Best Paint Competition - December 2005

Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of November and will close at Midnight (EST) on Sunday, December 31, 2005.

Restrictions: None. This is an open paint contest.

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the cars chances of winning. Please limit your entries to 3 photos per car. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention for the People Choice.

RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Must include a minimum of 3 photos per entry.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.

Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.

Reynolds716 and Spamcake will judge this month’s Amateur and Pro Classes (respectively).

Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest. You will not judge photography skills but may penalize entries with photos that lack clarity and detail (only).

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

Next months Best Paint Competition will have no restrictions or themes.

Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Well since I've been waitign for this I'll get it started! :)

I appologize if I don't do somethign correct this is the first one I've entered...

Body : ProLine Crowd Pleaser 2.0 for MBX-5
Paints Used : Faskolor FasYellow, Createx Pearl Blue, Createx Pearl White, Mix of last 2 colors (the light blue), Alclad II Chrome, Faskolor Fasblack (backing chrome), Faskolor FasKoat (backing everything)
Masks : Hand Drawn and Precut
Class : Amateur

This was a first attempt at "streaking" for me.. I hope CharlieB isn't insulted when (if) he sees it!! LOL

http://ca.geocities.com/jeff.felix%40rogers.com/paint/mbxcp2.jpg

http://ca.geocities.com/jeff.felix%40rogers.com/paint/mbxcp1.jpg

I wasn't sure if there was a preferred size to post the pics (I didn't see it in the rules) so I just went with 800. If I need to change it let me know.

Inspiration for this was somethign I saw on someone's site. I can't remember who's but I liked the combination of colors so I used something similar. First real body I did in over 2 years I think...

h0w do you do the marbling

I think there is a thread on here somewhere with a discussion/how-to on marbling, i cant find it, but maybe if u make a new thread peeps will give u some advice :)

Piggy89373
12-10-2005, 10:31 AM
Barry, the easiest way is to spray one color and dab a plastic bag in the paint while it's still wet. Once it's dry, spray another color. For best results, use two colors closely associated with one another such as a metallic blue and a dark blue.

Like Divman said, do a search on here and you'll get some more specifics.

gone_wheelin
12-10-2005, 02:07 PM
I actually poured a drop of the darker color (FasBlue) onto a laminated paper plate and dabbed the bag into it. I then dabbed the bag onto a clean part of the plate to remove excess paint and then went to work on the body. Once I was satisfied with the pattern I poured the second color (FasSky Blue) onto the plate and repeated the steps above. After it was dry I backed with black and Viola! This was my first attempt at the marbeling and I think it came out pretty good.

Well I guess I will enter my latest creation. Its a JConcepts' Revo Body. I'm a 17 year old that is a co-owner of M&R Painting with my father. This is the first body under the name. Together we have been painting bodies for about 5 years, but only in the past two years or so have we been doing for other people. I really have only been spraying paint for a few months. Before my dad sprayed while I cut the masks. The back-round of this body is black with highlights of blue, which also give a hint of purple in the correct light. The charcoal in the checkers is a color that I custom mixed. Everything on the body is hand drawn and cut by myself and I also painted it all. Really not sure what else I need to say... Hope ya like it. This is just a small pic, three more, much better ones are linked below.

Here come th'Judge...

Now seems as good a time as any to bring up some of the rules for entry; in particular, the need for data about the entry such as body&chassis, paint used, mask used, and class entered. Also, each entry is required to have at least 3 photos so that we can see at least all sides of the finished product. Those entering the Pro class should certainly be able to follow the rules, so I'll have no qualms about disqualifying those who don't bother.

I hope to see some stiff competition coming out in the last couple weeks of the year. C'mon folks, make my job a tough one! Send the year out with a bang! (or hiss and splatter, whatever sound your airbrush makes) :D

Basic stock parts so far. My son is only 12 so I put a OS RG.21 sport in the buggy which should be more than enough for now. He was just going nuts seeing me playing with my Jammin X1CR, I broke up and bought this one for him... Ahhhh fatherhood...

The paint job, I can honnestly say, is flawless, lines are crisp and clean cut, no oversprays, no flaws... I was quite happy when I saw the result when I removed the spray protection film

Here's the first one I did prior to this one, it's full of little oversprays and the lines did not come out right in some spots. I need to apologise, I just realised this is not my third paint job but actualy my 4th. I definitly like my son's color scheme better than this one

Few career changes for me in the last little bit, and busy with a new house, so m\not alot of time for the internet. Things are slowing downa bit now and I am having more time for the hobby.

I did race all spring and summer, and managed the local points series here in eastern Canada. THe season was great, I did fairly well, so that made it nice.

