View Full Version : Tire Mounting Question ?

Hi fellow RCers, I just received an extra set of wheels for an RC10 T4 and I have a set of Proline Road Rage tires that I want to mount on them.
In the instuction sheet that came with the wheels they " Recommend cutting a small 1/8" hole on the inside wall of the tire for venting. This will keep the tire from flat spotting. "
I was wondering, Does every one do this ? It seems a shame to cut a hole in a brand new set of tires

You put the hole on the inside of the wheel, not the tire.

You wont ruin the wheel. You dont even notice it. If you dont put a hole in the tire or wheel, then you are going to have some major balance problems.

Thanks for the input, Still seems strange to me. I just looked again, and the wheel actually already has two small holes in it. I would say they are a large 1/16 of an inch. I am not sure how this prevents the tires from flat spotting. But what do I know?
Does any one use a stand to store their car on when not in use? It seems like leaving it sitting on the tires, while stored would be the worst thing for the tires, as far as causing flat spots.

a lot of wheels come with the holes already in there, because the hole is a requirement. the reason cars dont use holes is because they are completly air right and preasurized. this would be posible with RC but cost and weight would be very significant.

If you run in the wet or mud, the hole in the tire gives the water a place to get out as the tires spin. If you always run only when its dry, hole in the rim lets air out when you jump and prevents the rc from bouncing due to air that would be trapped in the tire. Most MTs vent the rim and most 1/8ths vent the tire. Its complicated by having a liner inside the tire and the tires glued on the rims.
All my rcs sit on something so the tires don't flat spot. I use anything thats convienient and tall enough to get the wheels off the ground. My savage is sitting on a 1/2 case of shotgun shells for instance.

Thanks Duster, What you say makes sense to me, But what I still don't understand is how the holes prevent flat spots. And also why the instuctions that came with the wheels recommend adding holes in the tires when the wheels already have holes in them.
I hope you let your savage cool off before you set it up on the shotgun shells. I sold my guns some time ago, so I may have to invest in one of those little stands for my T4.

imagine you glue your tire with no holes and somehow you got less air trapped in one tire.what would happen?that tire, because of fewer air inside, will have the carcasse sucked in and create flatspots.besides vent holes prevents blowing tires too.makes the ride less bouncy and let the foam in the tires to do their job fully

Bashfull - if there were no holes, because the tires are fully glued to the rims (sealed), they would balloon and shrink with temperature due to the air expanding and contracting with temperature.
The wheels on both my 1/8th buggies have no holes - those tires came with 4 holes, equally spaced, in the tread face.
Don't worry, by the time I get everything cleaned up, its cool enough to sit on that 1/2 case of shotgun shells. Its nice and heavy and stays put. Makes a nice car stand. I do have 4 real car stands, but that only half of what I need, so I started using whatever was on hand that was right size and height. Lots cheaper that way, more money to spend on parts, tools and hop-ups, lol!

Thanks guys, I can see the reason for having the holes now. I guess the only thing I still am not clear on, is why the instructions that came with wheels ( Team Associated ) recommend that you put holes in the tires, when the wheels already have two holes in them.
As far as preventing flat spots while the car is stored, I guess I will go ahead and pick up a full case of shotgun shells, that way I will have enough for two stands, for when I get that on road car some day. :D

a really cheap way to do it is to just put the truck in the extra tires...
