So much for enough for the night!!

Time for some masks!

I wondered long about the design, I had no idea how to approach it, so I improvised and heres how it went..

First a template for bonnet and back decal.. made from masking tape 4 bits thick so i had matching templates.

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/mask1.JPG

It seemed to work ok.

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/mask2.JPG http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/mask3.JPG

The sides were to prove trickier as a mirror image was needed, i done it by making the template below, using 1 half for 1 side, then turning the other half over and cutting a new template from that.

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/mask3.5.JPG http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/mask4.JPG

Went on to mask the other bits I want yellow.

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/mask5.JPG

And the easiest part... the window masks

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/mask6.JPG

Now i can get on with spraying my mettallic blue tomorow :D

I'm off to do a couple of coats of my blue before dinner..will post some pics shortly.

Incase u were wondering Im in Scotland, thats why I'm eating while u all sleep and sleeping while u all post here :)

Looks awesome so far, for a newbie you've done well. Looks like you've picked up a few tips and tricks here and there. Your post should serve great inspiration to other newbies to take the plunge and join in.
It really isn't that tough is it?

Not till now, Ive sprayed 3 coats of blue on, and it looks like its bleeding into the masks!!! Hopefully its in the tape and not on the lexan! Dunno where i went wrong, maybe the tape isnt up to it, maybe i put too much paint at once. Anyways still pics to come.

3M makes a really good painters tape. If you do find out you were bleeding into the tape, next time try some of the 3M stuff. I haven't used it before but I heard it works really well.

Divman

Yea the trouble is a combo of the tape itself not being up to it, but the worst was where i myself havent sealed it properly, like the moulding on doors and that kinda place, i managed to get the worst off with a hobby knife blade, and i think some well placed stickers and it will be looking ok.

Oh and i will be looking for window tints, since i made a mess of the windscreen mask

hey if u had some bleed threws, this what i suggest u do.take some brake fluid on a q tip n run on the areas where u bled threw (once u removed the masks. use the q tip like a eraser on a pencil,u will notice it will start to smear like its removong it, then i would go over your "smuged with a dry q tip to soak up the removerd brake fliud, then with a damp paper towel(not toooo wet) with a little liquad soap on it, i would wipe the ares lightey where u removed the paint n them wipe again with a just damp paper towel n finally dry with a dry paper towel. just when u r done make sure u got up everything u wanted removed ok! i ust this step everytime i have a mess up! hope this helps ya!

Thanks Fester... but I'm done now :)

I had the same thought about maybe some nitro, i wasnt sure tho and i didnt really want to make things worse, the shell is basically going to be bashed to pieces anyhow, and I've learned enough to make a decent job of a cruisin' shell now (he says hopefully!)

Heres the pics... u may all point and laff and call me n00b painter now :)

1st some blue:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/paint1.JPG

Removed the mask to survey the damage!
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/paint2.JPG

Throw some yellow on:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/paint3.JPG

Some more damage assesment:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/paint4.JPG

When i removed the film I was well chuffed with the blue at least nice metallic!
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/paint5.JPG

Time for some "tactical stickering":
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/paint6.JPG

On the truck it actually looked ok to the naked eye!
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~divman/misc/paint7.JPG

Summing up, for my 1st attempt and going in blind, I think i done OK, tbh I'm happier with what I learned along the way, than the actual finished job. But I reckon i can get funky with the next one, which Mastercard permitting shud be on a screen near u soon.

Thx for the tips & encouragement guys

Dave

That looks good for your first try. As you paint more bodies, the better they get. Can't wait to see your next body. Good job on the walkthrough as well.

No pointing and laughing here. These boards have grown and acquired some mature and respectful painters. The only thing you'll get here is constructive criticism and tips for your next more successful paint job.

Your color choice and scheme work very well together and it does look good mounted on the MT. However, you already know where you went wrong.
Remember to use 3M tape. Any of it will work, but many like the blue painters tape for its light adhesion. What is important more then anything is to make sure you seal the edges really well. Burnish the edges with either your thumb nail or the edge of a credit card or drivers licence. When spraying your first coat, spray the edges of your mask lightly and cover the rest. You can build up your color with more coats.

Aside from the bleeds I don't really see anything else wrong. Chalk it up to experience and do it again. Don't be afraid of doing the same scheme again until your satisfied.

Looking at a crowd pleazer on ebay $25 (£14) i guess it will depend on the postage...altho i do still fancy another crack at the chevy 1st

are u gonna try to airbrush?

Divman
09-23-2005, 04:06 AM
My brother has an airbrush, but I think i'm just gonne use aerosols again...

Gonne be about 2 weeks until i get my shell and vinyl as i bought from US! and of course i found both available in UK about 5 seconds after i had paid for them!

FESTER2004

cool, but i hope maybe 1 day u will try to airbrush.i only got into airbrushn after my brother in law gave me his set up for free.i always wanted to do it but didnt have the funds for a a/b setup-so i kinda of lucked out. the only thing i had to buy was $3 bucks in brass fititngs n a $20 airbrush, the one i had fell apart.the whole set up was rigged up until i goit the new a/b n i straightend everything out ,so far so good!ask your brother if u could try his?

Divman

hey, for your first spray that looks sweet!
i remember the first spray i did, i tried to make it all too complicated and totally screwed it up. i really wanna get a compressor and get away from rattle cans now too cos spraying the perfect shell seems to be my numero uno goal at the moment lol

the only thing ill say is that, like mine, your yellow looks kinda mustardy? I wonder if its our dodgy English paint suppliers ;)

get another shell, get some 3M and have another go ;)

c0s

Divman
09-29-2005, 11:34 AM
the mustardy stuff comes from the pics i think, it is a lot brighter in the flesh..

My new shell is en route, as is 2x A4 sheets of vinyl paint mask :) so no need for 3M \o/

As for the design/colours, I'm not sure, its a crowd pleazer shell im getting, so i dunno if the same style is gonne suit that, I'll most likely go for different colours..but i dont wanne do the "normal" flames or something, might try something like tiger stripes but with red and silver rather than the orange and black. And if im gonne airbrush it, it may even risk a 3rd colour O_o.

All suggestions very welcome :)

all i do is go on google image search, or look around any rc gallery sections and save as many pics as possible for reference..i have hundreds of pics and i can just use a bit of detail from one, and a bit of detail from another etc...

Looks good for a first try!

It is amazing to see you looked thouroughly and found it costs about $50 to paint one yourself counting all the needed materials........That's one of the things that makes painters like to hear, "$45.00 includes the body right?".....haha, ;)......Jim, jconcepts.net
