i am looking for an electric kit modled after the cessna (trainer like) with a wingspan around 35 inches. im getting back into rc airplanes with previous experience in nitro 40 size, years ago. i want something a little smaller and also wanted to try electric flight. it has to be a kit though because half the fun is building. also any suggestions on the whole drive system would help because i have never worked with electric motors.

thanks

I recently got myself the UltraFly Cessna 182 kit. It goes together really nicely and flys just fantastic. The kit also comes with two wings, (trainer and sport) so beginners can start off with the trainer wing and progress to the sport wing. Both wings have ailerons and flaps ready to be cut from the wing, ie if your a beginner and don't want to use aileron just leave them attached to the wing. I install just flaps for my first flights and have just switched over to ailerons. The wing span is around 40 inches I think on a 400 motor. The kit recommends a 9.6v battery but I have found that with an 11.1 LiPo she flies a hell of a lot better, doesn't seem to drag its ass and putters around at under half throttle with a 10x4.7 APC prop. The planes speed with flaps is so slow on landing you could almost walk faster. Great for getting back into it and once your back into the groove change the wing and put an 8x8 APC on and you now have a sport trainer. The only problem I had with the model is the undercarriage is a little weak and the wheels are a bit cheap looking, so I strengthened the u/c and fit better bush bashing wheels.

thanks for the info. what exactly did you do to the undercarrage?

The kit comes with two options..
1. Tricycle
2. Tail Gragger

I set it up as a tail dragger as I think it looks better, thats just me... Anyway the main u/c is just a peice of 1/32" wire which press fits into the battery cavity cover which is plastic. On my first landing into freshly cut grass the force of the grass and probably my crap landing deflected the wire backwards and snapped the cavity cover. I glued it back on successfully and went to the local hobby shop and brought some more wire to strengthen the existing design. What I did was attached the second wire to the engine bulkhead using small clamps and screws. The wire then protrudes from the rear and bottom of the engine cowl and comes rearward and down toward the existing wire. The attachment point is halfway between the wheel point and the body point of the existing u/c, the new wire then changes direction and runs parallel with the existing wire. I then wrapped the parallel section with cloth tape and expoxied the join, both sides obviously. This setup still allows the u/c to function in an up and down motion but retains the for and rear motion. To date I have had some pretty hard landings and some pretty impressive bounces with absolutely no damage to the u/c or attaching parts. I hope this makes sense. I can draw you a diagram if you wish....

Also the wheels that come with the model are crap pressed rubber. Go and get some bigger real wheels from the store. It funtions a whole lot better and looks more scale/real.

Cheers