Way to go everybody! I just found these monthly competition forums, and I think it is the best idea i have seen in the forums yet. thank you to those of you who take the time to organize and judge the competition. As I go back through the months, it occurs to me that a thread with the top placing paint jobs of each month would be cool.

Nice paint, you may want to research the rules of the comp if you are indeed entering. Just a tip, hate for your work to be dis-qualified for lack of reading the rules.

Please take intoi consideration the camera makes the orange look really dull, and crappy looking. The first one is a GT body I painted for a friend as a xmas gift, the other is my Drake body.

I would like to enter the following as a group, since they are all pretty much the same thing. They are 3 bodies for the NORCAL Slot Car Association points races we have once a month.

The bodies are all 99 Pontiacs made by Parma and they go on a Champion 4 inch flexi chassis. The bodies are 7 inches long.

The paint is a combination of Faskolor, Createx, Pactra and Alclad Lacquer.

The stripes lettering and number masks are cut using a Stika vinyl cutter. The center of the number 5 on the roof is left clear to show the interior once it is installed.

Class: Pro, although I haven't painted for money in a number of years.

Ok...since this is a wide open thing...why not... I have a couple bodies I painted for my buggy this summer. All in all, not awesome...but decent work :).Both bodies were done with rattle cans. The yellow one, I used XXX-Main masks for the drips in the front, and their Flag mask for the flame like checkered flag pattern. I also used RIT dye for the wheels and wing. On the purple one, I used BDLM to create my own drips. I attempted a CF like look on the roof using shelf liner.

I also did this TC body, but I can't enter it in the contest cause it doesn't meet the 6 month requirement. I really felt this one came out great though, so I thought...even though I did it something like two years ago, since I still have pics Ill share it...

On this pic, you can see the hood...the design on there is the emblem my local tat shop uses. I scanned it to my cpu, then printed and cut it out to fit the hood.Ohhh, and the chassis is a special edition Hong Nor(Ofna) LD3 Championship Edition which was released only overseas...but I found a connection and had it shipped to me here :). Only thing is, I had $ flow problems and had to sell it.

Here's another

The body is a JK Ford F-150 4 and 1/2 inch.
The paint is my standard combination of everything in my box.
The masks are cut on a Stika and come from an article featuring pin striper Willis Dormer that was in an Air Brush magazine a few years back.

This year I started racing, and all i can say is WOW. I really enjoyed it and also enjoyed being around others that have the same obsession about this hobby. Unfortunately lids with dark colors are harder to see and often can make it difficult to determine which truck is which. So this is a "RACE" inspired theme. I will be using this one on my GS SUT truggy. Hope you enjoy the pics

Waiting on Spamcake and Reynolds716 to judge the contest and end 2005's Best Paint Contests.

Mes, if you don't have a problem with it, I'd like to see you move your entry into the pro category. I think it's time for you to step up and be judged against more experienced painters. You'll only get better from it and will be scrutinized a little closer to give you better feedback.

mes
01-02-2006, 10:04 PM
Absolutely Piggy. But just to clarify is it after this competition or for it? Don't the rules state that after two amature wins we automatically move up to pro? I've only won one competition so far and have only painted four bodies total for my painting experience. Perhaps we should adhere to the rules and see how it all plays out. Following this comp I would be happy to move to pro though. You can decide either way though no biggy to me. I just love painting.

16th_LD3Furious You have some neat ideas in your body with the blue and yellow and the checker flag. You should try to add some shadows in to give it a little depth. Also try to get your rounded edges a little smoother.

15th_LD3Furious 2nd car The blue, red and purple combo looks good together. I like the carbon fiber look in the middle. It needs to be a little more constant on the darker part of the carbon fiber look, and some shadowing around the red would make it stand out more.

14th_2ndGeneration The shading looks good on this paint job and the lines are clear and the window mask is nice and straight. But the design looks like it needs a little more as far as graphics.

13th_blu-thang This looks like it would take a while to mask, the fades on the flames are nice. Your lines look like they need to be a little cleaner on the graphics looks like you got a little paint bleed.

12th_JamminJay This is a truck you could not miss on the track. The design has been keep simple but it stands out. I know the decals match the truck but I think it would be better with some other painted graphics other than the stickers.

11th_Velvettfrog The purple and orange look good together, The lines need to be a little cleaner, like on the checker flag design. And I think the gray on the flag on the front could have been left off or maybe extended the whole length of the flag, it doesn't look right just stopping.

10th_cola This is a sharp looking truck, the decals are worked very well into the colors of the truck. I would like to have seen more paint design but it definitely looks like Dale is going to race the truck. :)

WooHoo!! That's a pretty respectable finish for my first contest. I will remember to get some better photo's for the next one. I'll also try to lay off the caffeine while trimming my masks. :)

Edit: Almost forgot to congragulate all the other contestants on their paint jobs.

