Are you using a damp sponge while soldering to keep your tip clean? If you tip is real dirty try a light grade sand paper on it then retin the tip.

I use a small tin of soldering flux and a wet towel after every session, dip the tip in the flux and wipe quickly with a damp towel. If its really bad, like LandSharkGT said use some emery cloth or sandpaper to clean and re-tin.

Hope This Helps

I have better luck with the sandpaper and I just do it regularly, that way tip I'm using is always pretty clean.

Dont sand too much as this will ruin a tip just as fast! Flux and damp cloth or sponge works wonders and keeping your tip tinned is great!

One of the best things to use is brass wool (I think it's brass). I've seen it on some sites where they sell soldering supplies. It's nice because it boes a good job removing crud from the tip but doesn't cool it off like the damp sponge does. Like the others have said, flux and keeping the tip tinned also work wonders.

Brillo pads work well too! Green scrunge pads
