View Full Version : Best Paint Competition - July 2005
Piggy89373
07-01-2005, 02:09 PM
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of July and will close at Midnight (EST) on Sunday, 31 July 2005.
Restrictions: Body must have painted numbers, lettering, and/or punctuation on the body. Major punctuation marks may be used if they are the primary graphic. Small punctuation marks such as the comma, period, colon, semi-colon, equals and plus signs, slashes, hyphen, underline, and similar marks do not count. There are no restrictions as to what body may be used so long as they include a painted number or lettering on them. Decals using numbers and/or lettering do not qualify for the restriction.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
Each area will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the cars chances of winning. Please limit your entries to 3 photos per car. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention for the People Choice.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any Car may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any Car submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Please refrain from insulting bodies in anyway.
6) Restrictions: see above and use your imagination.
7) 3 entries per person.
8) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
9) Imagination is key
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
This month, the June Best Paint winner will judge the competition. If he/she cannot perform his/her duties, I will select a replacement judge.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If the aforementioned comments are made by a contestant, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permited to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Next months Best Paint Competition will be restricted to concourse bodies only.
Let's show off your talents and have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Next months Best Paint Competition will be restricted to concourse bodies only. What do you mean by this exactly? By ROAR rules, any paint job would be valid for entry in a concourse competition..

ImLow78 will be this months judge.
Nutter, here's the concourse rules. (http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=190763&highlight=concours) It shouldn't be a surprise, and yes, any painted body is a valid entry; however, true concourse bodies will always score higher than a good paint job. But, worry about that next month. ;)
Nutter
07-02-2005, 02:10 PM
Piggy: Those rules are specifically for a "classic inspired" concourse event - so I take it that's what next month will be also, classic-inspired?
Good point though, I need to actually finish a body THIS month first... the last few competitions have passed without me finishing a single one. :p I'm already having nightmares about this one actually - I picked up a new comfort-grip X-Acto knife last week, and now my dreams are filled with me not being used to its feel and cutting right through the bodies. But at least I'm thinking about the entry I guess! ;)

Nutter, next month will be an open concourse competition, not a classic inspired. The link was to give you and example of what to expect. If you want an example of a concourse body, take a look at MikeVillena's threads.

Hachi, I've liked that body since the last time you showed it to us.
Tabushi, your wife has some great art skills, however, that body does not conform to the restrictions of this month. Just a suggestion, but the month after next would be a better month to enter that particular body.
gtoman2u, unless your body is hiding a graphic that meets the restrictions, you'll want to take the advice given above.

what r u using to post yr pics?try adjusting the size of the pics?
Piggy89373
07-14-2005, 04:31 PM
Definitely adjust the size of your pics. There's a number of ways to do it, do a quick search on here for tips and how-to's. Secondly, your light source may be the cause of showing defects because of shadows. You're taking a picture of a predominately white car body on a white background. You need something a bit darker for your background. This will help everything to stand out a bit more without reflecting any deficiencies ing the surface of the lexan.

Hi dudes,
i have to take out my entree because i am illegal !!!!
Once again i did a body for Patrick Schäfer/Team Shepherd Germany for the European Championship, this year hold in greece, and once again, like last EC in Luxemburg, this body won the "Best Paint" Competition. So i am illegal and have to take my body out of contest here.
But i am really happy to get this title again. The contest was yesterday and Patrick won with my body, really cool.
So here two pics from the Car, it is a Shepherd Speed 2005, the driver Patrick Schäfer and his girlfriend A. in greece.

The original intent was to keep a body from being entered in multiple competitions on the boards, or continually re-entered. I think this is one exception where the body can remain in this competition. I don't foresee anyone complaining that SRC beat them in Greece and doesn't want him to beat them again here on the boards.
Unless the judge for this month's competition has a problem with it, I think SRC's entry should remain.

