The KO Propo Vantage Esprit II is a top quality stick radio used by Masami Hirosaka (world champion driver.) He made the stick radio popular, but people don't realize that he's also a champion helicopter flyer so he was already used to stick radios.
Personally I think a wheel radio is best for driving cars.

There's also the Hitec Eclipse Pro Car which is basically a stick version of the CRX. Unfortunately it only seems to be available in europe though. I gotta say, I prefer stick transmitters...better finger control, IMO.

the pistol style radios owe their roots to slot cars. Triggers on slot car controllers are how they are controlled. Add a dial steering wheel and you have our r/c tx systems. R/C does owe a lot to slot cars which owe a lot to model trains. Its all related :D
With that said if you are looking on the internet look at boat sites too. Same channels (27, 75mhz). Boat modelers often use stick radios in their hobby and they are the same radios that cars use. you should NOT use an aircraft system for surface radios. It may actually be ILLEGAL.

I have been using stick controllers all my life and i find my self in a bit of a dilema as all the new dsm controllers are in pistol format which i dont like much at all.
The problem i have with gun controllers is braking and having to push back with your index finger to brake. This makes is much harder to control the amount of brake than on stick controllers.
However in one of my favorite bashing places i have been getting loads of interferance problems and glitching I am therefore begining to think that having to relearn a controller format after 16years may be worth while just to eliminate glitching.
Does anyone else know of any dsm stick systems being made for surface rc?

is there a module based stick radio? If there is, you can get dsm modules.

Due to disability, I use an Airtronics 'Super EXZES', which is a stick version of the M8. You can change the module from 27Mhz to 75Mhz. Purchased new for $259. couple years ago.

From their website
With the growing popularity of two-stick radios, Airtronics offers the Super EXZES computer radio with all the software from our award winning M8 pistol grip radio with the exception of (ALB) braking. The Super EXZES features include 10 model memory, EPA, Dual Rate, Servo Reverse, Steering and Throttle Expo and much much more. The Super EXZES comes with a Transmitter Battery Holder, Switch Harness, DSC Cord, RX-311 part number 92837 3 Channel Receiver and is available on 27Mhz only.

Okay, I called Airtronics and the tech guy wasn't sure. But put me in touch with an owner of an EXZES, who had installed one (Spectrum DSM). I spoke with the guy.
Yes, just a simple swap of modules.

Another controller thats claimed to be compatible with the spektrum modules is the
Hitec Eclipse Pro Car.
Its claimed on here
http://dcracing.co.uk/dcrshop/product_info.php?cPath=57_60&products_id=477
This for me is very good im trying to get a deal with just the controller and spektrum from another retailer ill try with dcracing as well.
The problem with the sanwa for me is getting the module for it as the only modules advertised online in the uk are the futaba/hitec and the ko ones.

That Hitec radio looks pretty trick. I like the position of the screen, easier to read.
