 others who have xtm mammoth, teamlosi lst, ravage25 and ofna mutilator.

Suggestions please. No need to rip me for buying it, just some mod help would be greatly appreciated. Ive read that the diffs are junk and some other things out of the box. I was thinking roll cage, diffs and new wheels to start.

I don't have this truggy but I had an XLB for a short time (basicly the same r/c). Had many issues with the diff supports, soft wheels, 2sp tranny and I didn't like the super soft and bendy arms.

WELCOME to the forums coneycone! I believe XTM's forum is under globalhobby

I did actually find that website but I failed to find a forum on there.
Will look a bit closer.

So, is Global Hobby the distributor of XTM products?
I am new to nitro RC, went out and picked up a Mammoth ST on Monday.
Still breaking it in, can't wait to drive it for 'real'.

EDIT: Found it! In the tiniest font at the very bottom of the page.

Not to hurt your feelings fingertight (and I could be wrong) but XTM makes some strong engines but I'm not a big fan of their R/C's. I had the XLB (which I believe the MST is the exact same chassis) and didn't care for it. Too many probs for my taste. So what I'm saying is IF you don't like your Mammoth don't give up on nitro's, there are plenty of other good ones to choose from.

Have fun and welcome to the BIG BLOCKS!

FingerTight

Thanks Quinton and no hurt feelings here, thanks for the welcome.
After hearing the thing run for the first time, I think I'm hooked.
I haven't had an R/C since I was a kid building my RC10 in the garage, what a difference!

So, the bug has been fast asleep, I just woke it up with a little Nitro fumes!
If the Mammoth proves to be a weak platform, I'm sure I will be posting up here looking for the 'unbreakable' one. (yea right, i'm sure any of these trucks can be broken relatively easy)

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, I am reallllly looking forward to the families next desert trip where we will all be debuting our new 'toys'. My cousins each got trucks as well, a Revo 3.3 and an Inferno...we shall see who is still alive at the end of the weekend.
