Best Paint Competition - November 2005
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!! (things have changed again)
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of November and will close at Midnight (EST) on Wednesday, November 30, 2005.
Theme: Video Game/Movie inspired paint! The goal of this month is to paint bodies that were inspired by video games and/or movies. This includes replicas of Gran Turismo cars, Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine, or multitudes of Fast and Furious paint schemes.
Restrictions: None. Any body or paint scheme can be entered. However, paint schemes that fall within this month’s theme will receive an extra 3 points. Only those that meet the theme are eligible for these bonus points.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the cars chances of winning. Please limit your entries to 3 photos per car. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention for the People Choice.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None. (see above for details).
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Must include a minimum of 3 photos per entry.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Winners from October’s Best Paint Competition will judge this month.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest. You will not judge photography skills but may penalize entries with photos that lack clarity and detail (only).
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Next months Best Paint Competition will have no restrictions or themes.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Divman, glad to see you got it finished. Looks great!!
To all, in case you haven't fully read the rules, any paint job can be entered this month. If your paint job falls within this month's theme, you'll get 3 extra points. If it does fall within the theme, please post the inspiration for your paint job to make it easier on the judges.
Let's see what you got!!

Alright guys, I'll throw my hat in the ring. While these are not my most detailed work, and may score low on the difficulty scale, I thought it was a heck of a coincindence that the theme this month was video games/television. One of my favorite clients had just asked me to copy two cars from his son's favorite video game, Need For Speed Underground 2! So I thought I'd join in for fun :)
Bodies: HPI Eclipse and HPI Saleen Mustang, both 190mm.
Paints: Pactra Acryl, Parma Faskolor and Createx Pearls & Opaques.
Masks: Hand cut (yes, freehanded the angry eyes :) ) from liquid mask

Here she is, my Associated T4 General Lee
All masks were hand designed and cut. The "01" and flag are completely paint. The only decals are the headlights/team associated sticker/ and the words General Lee, which were done on a label maker at work.
Paints used were All Spazstix: hard annodized orange, hard anno candy red, hard anno blue, black, and of course chrome. The flag, "01", and windows are chrome trimmed, not white. Was done about 2 months ago ready for our electric offroad state titles.
Entering the amateur class, as I have only painted 4 or 5 bodies for the T4 in the last couple of years. It has not been entered in any competition before. Sure did get some admiration at the track though.

Thanks Fester, yes I did take the photos too. Photography is my other hobby, so after racing was done for the day, I had one of the better drivers run my truck for a couple of laps so I could snap some shots of it in action.
I take pics at all our local RC events, recently the offroad EP states, EP onroad nats, and GP onroad nats.
Loads of galleries of pics here (http://www.teamadrenaline.net/e107_plugins/coppermine_menu/index.php?cat=10080). Including a few more of the general, regretably including being upside down :(

Piggy, There is no detail to show. What you see is it. I just threw it in here for laughs. I'm not happy with the paint job at all. I was serious about being inspired by anger and the dark side. This is a 15 minute paintjob done while I was in a PO mood.

Fes, you're getting better, but it looks like your brush might be due for a good cleaning. Since you spray outside, you may want to keep your paints in a bowl of warm water to keep them flowing better.
Great design and something that'll definitely get some good attention on the track.

Yeah :p I saw that body in a Pro-line ad and thought it was the coolest paint scheme I'd ever seen, so I decided to challenge myself to do it! I couldn't see the roof or hood though so I had to come up with my own design for that, some of which turned out pretty good, some of which didn't turn out so well, which is ok though since I'm going to be doing 2 more bodies in that same style. I can make the adjustments on those ones.

Just gettin this in before the deadline :D Just to see how I do.
Body and chassis manufacturer and size: Proline Mazda 6 200mm
Paint used: Pactra - Metallic Black, Metallic Blue, Sprint White
Masks used (hand or precut): Hand cut
Class entered: Beginner
This is my fifth body, and the first time trying flames or fade (I think it came out pretty good :)) The first coat was a bleed fest, I think I sprayed too much. I cleaned most of it up with Goo Gone and q-tips :D worked awesome.

Hey buggy, what are you using as a mask? Liquid, Masking (white or blue) or freehand?
I used 3M regular (tan colored) masking tape. I did 2-3 layers over laping eachother and I thought that would be good enough to not bleed, but I guess not. I had to paint it in the dark and I couldn't see very well because the night came so fast! I used a hobby knife to cut out the flames and the out lines.

