Has anyone tried using hobby shop acrylic paint in place of more expensive RC specific paint?

At the local Michaels they sell acrylic paint in bottles just like Faskolor for $.99 a bottle. Specifically I'm referring to DecoArt paints. All the colors are there and the only difference I can see is the hobby paint is thicker and 75% cheaper. Both paints show metal, plastic, wood, fiberglass and ceramic as possible uses and clean up with water. Sure makes me wonder.

I use createx paint from an art store. It's half the price of fascolor and it's closer to me then driving to the hobby shop.

Welcome to the Boards, dog!

Most Michaels will carry Createx paints. It's the same stuff as Faskolor and usually runs about a buck or so. That's the stuff you want. I'm not sure about the DecoArt paints, though, but if you look around they may have Createx paints.

I bought a bunch of that Deco stuff----STAY AWAY FROM IT!! When it dries it looks nice but the moment your lid starts to flex , the paint will crack and chip off. I believe it might be missing the flex additive that is used in both the Faskolor and Creatix. Faskolor and Creatix are made from the same manufacturer, but the manufacturer makes the metalic colors only for Faskolor. I use Creatix for shading mainly because they spray on soo easily and also because they cost cheap. Creatix is great. The whites and the blacks are the exact same on both ends, some of the metalic colors are the same, but they all seem to lack that extra glow that Faskolor provides in their paints.

Good luck--PS if you look at my micro pics all the reds and yellows are done with creatix because they're easy to blend

Hey folks, thanks for the fast responses and good info. RespirologyRC I'll benefit from your experience and stay away from the DecoArt stuff. I looked at the Createx paints at Michael's but they were the same price as Faskolor at the LHS. I guess I'll just bite the bullet for the few colors I need and keep searching for good prices.
