rock crawling on a budget? get the nylint 1/18th scale crawler from wally-world. i finally decided to get one out of curiosity, they are a blast when only a small area is available. thing climbs like crazy. on rainy days i throw the pillows off of the couch on the floor and do a little living room crawling. :D

Stock the TLT will not climb well but I have put 150.00 into mine to stretch it and give it clearance. It climbs just as well as any other Clod that I have.

Also if you want something that is good at climbing out of the box, check out the PTI truck. That thing is awsome out of the box.

i spent 45.00 for mine at wal-mart ready to run. battery gives about 25 minutes of crawl time. the gear boxes have 2 speeds, and it works pretty well for a 45 dollar truck.

the 1/6th scale radio has all kinds of stuff on it, but the 1/18th is no frills. no adjustments or anything. just the on/off switch, steering wheel and trigger. it does the job though. heck, who needs all the adjustments when you are out climbing a pile of rocks?

TLT's do suck in stock form, but built properly...well...let's see a Wal-Mart crawler do this.

is there a kit to make a tlt into a crawler for around $150??
i think i might get one for a project to do over the winter but im not sure if i can afford it

The PRP chassis is $170. You'd need electronics, TLT axles, and most of the parts of the Stampede transmission to get it going. It rocks though. That's what I run.
Here's (http://www.teamprpracing.com/tlt.html) the link. Check 'em out. I've been very, very happy with my chassis.

I have a metals class second semester at my high school. I already have a speed control a couple of torquey motors and servos and would have all the metal that I would need. My question is what would be the cheapest way to get the center, front and rear diffs as well as wheels and tires?? I would want this thing to perform fairly well yet be pretty cheap. I would also need shocks...

well winter is coming and cant really use none of my cars expect for mini t. i need a project over the winter. im tinking of building a custom crawler. what are some popular axles. i see on rccrwaler alot of people use tlt axles where can i find some

u should use some clodbuster axles. u can find them and other clod parts on ebay all the time. clods are fun to build and look cool. im in the process of building my own right now my truck is basically done all i need is 2 motors, esc and 2 battery packs ive been workin on it since june of this year workin out all of the bugs and making stuff fit right so prepare to spend some time and money on your project. but have fun and good luck. if you have any more questions dont be afraid to ask

By the way.. IMO clod axles are the easy way out.. Shaftys are the real world crawlers... Sorry if that offends some of you.. :)
I respect your opinion but here's my observations:
Advantages of the Clod axles:
two independent drive systems
no driveshafts to the axles
no driveshaft induced axle torque
no limit to how long/short you want to make the wheelbase
no limit to how many driven axles you want to add
many chassis choices out there from sedate to extreme
lower center of gravity
Disadvantages of the Clod axles:
not as realistic as a Jug/TXT-based system
more complex to wire up
limited gearing options
Advantages of the Jug/TXT:
more gearing options
more realistic
easier to wire up
Disadvantages of the Jug/TXT:
axle torque
the driveline will limit the wheelbase you want
going for more than two driven axles means trying to figure out how to get power to them
most chassis look the same
higher center of gravity (the gearbox is right where you would want to mount your batteries)
For me, I'll take a mod-Clod over a TXT-1 any day. That reminds me that I need to work on getting my Clod running. Right now it's just a pair of axles.

PCC.. I to respect your oppinion, but mine is different than yours.. I do know that the clod axle rigs will be more capable and easyer built than a shafty.. I know that.. I personally like the realisticness of a shafty and the challenge of figuring it all out. I didnt mean to start this kind of debate about the clod vs. shaft crawlers.. If I was trying to win a comp, I would use clod axles.. theres just no way around the fact that the design of them makes possibilities endless....
I agree with you on the realism thing. I'm thinking of stretching my TLT-1 and making a scale crawler out of it but I like the size of it do I'm not sure. Then again, I could buy my brother's TLT and mod that one, too.

Yea I have a TLT also.. I am in the middle of making a scaler out of it. I am going true to scale and using leaf springs (trying to replicate the bruser).. Also I have tried to find a 2nd generation Toyota body with no luck.. So I am making my own for this project..!
