Well I just ordered a HPI SuperNitro rally impreza, Futaba radio, fuel etc.
I also ordered, due to what I've read in this forum, A larger heatsink head, Slipper clutch, fibre disc brake for it.
I have ordered it from www.apexmodels.com, (http://www.apexmodels.com,) and it came to £427!. Thats soooo much money! Can anyone confirm if thats a rip off or not? I didn't get the price of each of the extra parts...
UK people calm my nerves for me!!!!!!!!!!

You have to remember that UK prices are always huge. (We English get ripped off for everything!)
The car alone was £279, which I expected. My calculations tell me the Fibredisc brake, slipperclutch and heatsink came to £85 ish. I have no idea if this the normal price...

Andrew - all due respect but you don't know what you're talking about. There may be higher import taxes sales taxes or any number of other expenses involved in importing HPI cars to the UK. Unless you've bought cars in the UK and have a feel for what a good price would be THERE, then you can't even begin to guess at a "good" price. Stop stirring the crap.

stirring the crap???
IMHO that wouldve been the very last thing id expect to hear you say.
besides dont go completely off on me, he didnt exactly give me much to go on. i dont normally look at the locations of people and i figured he was living there and didnt have to deal with importing taxes and all that stuff

Andrew, maybe you should start reading the full post instead of the first few lines. He does say "UK people calm my nerves for me".

Its only just occurred to me that most USA people visit this board... Am I the only "foreigner" here?
American friends - Don't move to the UK. EVERYTHING is massively overpriced!
When the Car is delivered on Tuesday, maybe I'll order future parts from the USA?

Toby UK, You should move to U.S.A. and everything could be affordable for you. :D

Let's put it this way... When I was in London in 98... Regular gasoline was about $6 USD a gallon... Can you imagine what a gallon of Trinity 30% would cost!!! :D

Toby - There are quite a few people registered here from the UK that could give you an opinion on this. I would suggest maybe including the fact that you would like and opinion from people in the UK, in the title of the thread.
Andrew, I don't mean to go off on you, but I don't want anyone to feel they've paid too much if in fact they haven't. It would make you feel real bad if you were told you got ripped off, wouldn't it? Even worse if it's not true. This is is a hobby that people enter with the expectation of a little fun and enjoyment. It's not good form to make anyone feel they've been ripped off. I think it starts them off on the wrong foot. The better way to handle it, in light of the fact the purchase has already been made, AND if you're familiar with the going price, is to tell them that you know of shops that sell stuff for less the next time they need to buy any RC related stuff.

Waith gas is more expensive over there because they do not use as much as we do here. We use much much more so we get a much much better price.
Also I'd like to know how much of that price is Taxes. Toby can you help us out on that one buddy.
Oh and Toby I'd like to say that, at least this American loves England. On September 10th I wouldn't have said that, I wouldn't have said I hate you but I wouldn't have said I loved your country either. But after seeing how much you guys care about us, not only do I have a whole new understanding of you. I am also ashamed for not giving England a fair shake before the attack. Thanks for being such loyal friends.

What does your total convert into in US dollars? I don't know the conversion rate, but here are some approximate prices in US dollars from California. Kit $260, Heat sink $45, Slipper Clutch $33, Fiber disk brake $14, Fuel (20%) $18 per gallon. What is the model number of your Futaba radio and servos? Did you get a glow plug igniter?

dalosiguy,
I have a real small hobby shop in my town.. and same thing. I have been in large debates with the owners why...friendly debates of course... It boils down to the distributer. If the smaller hobby shops dont mass order some of the products, they do not get a better buying price, therfore our price is higher. So what I do now, is look for products with good sugg. Mf. retail prices.. ie..Horizon Hobbies.. there set prices are low, therefore my hobby shop can sell them for the lower price. Like the JR x2 controller.. I brought it to there attention that Horizon Hobbies offers it up at 99.99.. the owners looked into it and now they sell carry it and sell if for 105.99 (5 bucks, for shipping) So, I try to get the goods I can for a good price and buy it from them, to help support them. Anything big though, I order on line because we are talking about a 100.00 savings or more

he paid 279 pounds for the kit, and the kit here is 279.99, so that sound about right just for the kit (no the 279 is NOT a typo)
1.00 US = 1.45 UK
if you ask me he didnt get ripped whatsoever.... :)

I almost use Tower Hobbies exclusively. Even the little things I save money on. A set of servo gears at Tower $4.29, my LHS $6.99. But Tower doesn't carry some manufacturers, but I always buy online.

Since the first posts, I've looked around the web for the prices of the parts I ordered. It turns out the heatsink head alone is £50! That accounts for the high price....
Iread that the head lets the engine stay cooler, meaning better performance.
Considering its costing me £50 I expect the car to do at least 20,000mph, at the very least!!!!!!!
I knew the car, and radio "deal" would come to £340 anyway. I just never realsied those few extra bits would be so expensive.
By the way I'm not TOTALLY new to R/C racing. I used to race a Schumacher Cougar, and A Tamiya Kingcab truck (remember them?). But that was about 10 years ago!
To now suddenly buy all this gear meant my previous knowledge of prices all those years ago is redundant...
About 80% of our fuel is tax. Petrol prices here are a complete joke.

Ya it always seems like i'm staring at the recipt (sp?) from my purchase at the LHS cuz it looks high then i start adding in the 10 little parts that cost $1, $3, $5, ect. It all adds up in the end. Stay coo

T3Terror,
yes, buying online can save you money, but if you ad the cost of S&H to the price of the product your buying it probably wouldn't be much cheaper than your LHS in the long run.
