Hi everyone, I just started to get into planes a little while ago although I've been into Hobby cars/trucks for about 8 years. I've got a few questions for you veterans before I go plunk down my hard earned money on a new plane. I don't have tons of flight experience but I learn really fast, and have logged quite a few hours on simulators and such. I'm looking to get into some 3d aerobatics as you may have guessed by the fact that I've posted this in the Aerobatics forum. I have recently been looking at FlatOuts, or foamies. Correct me if my terminology is incorrect, as I'm still new to this branch of RC. I've been told that they are hard to fly, but I'm tempted to try anyways. I was also told that brushless was practically a must for this type of aircraft. So thus far, I've been looking at the combos on Tower Hobbies site, and like the combo for the FlatOuts plane with the brushless motor and ESC, I furthermore am looking at a Futaba 6 CH PCM radio, because I already know I like flying, and will use it. However, what I don't know is, are these planes any good, are they really so hard to fly that I don't have a chance, or what? Again, I'm new to the hobby so whatever info you can give me I'm greatful for. What are your reccomendations? So far I've only flown a Firebird II, yes I know it's only a 2 channel plane which operates way differently from a foamie, but I honestly think I can handle it, I could be wrong, who knows. My other main question is if you crash one of these things how much damage will the gear take? Thanks in advance, I know everyone hates these types of questions as far as cars/trucks goes.

Ohh one other question I forgot about. I see that the radios all are seperated between heli's and planes, whats the difference? I'm interested in helis too, can I use a radio with both?

you may want to buy a 3-4 channel plane before you start with 3d because if you have no "real" flight experience you may crash it and destroy it. The simulator helps but as always, its harder to do in real life than on a simulator.

I flew a typhoon 3d a few days ago, I find it easy and fun to fly but I don't think somebody whose never "flown" a 3-4ch. plane would. Don't worry it doesn't take that long to learn. Im 13 and it only took me a few months of flying my delta dragon 3ch. (awesome trainer, very fast) to master it. After you have mastered a 3ch. and spend some time on the sim you shouldn't
have a problem flying

good luck :)

I figured I'd get the plane, and master it first, then try 3d, I wasn't saying I was going to straight up start 3d. I know what your saying though. My LHS reccomended an intermediary plane as well. I may do that, as I will use the same radio gear in both planes, and the foamie types only cost like 40 bucks anyway, the plane they recomended was about 80 as recall, which isn't too bad. Thanks for the response.

I see your original post was from 2 years ago. Did you ever get a plane?