Well, that's it for paint competitions for 2005. I'd like to thank Piggy89373 for his work in keeping the competitions alive for us. Also, thanks to our entrants for this month, 'cause without entries, there is no event. Happy new year to all, and may 2006 be as productive!

Overall, a relatively high average standard for entries this month. Photography is improving overall, as well. Some examples still aren't there yet, but there is definitely some evident improvement.

I usually lead off with the following warning at the beginning of a competition.. I missed that this time, so here it is now: Rather than agonize over a particular turn of phrase and how it may hurt feelings, I'm just gonna let fly. Some of these critiques are going to come off pretty harsh. Don't be alarmed, that's just my deeply ingrained ACAD training showing through. Those with tender egos and/or sensitive constitutions are hereby forewarned.

13-Yendor
-group of #5 slotcars
Judging these as a set, there are some glaring issues. There are substantive differences from one example to the next - the colour fields are treated differently on each shell. If you're going to put the same number on the same paint scheme on several shells, try to set your plotter to cut it out at the same size, and then place it in the same spot for each shell. The black fade edging, while it does match between the examples, is far too hamfisted - and shouldn't even have been applied forward of the squiggle on the green shell. The strongest of the three is the middle one.

12-JCART RACING
-DaHellion
It's obvious there was a lot of work put into this shell, particularly in the hand-drawn text, hand-drawn (aliens? what?), and hand-drawn (lightning?). However... There are numerous issues that drag this piece down. The use of four different fonts, and two of those being terrible choices, not only doesn't help the overall effect but shows in glaring spotlight the flaws that can and do crop up with hand-drawn text. There are too many separate elements in use here too.. text (x4), squiggles, lightning, alien cartoons, and contrasting/multicolour window trim. Gah. Too noisy. Sometimes less is more. A good effort, but perhaps just too much of it.

11-Yendor
-slot truck
Let's count.. neon fade, side stripe, enormous ornate applique, (which is pinstriped), overworked plastic bag effect. Whew. Lose two of those, and the result would be much easier to look at - it would've placed much higher as well. With all in use, there are too many incongruities. Otherwise, each individual element is competently executed -- with the possible exception of the plastic bag effect.

10-PitStops
-MBX5, orange black white blue
A bit noisy in terms of colour choice, taking the wheels and wing into account; blue white black red yellow orange! Gah! It'd hold together more tightly if the wheels matched the wing, and there was a bit brighter orange on the nose of the shell. The blue flames and red (rips? drips?) are a bit thin and stringy... given the thickness of the sections they could stand to be fairly more robust. The blue dagger strokes need lots of practice, this is particularly evident on the roof.

9-Mel*E*Mel
-multipattern T4 -white
I think the fluorescent orange window trim is what breaks this one for me. Either that or the yellow on the nose. Or both. If you replaced the window trim with black, and the yellow bit had green in it instead of orange, I think you'd really have something there. A very tight execution otherwise.

8-RespirologyRC
-GS SUT, fluorescent, white
Your photography is improving here. Still a slight issue with the flash, but it's not as glaring as it has been in the past. The dropshadows appearing at both the top and bottom edges of the yellow/green section is a bit counter-intuitive. On the other hand, your shadowing technique is improving since the last round I judged your work. You might still want to slow down a bit though, you got paint all over the windshield. ;) :D

7-rcajsilva
-1/8th onroad team set
Nicely done national team set, with the Portuguese flag tearing through differing main colours to identify a given driver. Cleanly executed as well. I would've liked to see more of the coat of arms though, and I think to have it set more forward to envelop the cockpit. I notice some differences with the side rips from car to car, and on a team set would've thought they'd be the same - you could've worked up a pattern that wouldn't have problems with the wheel wells (as we see in the last photo - one fits, the other doesn't) and repeated it on each shell.

6-PitStops
-1/8th Crowd Pleazer, Broncos
Good execution of the chosen subject. The logo is well-done, and the colour choice, well, I guess that was chosen for you, but it still works nicely. The lettering is obviously hand-cut, perhaps to a point of being a problem. I know how much of a challenge that can be, but I still have to make mention of it. LogoText like in this case is particularly glaring if it isn't accurate. Particular elements that stand out here are the center 'O', it's sitting a bit high, and the 'S', which just didn't turn out well - it maybe looks as though it's upside down.

5-C-Hub
-red/checker Lazer buggy
Nicely done chequerboard pattern, believable as flowing fabric. Bright colour combination without being overpowering. The flame design though is far too stringy though, it needs to be more robust to match the rest of the shell. The red tendrils in particular get a bit lost.

