View Full Version : First boat
What do you guys recommend for a first boat? Something along the lines of a v-hull or a cat. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. :D

What type of power are you looking at? Price range? Just these 2 questions alone help to narrow the field down.
There are more that we can get into such as how much R/C experience do you have, if you want RTR or a kit, if you already have some gear or starting from scratch.
I do have some experience, I've had a few rc10's and team losi vehicles, but I'm completely new to boats. I think a kit would be pretty fun to do, but it really doesn't make much difference to me right now. I'm thinking between $200-$400 if that's realistic, it doesn't have to be lighting fast(although that would be nice)and it can be electric or gas. Thanks.

That would put you into a Nitro Hammer, CEN Racing Aqua Jet or if you want to wait a couple of weeks, the Aeromarine Mean Machine 18 for starters.
If you go electric, you already have the gear to run one of those so you could get a better boat for your money.
Out of the three nitro boats you told me about which one do you think is better? I think that CEN racing aqua jet looks real good, it looked pretty quick in the video clip I saw to.
I have more nitro stuff left than I do electric. I forgot to mention that I had a pretty hopped up HPI RS-4.

All 3 in my mind are good boats but each has it's own quirks. If I were buying one right now I'd go with the MM 18. The wait for it to hit the streets has been frustrating to say the least as it's been in the works for several years now. It is well built and doesn't need much added if anything added to it. The higher price tag will be worth it over the other two. I have had experience, albeit limited, to the others and have had the prototypes of the MM 18's in my hands.
What's the advantage or disadvantage to electric over nitro or gas?
What are some good kits to build and who makes them? Is the "short stuff" by Dumas any good, or would a bigger boat be better? Thanks for your help. :)

The Short Stuff is short like it's name says and not a lot of room either. There are so many boats available today it's difficult to tell you what to buy. Take your time looking to find what you like, not us, then we can advise you from there.
All forms of power have there pros and cons so again it's up to you to choose which type to go for. Nitro, more finicky but nothing like the smell of nitro plus you'll need more support equipment. Electric, quiet but you'll want extra battery packs and chargers to keep you going. Gas, a little more money initially to an extent but you save in less support gear and gas is a lot cheaper than nitro.
I'm not into electrics any more so I can't really help you out there. The MM 18 is appealing because if it comes out the way that it's supposed to be it could be very upgradable as your experience grows. We'll be seeing people putting .21' and .45's in them if Remy and the gang at Aeromarine went with engine rails instead of a formed fiberglass motor mount.
Being upgradeable is very important to me , I'm glad you mentioned that. Oh by the way, I live in Coldwater which is only like 45min from where you live I believe. If you ever have any races or anything let me know. My e-mail is twillison@bds-suspension.com. Thanks again.

You missed out by 2 months! We had a Fun Run here on Memorial Day weekend and had a lot of boaters show up. It looks like it will be an annual event. Maybe we can get together sometime before Labor Day weekend. There used to be some other boaters in the Coldwater area that used to be in here, I haven't seen them in a while posting though.

You can ask the others too!
It looks like one of the old Bagshot boats that Warehouse Hobbies used to sell but with no hatch. They went for $29.00 new. I might have some of the hardware that went with those boats lying around in my basement, I bought the SPD-E hardware to put into a .12 mono, the gear couldn't handle the power.
If you wanted to go electric you have a lot of work to do but I'd forget it for nitro use.
If you're doing some shopping and want to get some good deals and have the money this weekend, Rider's Hobby Shop, north of I-94 exit 76 (S. Westnedge Ave.) is having a going out of business sale starting today with the doors being closed on Monday. I'm heading over there in a few minutes myself to grab up a bunch of stuff. They were the only LHS that kept stuff in stock for boaters for over 20 years. I gotta beat my buddies over there before they tap them out.
Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder what that Miss Llumar will go for?
