www.kodak.com has a free download that I use to edit, crop and resize my pix. If you have a program for a digital camera then you might be able to edit them on that. On Kodak in the edit area, you can resize them to "Best for Web". You have to go through the edit program even if you do not do any other things to your pix. It's fairly easy to use once you get the hang of it.
I go into paint and hit open. I then hit edit "select all" and take the extra back ground out. Then I click on the white that is left and pull it in until there is no more white showing. Works good for me.:D

I use "Picture It 2000", a Microsoft product. For these pages, I select "Save for web", then choose to save to half web page size. I'll choose 56k for the download speed, and either better or best for quality. This works rather well, especially considering that I'm starting with a HUGE (for the web) 2 megapixel photo.