4-Mel*E*Mel
-multipattern T4 -blue
This one holds together much better than your other entry. The red pinstripe around the fluorescent green flechettes though somehow bothers me. As a loudly contrasting colour, and the only one on the shell, it doesn't fit. It's a minor issue though, as all else holds up.

3-mes
-Wooly Mammoth
The pattern overall is nicely laid out and well executed. The orange elements though look a bit like an afterthought. They still fit, just not quite as well as one would hope. The hand-painted fur on the mammoth mural is fair, but maybe a bit too 'fuzzy' looking, for a mammoth. The airbrushed detailing on the tusks and ground is a bit too heavy handed.. perhaps if you'd chosen, or mixed, a thinner or lighter colour to use for shading it might've worked out better. Practice your freehand airbrushing. Perhaps try laying down a very thin shadow before handpainting detail. Something to experiment with.

2-Blacktiger
-Kyosho 777 blue flame on fluorescent orange
BANG! Now that's a racing buggy design. There are a few awkward spots in the flame work, but overall an excellent design and very good execution. The chequers, both sets, are well done, and fade into the orange field quite nicely.

1-LEADFOOT
-Shooting Star CRT
Nicely done. Good colour combination, flashy design, stellar execution. Not much more to say other than congratulations!

Mproy and Leadfoot, Congrats!!

Spam, now that's what I expect judging in the pro comps to be like!!! No kid gloves, no sugar coating, just the facts of how things are and what needs to be improved upon. Thanks for all the help this past year.

To all who entered, congratulations for closing out 2005 with a bang! You've all created some exceptional work, so take pride and race/bash hard!

To all who've judged this past year, thank you for your hard work and dedication to helping your fellow painters.

I'll put up the new contest in the next day or two. There will be a few changes, but not much. Thank you again to all who entered over this past year and for making this forum a great place to learn.

Barry, your entry was very well done, but you failed to include any of the required information about the body according to the rules. This may be the reason.

Barry, RespirologyRC didn't necessarily get a second chance. He's been painting for a while now, and has done so for money. The judge of the pro class, Spamcake, is/was well aware of this and placed him accordingly. So, to quote the rules:

Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

You, however, included none of the required information on any of your entries. It's one thing to omit one item, it's a completely different story to omit all of the pertinent data. The primary reason for including that data is to help one another to learn each others techniques. In fact, that's the primary reason for this forum. I'm not knocking you or you talent, just stating the facts. If you had included more information instead of just a picture, it may have been a different story.

To be completely fair, I recommend you resubmit your entries into January's contest. Although your entries for December were technically entered, they were never judged...so, I think you're good to resubmit them. Just make sure you include the required data.

Barry_Scott

it would have been nice to be warned.
But i take your point and rules are rules :-)

Piggy89373
01-04-2006, 04:35 PM
Please read this carefully and in its entirety.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
You were warned, you weren't given a follow on warning. Sorry for that, this is a pretty user friendly forum and those warnings are usually given pretty frequently. Despite this unpleasant experience, I hope you post your work in January's contest. After all that work, you deserve some feedback from which to learn and improve.

Ok so by now Piggy89373 beat me to it while my attention was redirected, but I'll post it anyway.

come on guy why was my entry not placed!

Everyone, including you, had several weeks to make sure all the required information was in place. Some even caught on and added it before the competition closed. For some reason though, you couldn't be bothered.

Now if you're whingeing just because you want to feel that you did better than someone else, you're on your own.

If, however, you want a critique because you are interested in what I have to say and/or value my opinion, all you have to do is ask. Nicely. :)
Or you could go with Piggy89373's suggestion and enter January's competition, and get LEADFOOT's input instead. Your call.

ok, so not to fuel anyones fire, But if "Rules are Rules"? then there are many of us who should have been disqualified. It does state in "The Rules" that a minimum of 3 pictures should be shown of each body entered. Looking back through the thread there are many of us (including me) who did not meet this "rule", so in fairness I think the class Barry should be in should be rejudged with his entry included, or ALL of us who did not meet the rules be disqualified and both classes be judged again.

I am sure I will get flamed for this, but if we are going to say that the rules must be followed, then everyone should be held to the rules equally.

Piggy89373
01-05-2006, 09:55 PM
Granted, that would be truly fair. However, I'd like to leave a dead horse where it's at and not kick it around more. The 2006 contests will have a bit more adherence to the rules to make it fair for everyone. The 3 pic rule has been modified so that the only requirement is that no more than 3 pics are allowed. I vote we leave this dead horse alone.
