I'm probably going to make a trip to the hobby store tomorrow, and want to pick up a pair of tires for my S-maxx. First off, I want them to be for the snow. Since I only have 2wd at the moment, I'm going to get the most aggressive tread for snow driving, then turn them into ice tires as well.
First thing I need...what tires should I look at for the snow part? Big joes, mashers, etc? Not paddles, because those wouldn't work to well for the ice part...
Second thing I need, is what should I use for spikes in the tires? Screws, tacks, nails, staples? I think screws would be the best choice if I just put them from the inside out. Thanks guys!

For tires, go with something that won't pack with snow. Like a chevron or something similar.
For the studs, take some ½" snowmobile studs and attach a few to each tire. Should have endless traction with deadly possibilities. :D I think I have a box or two kicking around, I should give it a try.
If you do use screws inside the tires, go for some of the thicker ones so they don't bust off easily. Also back them with a washer for better prevention of them flying out.
I am thinking about putting some shoe tacks inside the tires. They should just penetrate the thickest part of the tire and they should never fly out. Best thing is, is that they will only be sticking out about a sixteenth of an inch so it won't be riding on metal all the time putting pressure on the nails. Some long industrial staples would also work as long as they don't stick out too far.

That is a good idea QLG. They wouldn't tear out or be "AS" dangerous as screws. I might try that one!

You could use those spikes you would buy for a braclet or something, you know the ones that you would buy at a Hot Topic type of store. You can screw them right in, add a little thread lock and they come in different sizes too.

i think ur best bet would be 1/4" bolts at 3/4" long.... screw a nut on... grind a point into the tip.. unthread the nut (to clean the threads) and put them through.... they will be stong... small enough (cu its a maxx) and probably work... just an idea?

I have used small deck screws for my GT, and they did come flying out. I was in the driveway, and I started hearing, ping, ping. I did'nt know what it was at first, then I realized it was the screws shooting out of my tires hitting the garage door. When they stay in the tires, they do get very good traction though.

if you have a local motocross shop, they might have golden colored tire spikes for ice racing. they are available in sizes (with a 1/4" spike, but they are screws) in 1/2 inch lengths. they work AWESOME. I could EASILY do wheelies with my stampede last year with them in. they come in packages of 100(?). i'll try to get you the name of the maker of the spikes. they are kindof pricey, but are 100% worth if for ice driving...

last year i made some snowchains for my savage and i was very impressed with the results. i have herd people say that chains are crap and interfear with the suspension, but if you take your time when you make them, and you should be pleased with them. tons of traction, and they looked badass

when i used to ice race we used street tires with 30-40 1/2 inch drywall screws with washers poked through. THen we'd do about 3 or 4 layers of duct tape on the inside over the screw heads, so they'd never pull out.

take a little nail(about 100 to a tire) and use cheveron tires and put them through the tred about 5 to each //\\ tred pattern.
Then take a dremel and grind down the point(if you want make a spike then do that) and let tem stick out about 3millimeters or less, and the ductape them to the inseide and they will work Awsome