12-02-2005, 06:53 AM
I got caught out on masking with tape too, i put 2 layers over lapping and it too was a bleed-fest i dunno if putting the extra layer actually encourages the paint to collect at the edges and bleed in. I also put too much paint and I guess that didnt help.. I went and bought vinyl masking sheets, but I've also used tape again since, and i stuck to 1 layer, and my first 2 or 3 coats were ultra light.

This months contest theme is meant to be Video Game/Movie inspired paint right?
Or am I thinking of another forum?
Yep thats the theme intended for this month. There is 3 bonus points awarded if the theme is designed into the paint job. There are submissions that don't apply the theme so they won't get the 3 bonus points when being judged.

The story of my life :)
Alright I have completed my judging of the Amature class for November. The bonus points in this competition were for video game theme paintjobs. Counting backwards.........
10th_GeoRacer. The picture you provided was extremely small and hard to judge so I did my best to determine what your design was. It seems as though the color contrast between the green and the black would be nice.
Design: 2
Execution: 2
Difficulty: 2
Bonus Points: 3
Total: 9
9th_Fester2004. I liked the color contrast between the yellow and the blue with the fade of orange/red. I had to take off points for the large almost stipple affect of your fade color. I think others have commented on cleaning your brush. That will help a lot. Try masking off your lettering. It looked like it was freehanded. One tip from me would be to practice on clear sheets of acetate that you can pick up at any office store. I usually practice on these sheets until I get the right affect. It is cheaper than praciticing on the actual bodies and running the risk of ruining them.
Design: 4
Execution: 4
Difficulty: 5
Bonus: 0
Total: 13
8th_Ceasarjjc. Nicely done design. The chrome paint would be striking outside. The pics were pretty small and it would have helped to show a side view. From what I could see, the design was simple and effective.
Design: 3
Execution: 5
Difficulty: 4
Bonus: 0
Total: 12
7th_SerpentBruc. The fact that you did custom made masks was very nice. The pinstriping was a good touch to frame the tribal flames. You could experiment with drop shadows to give the paintjob more depth or even add another overlapping flame pattern. I think you're ready to take your difficulty up a notch.
Design: 6
Execution 4
Difficulty: 4
Bonus: 0
Total : 14
6th_ Fester2004. Wow the General Lee sure is a hot car this month. But on a VW Beetle. Who would a thunk it......The body color could have been color matched to the decal a little better. Try experimenting with mixing up some custom paint. You'd be surprised at how easy and effective custom colors can be to tweak a design. The bonus points really helped the design move up in the standings. Nice Job!
Design: 6
Execution: 3

Bonus: 3
Total: 15
5th_Buggyracer28. Extremely striking design! The contrast between the hard lines and the flames is really nice and enhances the style. Two things to work on in the execution department..... your masking and your fades. Try using liquid mask. It really cuts down on the bleeds. Use Bob Dively's brand and I bet once you try it you'll never go back to tape again. Your spray pattern seemed a little too big at the fade. Experiment with air pressure and paint thinning a bit to perfect the paint flow. Great choice of colors.
Design: 7
Execution: 4
Difficulty: 8
Bonus: 0
Total: 19
4th_VelvetFogg. Very clean design. The fade in your flames is really nice and smooth. You seem to have the carbon fiber technique down pat. Looks good. You may want to try using a pinstripe or drop shadows to make your tribal or flames pop out more. They appear to be flat without any shadows. Keep up the good work.

3rd_Divman. I just love the colors. They work awesomely together. Your lines are really straight and clean with only a few bleads or underspray marks. Simple designs with great paint color choices are sometimes the most effective schemes created. I would have opted for vinyl numbers rather than handwriting them on because they are not symetrical. The fact that the 8's don't look the same took off an execution point. I'd love to see this one out on the track!
Design: 8
Execution:8
Difficulty: 8
Bonus: 3
Total: 27
2nd_Canison. Beautiful just Beautiful! The color is perfect and one of my personal favorites. I'm sure it got some admiration at the track like you mentioned. You really pulled off the classic General Lee scheme. The flag and the '01' look clean with straight, consistent lines with little or no errors that I could make out. Bo and Luke's ride has nothin' on you!
Design: 9
Execution: 9

