I've asked this question of several collectors of military models, and so far I've discovered no clear consensus.
How important are functional details on a military model?
Obviously, if a tank or vehicle is to be displayed in a diorama or battle scene, turrets and guns should rotate and elevate, but what about other items? Personally, I really like the tactile satisfaction of rolling wheels and treads, and suspension with a little give is a definite plus. However, I'm indifferent on opening hatches unless the interior below them is detailed.
Trouble is, there is frequently a big cost differential between models with and without such things. It is expected that large, highly detailed pieces like the Franklin Mint Sherman (http://www.diecastxmagazine.com/content/motor/pool_1.asp) would have such detail, but when is it worth the extra expense? Does it depend on the scale?
