View Full Version : Anyone put a BL motor in a budget Tamiya car?

By budget I mean the ones that don't use standard spur gears a la TA02, TL01, M-Chassis, etc. How do the gears and rest of the drive train hold up? I'm getting a M04 chassis car and was considering getting a brushless system for it. I'm not doing it for the insane speed but more for efficiency (longer run times), and well the speed too I guess :p . I don't want it to be excessive though, I still want the power to be tractable/controllable and not insane. What system would you recommend?

I've put brushless motors in the TL01 and M03 chassis before. The driveline is able to handle the extra power with little or no problems. The gears and parts in those chassis designs are fairly robust. I've got no experience with the M04 chassis variant though...
The only thing that bugged me was that these designs leave the motor wide open, and easily scraped up.

Weeb! It's been a while although you probably don't remember me. How is Tiamat doing? Back on topic, hehe, I think it should be fine in the M04 if it was okay in the M03. What system were you using and how controllable was it?

I have a stock tl-01 with the exception of full ball bearings. The car is literally built like a tank. In terms of power handling, I would never use anything more than a novak ss5800 in sportsman mode.

And how does that hold up? I was thinking 'bout getting a TL-01B for kicks...:D

I have put a BL in my TB01R and F201.
Both have no problem.
So far my only problematic Tamiya car have been the Dirty Trasher TA01.
With a 600motor (brushed) and 10cell power ... I have melted many gears and broke the gearbox once ! One of the reason could also be that I'm using 130mm tires instead of stock 80mm tires.

PS: In general Tamiya are very strong cars ...

I have a TL01 and used to have a M03, the TL01 puts up with anything drivetrain wise, I've ran 8-9 wind mod motors and my "plasma pro" 5900kv 540 motor in it on 7 cells with no problems. Although you must have bearings fitted and ideally the light carbon shaft. My friend has one thats got every tamiya hopup fitted and that flies, on a good day it can produce laptimes close to that of my TC3. But the tamiya is a bit more durable, in 9 months his had it all thats happened is the lightweight chassis is starting to break from the amount of times its bounced off curbs/hit stuff and needed new bevel gears for the 4WD shaft because they finally worn out.
The M03 I put the same BL motor in, it was std except oil shocks, ball diff and bearings. It ran fine powersliding everywhere, the joys of a FWD :)

I have put both a lehner 4200 and the novak 5800 in my rising storm and it handled them fine. I do have full ball bearings, but that is the only hopup. Almost forgot, I tried my shadow in there too and it worked fine as well.

Thanks a lot for the input. I think I'll be going with the novak super sport plus with the 5800. It seems to be milder than all the other BL motors but it should still get hairy with rwd only on the M04 :D

I have a TL01B Baja Champ completely hopped up.
BL mtroniks plasma 4400. 6 or 7 cells. It weights less than 540 motor and the car is very fast and durable. No problem in driving.
If you go with TL01B buy some new good tyres and some chassis (10 USD!!!), the stock tyres are usefull only for 5 or 6 runs with BL systems.
Problems in 3 months with BL:
Broken carbon propeller shaft
2 chassis (stock and lightweight)
lost some screws

Hellgod, is that you? :)
Tiamat's doing well! Thanks for asking :) i made a site for it here: http://www.beanos.com/tiamat
Tiamat is in reference to my truck btw, a 6WD/6WS Clod Buster mutant with triple Hacker C50L/10t motors on board.
But me going back on topic too :)
I currently have an Aveox 1420 series motor- i think it was 3T, with a Schulze 18.61 ESC and it runs super-reliably. It's been converted to a 'pocket monster' truck with the TLT-1 tires.
I have also experimented with a Hacker B50S/8t on a M-03 mini cooper, with the same Schulze ESC and the thing was pretty much uncontrollable at the top end, but made for some really fun running especially on a twisty course.
But i'm sure you know this- you will want to protect the motor can with at least a lexan brushguard or something.
The Aveox on my TL-01 looks positively sandblasted at this point. Back to the drawing board....

I was feeling crazy yesterday, I put my hacker b50-s into my TT-01. I am running with a mgm 12012 controller and 10 4/5A cells (KAN 1050). I also ran it with 8 gp3300's (from my emaxx, but the weight makes handling weird). The motor fit in perfectally, just enough space. I'll post a pic when my g/f gives my camera back =). The thing is a rocket!!! I put the stock (useless) tires on it and they actually work well because the thing has so much power that if I do a burn out I can get them to start smoking!!!!! (and leave black marks on the pavement) I have no idea how fast it is going, but damn it goes fast (big empty parking lot).

with this much power, would a rear wheel or front wheel drive handle better on a track?

Nope! If anything, the rear or front wheel drive cars would break traction MUCH easier because all the power is sent to only two wheels as opposed to all 4. Plus that's 2 less wheels that can pull/push the car and 2 less wheels for better traction.

i know 4wd handles the best, but i want to get a m chasis car thats why i'm asking if a fwd or a rwd would handle better.

I misread your question, oops. In that case, I'd imagine RWD would fair better. But I guess it'd come down to track really.

I once put a Hacker C50 and 12 cells in a TL-01 because I wa bored. That was interesting to say the least, sure was fast though, and minus a spur gear or two, the entire(Stock) thing held up!

Some of the older M-chassis tamiya cars were convertiable from FWD to FWD. For example, the M01 and M02 were the same, you could make a FWD M01 into a RWD M02, just by rebuilding it.
I'm not sure if the M04 can be converted like that. I have a M01 FWD and I find it way more stable than a RWD M04 and M02. Maybe theres something wrong with my M04, but it is uncontrollable even with the stock silvercan motor. The FWD M01 is more stable at speed.
But the M01 will accelerate much slower due to traction limitations of FWD, but will brake much better.

I have received and built the M04, you can't make it Fwd without modification. Oh man, this car FUN to drive! I've only driven it inside on linoleum and it's handling seems very tractable and balanced. I can't wait to take it outside and see what it can do! I can get some nice drifts going and powerslides, although I don't think it'll be able to do that on pavement with it's sticky rear tires. The thing that gets me is how nicely balanced the car is. Only thing you'll have to do is add some weight opposite the motor to get it to hook up correctly under hard acceleration or else it goes the left. Again, that's on linoleum and not pavement.

I just got a M04 S2000 RWD I still need to build. I also got bearings and oil shocks for it, now I want a ball diff and should be ready to go. I also think I'm gonna get a 4200 or something for it soon, I dunno if the silver can will cut it after so many BLs. With the right motor/lipo combo this thing could be a lightweight rocket!

Thats exactly the problem I have with my M04, it pulls to one side during acceleration and then the other at speed. I just cannot get it to go straight. I haven't used it in over a year. I have the BMW m-roadster.

Yeah, try what I did, the chassis is naturally more heavy on the left side because of the motor. This makes the left tire have more traction and so the diff spins the right tire, providing thrust from the right side only. Once I added the cell to the right side it almost solved the problem, there is only a slight left hook on linoleum. On asphalt, it should go straight as an arrow. Bring that M-Roadster out of the closet man! It's beggin to be run!

i put the novak ss5800 in a monster beetle and well the bevel gears started to shed metal...
