Hey folks, this is my first post here, and I thought I'd ask about an old wooden rigger kit I've had since the '70s, and never built. It's an Octura Wing Ding 40. I know it's not competitive, but now I'm wanting to build it & play. I suppose it was intended to be run with a "sport 40" type engine, so I'll run a longish pipe (have an old K&B muffled pipe), rich needle & low nitro. I'm thinking of setting it up with modern hardware & a modern 7.5 size engine. Anyone know if they're a decent running old rigger? Anyone used to race a Wing Ding?

You could build it but it may be worth a lot more to a collector, especially since it's never been built.
In their day, they were one of the hot boats of their era but the technology has really come a long way since then.
Should you decide ot build it, a good .45 will push it right along. Set the pipe length at 10-1/2" from the glow plug to where the muffler starts.

Thanks Ron, that's a good thought. What I may do, is make patterns of all the wood parts, and copy them, leaving the original bits unbuilt. I can probably use better/lighter wood than what comes in the kit anyway. I've had some experience cutting boat parts with a scroll saw, as I built a sport 40 hull about 15 years ago. A rigger looks like less work :) The only problem would be in finding another motor mount/sponson support like the original.

Don't know if you ever found them, but I have a set of outrigger supports for the Wing Ding 40.

I have a Wing ding 40 still in the box. I'll look into scanning them depending on the size.
