For the 550 size Traxxas motors, can I replace with a 540?

they dont look all that different to me, but my friend wants the dual motor with evx traxxas boat.. and i was wondering if it would be possible to put in a mid range 540 inplace of the stock, whilst saving money from using the more expensive trinity "maxx" motors.

Don't do it. Looks the same, different animals. Its not just the fan.

the 540 motors will bolt in to the same location, but they can not handle much more than 8 cells. Also, the trinity maxx motors do not work well in that marine application. I would recommend keeping the stock set-up and running 14 cells. I would also add watercooling to the stock motors. RC Boat Modeler did an article o hopping up this boat. I will try to find and post a link.
