R/C Boat Modeler Magazine did an article about completely tricking out a Villian EX. They upgraded the running hardware, electronics, motors, put on turn fins, and gave it a flashy paint job. I don't know if the article's still online, but you could check out www.rcboatmodeler.com (http://www.rcboatmodeler.com)

This is the article you're looking for: Villain EX hop-up article (http://www.rcboatmodeler.com/rb/articles/traxxas_villian.asp)

Please keep in mind that you don't need to perform all of the modifications all at once, and that it's in fact better to do one at a time and test the boat after each change to see how each influences performance.

Just out of curiousity, how much faster was the Villian after all the modifications? I read the article, and it didn't have any before/after speed comparisons.

I'm thinking about getting one of these and hopping it up, as I've discovered I don't really have the talent, or patience to build boats from scratch.

Thanks,

Zach

I have a Villain EX. So far I have installed beryllium counter-rotating X447 Octura props. Balanced and polished. A cooling kit has been installed. I also scraped the stock water pickup to make room for the autobailer that was installed. I used a larger brass tubing to help bring in more water for cooling. I'm also running 2 six cell 3700 packs.

Thanks
Robert

Matt:

How much of a speed difference is there between a stock Villain and your hot rodded one??

I've been thinking on and off about snapping up one of these things to play with, so any input would be cool.

thanks,

Zach

I agree with Matt about trying one upgrade at a time to see the difference. But when I did my upgrades I started with water cooling, then the props, and the auto bailer. It made a nice jump in performance. On my third run for the day I clipped a dead head in the water. It bent the right side prop and tore up the 28 tooth drive gear. Cheap fix considering how bad it sounded.

Hey Rexy32,
Does the water cooling effect performance?
The props must have made the only real diiference that created the "nice jump in performance"? What props did you use?

Well, the water cooling allows the use of more aggresive gearing/props/batteries without burning up the motors.

It is true the X447 Octura props show a big jump in performance. Water cooling is just as imporant. You lose energy due to friction and heat. I also changed out any wiring connections to the Deans ultra connectors for the same reasons.

Battery packs have a large impact on performance also. In this case you get what you pay for.

OH so true... don't waste your time on cheapo ebay packs.

So if you are to list the changes I should make IN ORDER what would they be.
I don't plan on changing the engines this year.

Thanks

To see the biggest bang for your buck I would upgrade the props with the adapters. Sense this will be a large stress on the stock titan 550's I would also install the motor cooling kit at the same time. Your probable looking around $60 to $70 for this upgrade. I'm still using stock motors with no complaints. My next upgrade will be to go fromsix cell packs to seven cell battery packs.

Thanks Rexy32
I'm ordering the props and adapters next week.

I know you'll be happy with the upgrade. But I highly recommend that you install the cooling kit. You'll be taking a huge risk of over heating your motors.
You should also be prepared to do some finish work on your new props along with balancing them. I used the Top Flite Power Point (Magnetic) Prop Balancer. It worked like a champ.

I think we should start posting picks of our boats and the progress we are making on them. I'll start posting picks after take my villian out today.

I added the same props, pinion gears, autobailer, cooling coils, and MRC trim tabs. Running against a friend with a stock Villain EX, the perfomance increase was quite noticeable! Please elaborate on the cooling pickup up grade..sounds interesting. Can I go up to 7 cell packs with the stock EVX and what motor upgrade can it handle? Suggestions?
