I'm probably gonna sound like a newbie again, but here's what I'm lookin at. I'm buying a used Novak SS 5800 off a guy on this forum for my 4-tec. I know the diffs probably won't last long (my front one is already going) so that's why I'm doing the nitro 4-tec diff conversion once one blows.

My questions: what should I gear the novak system? I have a Chameleon 2 in there right now with the stock gearing...its a 28t pinion and I THINK an 84 tooth spur, or something like that. I read that the 5800 is equivilent to a 11 turn motor or something, so what do I gear it?

Also, when correctly geared, can I expect around 35mph? Yeah, the annoying "How fast will it go with this?" question, but I gotta ask :D

Any input is appretiated...thanks!

I can't help you on the gearing, you will just have to figure something out that makes the motor not get so hot that it thermals. It will push your 4tec to 35-40mph on 6 good cells.

Alright, thank you tcolesen. I'm sure my lhs could help me out with the gearing, but if any one on here knows that'd be great.

Do what tcoleson said. Once it gets freakishly hot, back it down a tooth or two and that should be good. The key is to find the "sweet spot". :D

In my touring cars (TC3, TC4, and some others) I usually geared around 7.5:1. The final drive of the 4-tec is 2.1:1 multiplied by the spur/pinion ratio. So the stock ratio is (84/28)*2.1 = 6.3 which is probably a little bit fast for the novak. A pinion around 23 or 24 teeth would be a better place to start. Novak recommends a 7.3:1 for a starting ratio which would be about a 24 tooth pinion.
