If you go on the "Park and Backyard" forum, you will find several Threads that might be helpfull to you. I only started flying this past April. At the time, I decided that I wanted to spend most of my time flying, rather than building and re-building (after the inevitable crash). I choose to go with a simple electric RTF because of the low initial cost and the availability of replacement parts. I bought a Firebird Commander (Hobby Zone) and went through two main wings, two props and one tail before getting good enough to move on. We have approximately twenty flyers at the local park, and more than half of them started with the Firebird Commander. Let us know what you select, or if you need any further advise.