Boston - I still don't see how in the heck anyone could do that kind of detail work on such a small body! The logo (deer?) appears to be less than .5" yet has enough detail to pass for a fine-scale print. Wow... How long did it take your eyes to readjust to "real" sized objects after painting that sucker? Heck, the car in the picture is larger than the real thing. I'd be lucky to paint the entire thing one colour hehehe
Barry Scott - single blade? Dude, you could be a microsurgeon! I really like the originality of the work. You did a perfect Moe!
src7777 - Whatever Piggy said, I second it. That is a LOT of detail work!
GoofyTexan - nice work, bro! That candy red in the first two really shines. What part of Texas do you hail from? I'm just northwest of Austin.
Sneezer - niiiiiiiiiice! Very original work, too. (ps - bless you)
Paul Songas - That's the first dragster body I've seen on here. Pretty cool stuff, bud. Nice original artwork =)

Tamiya M02 Chassis
HPI Volkswagen Kombi body
Tamiya purple, and Tamiya gold spray paint.
For this body I took a Cadbury chocolate bar wrapper, photocopied the lettering, enlarging it until it was just the right size.
Cut the paper out and then traced around it onto frisket paper, the frisket paper is then used as the mask. The 2 tone paint job for the rest of the body was done using masking tape.

Albie, another option is to open a Photobucket account for free. To do this, go to www.photobucket.com. It's pretty simple, and once again, it's free. Upload your pics to Photobucket. Make sure you've adjusted the size of them so you don't overwhelm the boards here. Usually, 400X600 is plenty large enough.
Next, copy the url for your entry pics and place them in a message here in this format: your pic url here. If you use the Go Advanced button, you can do it the easy way and have the boards add this for you.

This doesn't count as it was done MANY years ago, but this was all hand cut out of airbrush frisket, and painted from the inside. The colors were all Pactra pearls and metallics, as the photos don't do the subtleties justice. There were pearl purple "Bells" in the pearl white background. It was a really cool body in the sun.

Body: 1/10 Excursion (Proline)
Chassis: Traxxas Revo
Paint: 14 colors/shades of Faskolor and Spastix Chrome
Mask: hand cut made of 3m Blue masking tape and a small piece of cloth mesh
It sure is hard following the "3 picture" rule! deciding on 3 pictures that show enough of the body and detail isn't easy!

is there really a 3 picture rule????i thought it was only 3 entries??????
It's not one of the "numbered" rules like the #"7) 3 entries per person." rule. but it says "Please limit your entries to 3 photos per car." in the paragraph about how the photo's will be judged. I don't know... never entered one of these contests before and I don't wanna get disqualified for not following the rules or guidelines!

Rat, awesome paint.
Everyone else, ImLow78 is not able to fulfill the duties as judge. I received word of this today. Considering how late this is in the game, I have very little choice but to judge the contest myself, unless RidgeWayBodies wishes to judge (and notifies me by midnight tomorrow night.)
Edit: RidgeWayBodies will judge this months competition. He came in second last competition with a great paint job. Since he scored the highest for his own paint job, he's more than qualified and deserving to judge this month.

Just so you guys know here is what's going on. "right now I'm in the middle of remodeling my new house, "thanks to my wife :( " and my only computer "other then my mothers at here house that I'm using now" took a crap on me two and a half weeks ago." that's the reason for me being unable to judge the month. I'm sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. So I'm blaming my wife and her big ideas for our new house! Shannon

Lidz, beautiful work.
Fester, not too bad, you're definitely improving. My big question is are you using Testor's model paints (enamels)?
Ridge, I don't envy you for judging this one. There's quite a few entries, and they all look awesome. Post your results when done.
All entries, thanks for making this month's contest another tough one for the judge. Best of luck.

Ok, I have all the judging done. There were a couple bodies that were entered that did not meet the criteria. I went ahead and judged them anyhow. There were two people that entered more than one body. I judged all of them and placed the body that got the highest score. Overall, everyone did a great job and should be proud of each body the do. Enough talk, here are the results…
1st Place – LEADFOOT
2nd Place - src7777
3rd Place – SNEEZER
4th Place - Barry_Scott
5th Place – AirBoston
6th Place - Paul Songas and RaceTrackRat
7th Place - savagepicco26
8th Place – Yendor and GoofyTexan(budweiser)
9th Place – delboy
10th Place - Hachi_Roku, GoofyTexan(dukes) and Tim K
11th Place - GoofyTexan(revo)
12th Place – extremetmaxxer
13th Place - FESTER2004
14th Place – Tabushi
15th Place - gtoman2u

I painted it for Justin, who then listed it on eBay. It is an actual ebay auction, but I think it was one of his friends or something playing with him. (The winning bidder lives in the same area.) It's all fun 'n games till ebay wants their fees! :O

that's what i figured. i saw your body and the logo looked familiar. there's a guy that races locally that has a kanai 3 and has BODZ do his bodies. definitely a sweet logo. i just emailed him to see about getting some Mugens for my MBX5.
