According to the esc specs, it is good down to 15 turn motors. So it should work fine with that 17 turn. It shouldn't overheat too much as long as you keep the truck moving and not just sit and do donuts and the like. Stay away from really deep grass if you can. Give it a rest in-between batteries to cool down as well.
Stay away from any water. You don't want to fry that new esc ;)

What gearing is he running? He might want to get a 15T pinion.

A 15T pinion would help keep the motor cooler, but monitor your motor temps. to make sure its not running to hot.

JMO, The 17x2 motor is great for a hard packed surface! But for bashing and racing in a soft and high drag area like grass 17x2 motor will over heat and you'll have to gear it way down to get the torque you'll need to get him of the line and around corners.
The ESC you choose is good but if you plan to run/Bash on any soft high drag areas(Tall Grass) I would recommend a 19x1 motor. I have had great luck with The Reedy 19T spec Quad Mag Motor with a gearing range for grass start with the stock gearing and if all is cool then work your way up!

We talked in depth of good motors for the pede! JMO The 17x2's are great for hard pack tracks the 19x1 are great for soft soils and heavy drag areas! or go BL! It cost more now but in the long run it will save you :D !
