View Full Version : Broke 3 things in 8 tanks

I've run 8 tanks of fuel on my new Monster GT and so far I've broken three things.
1. I broke the one way in the pull start by having my powerdrill turned up too high. No biggie, lesson learned.
2. I bent the the rear tow turnbuckle. I have no idea how. I didn't hit anything that hard i don't think. I had a run away, but it hit in the front on a chain link fence. I can't see how I bent a REAR turnbuckle.
3. I noticed the front right tire was wobbly. The locknut didn't need to be tightened, so I took it off to find the bearing disintigrated. All the ball bearings fell out and it looked like there were some plastic shavings in there.
Am I playing too rough or is this normal wear and tear. I don't mind replacing the parts if this is normal, but I have to wonder if I'm banging a little to hard.
I've only got 8 tanks through, so I'm still kinda breaking it in. I haven't done anything extreme or even opened the throttle up for more that a second or two to get the heat up.
Any comments greatly appreciated.

I am still running the same bearings in my MGT for over 2 years. The bearing coming apart is not normal.
As for the turn buckles, I bent them really easily. I bought (dare I say it) **cough**Revo**cough** turnbuckles and they are alot thicker and work great. I can get a size for you if you need.

Please post the size. I'll take a look at them. Thanks.

they are right at 109-111 mm. I can't find my calipers but I do believe they are sold as 109 mm.

I should have been a little more specific. I measured from inside of thread to inside of thread. So the measurement is without threads, just the main body of the turn buckle.

I broke something else. And again, I can't see how. For some reason, the rubber tube that serves as a tailpipe shredded and fell off. Unbelievable.

i'm sure you're running your truck just fine. # of parts broken in # of tanks used up would not exactly define your bashing. probably some parts on the truck were just on their edge and you were one of the "lucky" ones who got them.. :)
hopefully with your normal bashin, the #s will taper down...

Hello all, this is my first post and I hope I start it off right. There seems to be some truly awesome nitro "freaks" on here. Dig it... I caught the nitro bug Christmas before last with a Thunder Tiger SSK. I know I know haven't heard too many good things and believe me I have replaced just about everything but the engine, that so far seems indestructible. I do beat it up a little more since I now have my TA MGT.
So to keep on topic, I was driving the MGT today away from the house and didn't bring the drill for to roto start. No problem, filled the tank and tugged on the pull start. Had a little trouble so I guess I pulled a little to far, like all the way and now it will not rewind. I thought maybe it had gotten stuck but it easily goes back in but will not wind. The roto start works fine and it still runs great. Is this bad, needing replacement or can you just take it apart? I tried doing a search here first with "monster gt pull start" but didn't come up with anything but this thread...
Man this seems kinda wordy... sorry, thanks for any help...

thanks for the quick reply. I will give it a try and let you know. Also what is the FOC that I hear people upgrading on the MGT? Sorry I haven't looked it up, bedtime now...

its a Forward only conversion. It takes out the revearse gears and takes weight off the truck

Also check to make sure the one way bearing is clean..

Well, just took the pulley system apart. Careful not to let the spring, well.... spring. Snapped it right at the inner cylinder base. Guess I pulled a little too hard, actually I know I did so I don't blame anyone but myself. Good thing it still starts with the drill. Perhaps this is a good time to get a hop up part or 2, any idea on something not costing half the truck cost... :-)

Well a good start would be.optional steering kit part #25395 much better then the Stock system.Another Robo brake disk part #25410 Also the forward only kit part #25415.I have had great luck with my MGT and these are the most common and proven upgrades.

Breaking things while breaking in an engine is the main reason why I got a break in stand. Some say it's pointless but It's a real hastle stopper when breaking in my engines.
Breaking parts is the NORM for learning how to drive.
once you learn the limits of your vehicle you will also soon learn what it can and can't do therefore learning how to prevent breakage.

The only time I've broken anything on my MGT was when I yanked the pull start too far (dumb on my part) or when I've run into/over things that shouldn't have been run into/over. It's a solid truck that's quite durable so long as it's not overly abused. Run into things with any truck and you can expect to have to buy replacement parts.

Hey, it sure beats the heck out of cars that shed parts running a straight line on a smooth surface :)

Sounds like my ofna GTP. I didn't strap the battery pack down far enough so one good bump knocked it loose. Of course it proceded to hit the wheel and shoot about 15ft in the air. You can only imagine what came out of my mouth once i realized what it was. Amyway long story short 45mph down my street, and into a house. Only broken part was the battery box and the rear shock tower bent. Its nice having a car built like an LST.

Well I know this is kinda old now but I did want to update. I took your advise and got the steering kit and new robo disk brake. Also the FOC but am too nervous to put it in yet, seems like a few folks have had problems with it... Yes the steering kit helped a great deal and the new disk brake is working great too. Helped that I changed the sping out for fuel tubing. Also I found on TA's website a FAQ section that said to change the battery lead to ch 4. I did that and it wasn't worse but couldn't tell if it was better. Anyway, thanks, I am enjoying it even more, which I didn't think was possible, the MGT is truly a great machine, very durable and sooooo much fun...... :D :D :D

did it improve something other than handling?

did it improve something other than handling?
Well I'm not exactly sure what else those items would improve but handling? I noticed the steering was much more responsive and maybe even more when I moved the battery to ch 4. The robo brake definaly makes it stop harder and faster. My stock one was almost glazed over or slick and even when trim was tightened all the way down it still didn't stop very well, and then if it got wet, then forget stopping at all. I guess the big thing is when the FOC gets installed, supposed to be lighter, faster and shift better, at least that's what I read...
I did however have a problem with a Duratrax failsafe unit. It was working fine for a tank or 2. Then the truck would stop and I would have no throttle, but steering would work fine. Obviously this was the failsafe kicking in. Would have to cycle the receiver and would work again for a few minutes or maybe a few seconds and do it again. I was like ok, week batteries, changed them all in receiver and xmitter, had the xmitter laying right beside the truck and would watch the failsafe kick on and off on and off. Instructions said this was do to the voltage dropping below 3.8v. Um, but the betteries were brand new, and when I removed the failsafe it ran fine for the rest of the day... anyway I guess a bad unit...

Thanks for the info. I checked out monstergt.com . Great site, I didn't find the FOC install instructions on it yet though...
