View Full Version : I was thinking of a big block Monster truck....

I'm currently down to a NTC3 car, and am looking to get a Big block Monster truck. Anything to look at other than the LST, or MGT ? I don't like the Savage as I have had to work on 1 in the past......

Perhaps a Revo, with a big block conversion?

I like the size of the LST, but would like to have it handle good as well, as it will be eventually going to a track.

EDIT: DOUBLE POST, please delete one :D

And to add....I don't care about the included radio, as I will just get another spectrum receiver for it :D

Well for a big block the LST is a good handling truck, with plenty of power.. Also like the MGT.. Nobody seems to mention the TNX which is very stable truck..

I agree, the LST handles great. From everything I've read the MGT and TNX are great handlers as well. Out of the box the LST is the fastest of the bunch, but also the most expensive thanks to the JR XS3 radio system.

I wouldn't do a big block conversion in a Revo honestly. The truck is too small to put that kind of power down effectively. If you need or want more power out of one, I'd just put an OS .18 TM in it. If that's still not enough, then get a TZ.

I'll cast another vote for the LST. I've got one, and it rocks.

I also have an MGT though, and I really, really like the way it drives too.

I'm getting a TNX Pro some time when I get money as I really like the way the truck is laid out and all of the features it comes with.

who makes the TNX pro? I have not heard of it....

Tamiya. There's actually nothing wrong with the "standard" TNX, but most people are going for the Pro nowadays since you get almost 300 dollars in upgrades for about 100 bux. Other than the Pro-Line goodies (shocks, tires, wheels) and the pretty blue heatsink head, they're exactly the same truck.

Ugg...No thanks  MY last Tamiya was my Frog, and I'd like to keep it that way..... :D

I'm liking the LST more and more.....it's prob the shocks :D

It was like 23 Years ago, I think...... :D

But I think I will get a LST, just checking on the best price I can get......I plan on selling the stock radio & receiver anyways, so there is some savings right there :D

I found a LST on ebay, minus radio & receiver (servo's are installed) with a sportwerks .26 engine, and a couple extra parts, that seems to be in excellent shape (seller claimed 5 tanks threw the truck) and should be delivered today.

I ordered a 2nd spektrum receiver for the truck already......

EDIT:box just showed up :D

Seller said it only went threw 5 tanks of gas......except for the few scratches on the head, I would swear it was brand new :D

LST rocks IF you manage to run it consistently. You need also to prepare an amount twice or even 3X of the stock to evenly consider to rock it hard. In my LHS, Mach .26 kept piling up for some reason but the staff there will not say why there are LST engines for repair or return. They don't want to say that LST's engine always crap out.

This came with a Sportwerks .26....better than the stock engine?

I haven't heard of them nuking as often, but then again, not nearly as many people have bought them. To be honest, I think they're almost the same motor, but I'm not really sure. I know the Mach is a pile-o-****, but I've heard good things about the Sportwerks. If it does blow up, just buy a better motor. If it doesn't, all the better. It should make great power, as even the Mach's do that...until they explode.

What else can I fit in there that makes more power, that I can mount the shaft start to? That is a plus in my book...

If you want POWER install Collari .30 but prepare to change some of your gears to titanium from spur to the inside of transmission. Running a 15lbs truck nearly 50 mph is disaster waiting to happen.

I hear good things about that engine....what does it go for? I plan on the titanium spur gears anyway, but does the internal gears i nthe trans need to be upgraded as well?

Yes. I suggest you remove the reverse and the Hi/Lo gears for lesser rotating gears. Use titanium gears outside the transmission (1st & 2nd) and the spur. Change the clutch spring & shoe to heavy duty ones. Arms upgrade to RPM, Diff cover to alloy, your drivetrain and CVD won't last long either change to MIP full set including the drive cups, bulkhead to alloy and chassis side rails to alloy. If you stretch it some more, change the chassis plate to solid steel plates. Most of all, put a heavy duty roll cage. If you bash it hard, prepare a spare body, the stock won't last long. After you install all these things, your truck will be more heavier so change the stock spring to stiffer ones and change the shock shaft to titanium ones for more durability. ONLY after all these changes before you can really enjoy your truck.

If I were you, get the TNX Pro. You don't need to change anything, it is light and the plastic parts are beefy, the engine is flat out amazing and reliable. Out of the box, break in for two hours and you're done ready to race/bash hard. It's your choice. Have fun!

Aluminum instead of plastic, steel instead of aluminum, full roll cage....pretty much takes away the effect of the big engine, doesn't it?

I'm not looking to build a tank, just would like to go a little bit faster :D
Truck came with 2 sets of stock arms, so if I go threw 2 sets of stocks, I'll go RPM arms...

I plan on getting the forward only gearset....does this lighten the truck a little, I would think ? Right now from the servo issues, there is no forward\reverse servo, I moved it to the throttle servo that went dead, and am currently using a header spring to hold the shifter in forward....

Most LST owners are going to this direction anyway, so it's kinda standard for the upgrades that I mentioned :p .

That's the thing with the LST. It is a very heavy truck and the plastic parts can't support it. If only RPM will produce all the plastic parts for LST and makes it alot beefier (oversize) or instead of plastic, use hardened nylons as material for it's parts. At least it is still lighter than metal.

You weren't kidding....I just weighed it, and it tops at 12lbs, 10oz with a almost full tank of gas.....

It is considered as heavy truck at 13 lbs. As I have mentioned, the plastic parts can't support the weight because of the material (plastic) is not that very good. Added to that, the design of it's parts (it's not beefy if you ask me). The example of a good design in each part is the Kyosho Gigacrusher. Each part is oversized to serve it's purpose but also because kyosho designed it that way it is heavier than LST even with one engine. Consider the REVO, it is the lightest truck today but because of the design flaw and the plastic material used, the Arms are not strong enough even for a 9.2 lbs truck. What I am saying is LST is a good truck BUT you need to beef it up with stronger material sold on the market (RPM).

I'll prob go RPM arms in the future, but I need to break the stock arms first, then the 2 sets of stock arms it came with first......if it seems to break the arms really easy, I'll just get the RPM's....

How many here have broken a stock arm, and what were you doing when it happened? Just curious.....

We at slapmafro.com have broken a few arms when bashing hard. We've got RPMs ready to install.

I can tell you ALOT (stock). RPM released the arm months after the LST was released so owners need to endure the pain of changing the arms frequently. Even with low ramp, put it in the air for like 2-3 feet if it land in two wheels instead of four let alone some nasty cartwheel expect to have it cracked.
