where's a good place to get screws? i was looking for stainless steel metric hex screws and "rc screwz" seems to have a good selection. has anyone had any experience with these? or are all screws are screws?

all screws are not equal, stainless are soft and tend to strip. I use screws from www.smfstore.com They are grade 10.9-12.9(Not exactly sure) steel.

Stainless steel is junk metal and has no business in any kind of car.

Mcmasters is great if you want to buy in bulk. TONY'S SCREWS (https://www.tonysscrews.com/categoryNavigationDocument.hg?welcome=1&productStyle=Style1&layout=reflections&categoryStyle=Style1) are made of the highest quality black oxide alloy steel (grade 12.9 metric & grade 8 standard). Today's R/C vehicles demand the strongest materials on the market. Stainless steel screws look nice and resist rust, but they just can't withstand the abuse we are putting on them. No one wants a DNF (did not finish) because they broke a cheap screw. Nor do they want to replace their screws every time they take apart their car because the screw heads strip. Tony offers complet kits for a variety of vehicles, and indidvidual packs of hardware.

wow this is great information, i always thought screws were screws, but i guess not. so is grade 12.9 the best grade? the higher the number, the better the grade? or is 12.9 the highest?

The short answer is yes.
At McMasters (http://www.mcmaster.com/param/asp/PSearch2.asp?reqTyp=parametric&act=psearch&FAM=scs&FT_210=50897&FT_137=7106&session=desc=Cap%20Screws;scs;210=50897;137=7106&sesnextrep=530111625548960&ScreenWidth=1280&McMMainWidth=1058) you can check out the material/ finish/ class material chart for a good reference. Additionaly, if you are replacing screws, do your best to use standard / caphead screws whenever clearance will permit. You will find that with the deeper hex, your hex driver will get a better grip and the screws and your tools will last longer and not strip as much. In the unlikely event that you do strip the head the caphead also gives you more material to grab with pliers or to cut a slot in with your dremmel. Button head is the next step down, with flat heads only being used when absolutely required. Keep in mind metal to metal connections require blue loctite.

what car do you have?

I picked up a GET SCREWED kit for my HB Lighting 2 Pro. He doesn't have many kits out but he has a bunch for the more popular R/C's. HB Lightning Series, Traxxas Revo (T-maxx and N. Rustler coming soon), HPI Savage and others.

The thing I like the most about this kit is that it comes in a nice plastic case with each spot labeled to show the size of the screw. Its VERY helpful when you dont know which screw to use. Plus, its right around the same price as all other kits and even a bit cheaper than Tony's Screws.

I thought about taking him in to where you did, Tim. Then I thought he might miss all the other goodies on the site. Lots of goodies to look at. I always end up buying a lot more than I planned to.

EXACTLY

For $100, I bought enough screws to last me for a LIFETIME for any 1/10th buggy/truck I ever buy.

Extremely fast shipping, too.

The best "retail r/c" screw site is http://www.hexcrews.com/. You will want to read their article on strength at http://www.hexcrews.com/HexcrewsNews.html .

so can you safely assume that black screws are the "black oxide alloy steel" screws or is that some sort of a standard? if not, how can you tell you got the good stuff, by the packaging?

NO. Black oxide is the finish on the screw. The class / grade is a standard, the strength of the material. I would be concerned if a product does not tell you what grade there screws are.

I asked the guys at Hexcrews about their grade and this was the reply.

Hi Tim,
We sell socket cap and flat head screws that are grade 12.9. The HexHeads A.P. screws, our newest item, are the same and have an added armor plate. Let everyone know to check them out at www.hexcrews.com. Thanks for question and your support on the forum. Take care.