And Finally the moment we've all been waiting for...........Your Winner......
1st_reynolds716. This is a paint job that makes me want to play video games......or wait drive my rc truck. Either way this is a very nice design that pushed the limits of all of the judging catagories. The design is difficult yet it was executed very nicely. The image on the front looks good and with the orange background and ripping metal it really comes to life. Using a slightly lighter green for the flames than the body is a really nice look and with the outline pops off of the body. Your drop shadows are consistent and very well done and help to give the paint job depth. Adding the phantom skulls in the roof was a nice touch that added difficulty points. You could work on making your lines a little straighter like on the window trim and some areas of the flames look a little edgy rather than flowing. Overall this design is a winner all around.
Well, there you have it. The results for the November paint contest. Everyone did an excellent job and I was glad to see that the amature entries outnumbered the pro class. You should all be proud of the fact that you are taking your hobby to the next level and not settling for standard 'stock' body designs. Keep up the good work!!!!!!
reynolds716 congrats on the win. You did a nice job. I am handing off the judging responsibility to you for next month. After my hand heals from all of this typing, I'm gonna start on the submission for the December

RESULTS Finally!!!
misho Mazda-18 points Yellow Mazda 6. The Tribal/scallop looks seem to be the trend now. This is no exception. I would have wanted to see cleaner white highlights
behind the scallops over the carbon fibre scallops as well as the orange window trim to be more pronounced making it look like it fades away into the basecoat. Lastly, I also liked the black shadow under the pinstriped CF effect, but the shadow was too thick for my liking. A complimentary shadow such as a violet would have made for a cleaner transition. Too much black fade over a yellow contaminates the yellow and results in making it look "dirty".
1) Design: 5

3) Difficulty: 7
4) Bonus 0
total 18
6th Place
Chub Stang-23 Themed Mustang. Very Simple design, not quiet easy to execute. Although the body type is an older model, it is a good replica nonetheless. I would have scored higher if there were a black pinstripe about the checkers as in the game.
1) Design: 5
2) Execution 9
3) Difficulty: 6
4) Bonus 3
total 23
5th Place
silva serpent-27points Themed Tazmanian Devil. Definitely an eye catcher. Cool sheet metal BG behind Taz but that is it. No drop shadows for Taz or the crunched metal he is coming out of. Although the overall paintsheme is unique, I would have liked it to be filled with other elements. Maybe more rip marks from the inside by Taz having one of his episodes, or even Bugs being chased somewhere or shown hiding inside the paintjob. Paintjob is well executed.
1) Design: 6
2) Execution 9
3) Difficulty: 9
4) Bonus 3
total 27
4th Place
silva playboy-27 points Themed Playboy. Another eye catcher, Good skin tones on the girly. Would have wanted to see more girls to fill the theme. Maybe have more playboy elements like pink hearts, or even a silhouette of Hef somewhere. The Paint scheme doesn't really go with the theme, but executed well nontheless.

Leadfootbuggy-27 points Red White Blue Buggy. Love the look and did it well! A little mistake on the shadowing in front, but great paintjob regardless. Use of shadows helped the overall design.

2) Execution 9
3) Difficulty: 8

4th Place
Chub Eclipse-27 Themed Eclipse. Very Cool replica! Looks like the rear wing was even cut out to match. I would have wanted the headlights and grill painted to match as well though. Still, well executed!
1) Design: 6
2) Execution 10
3) Difficulty: 8
4) Bonus 3
total 27
4th Place
Wheelnut Truck-28 Points Multi Colored truck. Yes Very Roly inspired. Multi layered, multi colored with pin striping all over the body makes it a very difficult paintjob indeed. High scores in all categories gave him his well deserved pointage.
1) Design: 9
2) Execution 10
3) Difficulty: 9
4) Bonus 0
total 28
3rd Place
Air Boston Vader-30 points Darth Vader. Well Done! Only 15 Min? Showing only the highlights gives the dark feeling that something evil lurks deep inside the mask. Also because
only the highlights were shown, it gave a more realistic look rather the cartoony feeling you get what you actually draw/paint the whole image. I did however want to see more of the dark side of the theme. Maybe on the roof having him hold up his light saber with the red glow reflecting on his mask...or even have that on the sides have him in battle with Luke or Obi-Wan. A picture of his tie-figherwould have made it superb! Great paintjob nontheless.
1) Design: 8
2) Execution 10
3) Difficulty: 9
4) Bonus 3
total 30
2nd Place
Spamcake Alpha-31 points Yellow Alpha Body. Replica of game car. A nice added touch with the drop shadows on the logos as well an extra touch on the sides. Adding the marble helped
with the overall paintjob. Painting the Grills and Headlights put in that much extra work giving it
my thumbs up!
