I'm afraid to turn this thing on. I just got it back from Novak. The first one fried in 5 seconds. I'm curious as to whether a freshly peaked 6 cell pack (GP 3700's) can cause damage to the ESC. The voltage after the charge said 8.4V

Someone said this is normal, and the voltage is > for a few moments. I just want some clarification on this. I've also posted some pics of my setup and wiring. If someone sees anything funky, please point it out. I guess my deans was not tight on the last speed controller, per Novak, but there was no short.

Anyhow, everything is tight, I double checked everything and rechecked. No shorts. No wires exposed, nothing. This wiring job as far as I'm concerned is artwork. There is no way in my opinion to get it any cleaner. This is part of the hobby I love. And when I take my time with this stuff and then a catastrophe happens, I start to doubt myself.

Anyhow, have a look.

Picture isn't loading. Cheap 6 cells will peak higher than 8.4v when fully charged, so you have nothing to worry about there. If you could take a video when you turn it on, you would at least have proof that nothing went wrong (LOL).

Oh, belive me, it is being video taped. I'm not kidding. When I'm told that it was possibly my fault that things went awry, next time there will be proof that all I did was turn the damn thing on.

Everything looks fine, and clean. Did they send you a completely new system or what? If it's your old system, I can understand being a bit sketchy, but if it's a new one, should be fine. You probably just got a lemon. That's bound to happen to someone.

Well, the one I had was new, it smoked in 5 seconds like I said. They said it was unfixable. I got one back, but the motor looks used ??

It's possible that they sent you a refurbished motor (one that was previously damaged, then fixed).

Just turn it on already :).

My first GTB5.5 went poof, too, but my 2nd one has been great. Like the man said, turn it on!

To run those tires on a XX-4, you are going to need a tiny pinion.

knucklebusta

Why a tiny pinion? I know I should be using around a 17T or so for my purple 84T pinion right? But what do the tires have to do with it. They aren't really smaller than taper pins or any other 2.2 tire are they?

When the Tire gets bigger, it's like putting more teeth on the Pinion. So if you run "oversized" tires you have to gear a bit lower on the pinion size.

Those tires are hardly oversized, not like he is running masher 2k's. I ran those tires on my xxx-4 for a year or so without problems. You may have to drop a tooth, but most likely you won't. Just check temps during runs and play around with gearing until you hit a sweet spot.

Those tires are no bigger than any standard losi 1/10 racing tire. I don't have a 17T for it yet, but I have an 18T on it and let's just say that the thing is an absolute rocket ship. Problem is I don't run it for long as it's 20 degrees here, and at least for the next 7 months. Lucky you Cali folk, get to run all year. Massachusetts is the most miserable state on the planet.

At least your motor/ESC should stay nice and frosty. :)

So it made it past the 5 second mark this time..... sweet... :)

Good luck with that weather....

I run all year, just not with cars.

The folks up in the U.P. of Michigan have a saying ,"there is 8 months of winter, followed by 4 months of bad sledding." When I was going to school up there the only months that I didn't see snow were August and September.

Yeah the thing rules Charlie, thanks for all your help. The best part is configuring the xx-4 for my JRX3i, I figured out an adjustment on the radio that makes the throttle go from slow to fast as the trigger is pressed vs. before I had it at 100% I think (can't remember what the adjustment is called) but it was ridiculous. I'd pull the trigger slightly and the motor would be in full boar. Drives me nuts not knowing what the hell I'm doing with radios.

Yeah, well the instruction manual says EPA, EXP, etc, but they assume everyone has 10+ years of RC experience. They never give definitions of what these things do. Same for the manual that comes with the GTB. Excellent manual, except for the adjustable parameters section, drag brake (what is it) and the other stuff. That's my only gripe. I fully admit that I am an idiot when it comes to radios. I did read the GTB manual front to back several times just to make sure I didn't screw up. All is well though. The thing is so frign fast it's scary. All I do is break a-arms with that xx-4. That thing is uber fragile. Perhaps I should throw the ss in the xx-4 and the gtb 5.5 in the xxx-4

Well talking about the GTB. I purchased the 5.5 and gearted it at 78/17 3600 pro match battery and it melted on lap 7. I sent that one off and bought a new one so i wouldnt be out any race time and that one went poof on second run. It is so frustrating.

You may want to try using the suggested starting point for gearing that came in your GTB instructions. 78/17 is on the low side, gearing too low can be just as damaging as being overgeared.

But undergearing isn't damaging to the controller, only the motor.
