Press release:

Kyosho announces AWD Mini-Z!

Kyosho, the world's leading manufacturer of radio control cars, reinvents the Mini class with the introduction of the new AWD Mini-Z. The new chassis, dubbed the MA-010, features an inline shaft-drive system that will elevate the performance of the Mini-Z to a whole new level. The added traction of AWD means it gets through corners more quickly and is able to run on surfaces that would easily trap a 2WD mini. The extra traction of the AWD is even further enhanced with new four-wheel independent suspension. The AWD Mini-Z also features many drivetrain improvements that make it even more efficient and the electronics have been upgraded.
The AWD Mini-Z goes back to its roots with the Skyline R34 body - the first shell offered on the Mini-Z when it was introduced. As the first AWD super car, it's fitting that it's once again installed on the first AWD Mini-Z.

• Shaft-driven AWD
The spur gear is mounted on a central drive shaft, which powers front and rear gear differentials. All the gears of the drive system and differentials are specially designed for maximum efficiency and durability. Even greater efficiency is accomplished by adding standard universal-joint driveshafts at all corners. Finally, ball bearings supporting the differentials make this machine almost as efficient as the 2WD machines.

• 4-wheel Independent suspension
Each corner of the AWD Mini-Z has kingpin-type independent suspension with coil-over springs, which means it soaks up the bumps better than ever. The universal-joint driveshafts keep everything running smooth even when the suspension is moving up and down.

• Upgraded electronics
The Mini-Z has a fully proportional electronic speed control with super-smooth acceleration, braking and reverse. The transmitter is full size for comfortable control, and its digital proportional, which means the signals are processed digitally. That means you have one of the most precise control systems available for high quality RC cars. The AWD Mini-Z features an RA-12 receiver/amplifier unit that handles 30-percent more power than the previous model, which helps to handle the extra power demands of an AWD system and optional motors.

• Adjustable front and rear toe angle
The new suspension and steering system of the AWD Mini-Z also allow adjustment of the front and rear toe angles. This simple tuning option results in better handling on any type of surface.

• Huge selection of bodies
The AWD Mini-Z is initially available with the legendary Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 V Spec, but you also have the choice of many other bodies already made for the MR-01 and MR-015 chassis.

Experience the excitement of AWD with the world-famous quality and scale appearance that is only available from Kyosho. The new AWD Mini-Z is the complete package for the Mini-Z performance enthusiast and it retains all of the features that make it the most popular line of mini cars in the world.

YES!!! finally, not having to worry about the "ball diff" slipping or being too tight...no more spinning out during full throttle launches off the line... I bet this will be what lures racers into miniZ racing. .. If they come out with an evo 8 version..I am SSOOO buying it.! :D

Any idea when we'll see these?

I tried out the 1/18th scale racing but it was just too big for indoor really.
Hopefully I can get into this and have some fun in the winter.

All this mini craze just reminds me of those little tamiyas everyone used to have that were like slot cars and rc cars put together.Mini4wds I think they were called, why dont they just stick a mini servo and some steering knuckles in one of those.

stock for stock, I think a Mini Z will be better than an Xmod.

but put on the other mods and suddenly, the Xmod can start catching up, I think.

This is what I've been waiting for, though!

This will more than certainly lay down the smackdown to the Xmods. This is what I have been waiting for in a mini-z! Now Kyosho can REALLY market the R34 Skyline.

There's also some pics released lately of a newer version of the XMods. It looks a lot better than the older XMod and I think Kyosho just want to beat them at their own game.

well why not?
with 2 major companies after the same market it could only mean that these little cars will get better in performance, and which one you go for is down to personal choice.
I've always driven Kyosho so for me it would be the MiniZ version.

I hate to tell ya but its Kyosho's game. The XMods are a poor, cheap copy of the Mini-Z. They may look similar from a distance, but there's no comparison in terms of quality and performance.

I agree! But before, only Xmods were able to produce a good 4wd car. Kyosho's the best when it comes to 1/28 scale cars! I just hope that the weight balance wont be upset since all the batts are on one side of the chassis. And a small change in weight translates into a lot of unbalance when it comes to these small cars.

Here's the scoop on the AWD. There will be a one with a white body, another with a Platinum body, and the third listing you see is a chassis that comes without a transmitter.

Wow, I didn't look at this thread til now, holy crap that thing is awesome, any estimate on the price? I believe Tower has the current Mini-Z for like $130 or something so I guess probably around $180?

December 1st 2005 is the World Wide release of this product. So that means today, it is waiting at a local hobby shop for you, if they have not pre solded them already!

My Local shop got two in.
I was the first on the list.
Got the Millenium Jade v.

I was never into Mini-Zs but this thing is sweet. AWD makes a huge difference to the handling of these things. All my friends with 2wd mini-zs are sad :)

Just for reference I paid $189 CAD

Is it me or the Xmods are getting the older MR-01 chassis for their new models and the AWD MiniZs are Xmods older models albeit better plastic? I am familiar with both MiniZs and the Xmods although I don't own them and I found it quite....scary.

dugrant153

is it similar design? similar parts? (are they possibly interchangeable?)

I haven't explore that yet. It only raises flag on my part because the new xmods are 2wd only (just like the original MiniZ). You can call in pure coincidence but I wish I have access to the chassis layout pictures of the new Xmods and the MiniZ trucks. I know at least the rear suspension is similar but the front suspension is not (Xmods mount the shocks in front of front axle; MiniZ Trucks behind the front axle).

StevePond

The X-Mods have nothing to do with the Mini-Z line and there are no interchangeable parts unless they've copied the Mini-Z in some way. I can assure you, they have nothing in common.
