View Full Version : How do I waterproof MGM/Schulze Controllers

I hate the shrink wrap design! To many open spaces. I took the shrink wrap off my MGM 12012 and it ran at room temp compared to pretty hot with the wrap on. This is a very poor design for cars and trucks especially off-road ones. It doesn't allow for proper cooling but still allows debris and moisture in!

I was wondering how I can waterproof it. Something like the sprayable foam that plumbers use around pipes in walls to spary in the openings on the shrink wrap, and placing a heat sink on top with the silicone that is used on the UF75. Let me know what you guys think.

best way (and cheapest) use the shrink wrap and then put silicon paste in both ends the paste is available in house building shops for real houses, only a few bucks, but way enough inside to fully insulate more than 100 escīs !!
(the other materials will not function that good as:
1. the material will not stay with the higher temp, silicon is temp resistant till 350° celsius
2. the other material will not be taken out (for service or programming) that easy, silicon stays in a single piece and could be easily taken out
3. silicon could be stucked to the escīs in/out spaces with your fingers or other helping goods, so it is easy to use

try it, the higher temp. will be there, but the debris not !!

Thanks, never thought of that before.

Another question...

What about cutting a hole in the shrink wrap and placing the silicone that is used on the UF75 and a heat sink? I have heard the name of the silicone but cant remember.

could be done, but the heatsink has to be glued with special heat transferring glue to the alu plate above the fets (never glue directly to the fets) and then everything could be "siliconed". there are several different types of silicon out there, it doesnīt matter wich one you use, get the one that is clear after hardening process, it allows you to see a little better through it than the full colored ones.

keep in mind: a area for the double sided tape should be left free, as the silicon will be destroyed if you try to loosen the esc for transferring it to another model !!
