Best Paint Competition – January 2006
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of January and will close at Midnight (EST) on Tuesday, January 31, 2006.
Restrictions: None. This is an open paint contest.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention for the People Choice.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Piggy89373 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Mproy and Leadfoot will judge this month’s Amateur and Pro Classes (respectively).
Next months Best Paint Competition will have no restrictions or themes.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!
Shouldn't the first sentence say......
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of January and will close at Midnight (EST) on Tuesday, January 31, 2006.
Just being picky......

If I suddenly recieve a wad of cash and a roll of masking tape, I'll enter something this month.
I just bought a body last week, and when I found out I was out of masking tape, I got mad, laid down a three color fade (black to dark pearl purple to dark pearl blue), and called it a night. I think it looks nice, but it wasn't worth posting a thread about, so I certainly won't bother entering it.

Thanks :)
Main reason for my impatience is that I don't yet have an airbrush, and I'm really not trying to do anything super fancy. All my vehicles get raced, and usually when I paint a body, it's to replace one that is beyond saving. I do take pictures when it's still shiny though, and sometimes when it's being retired.

Some very nice work here already guys, remauld i like your work too, some very detailed stuff, the designs are awesome, and well painted.
I have been AGAIN learning a new job, after my last new job only lasting 7 weeks, I should have time to get something up... I just bought a Baja bug shell, for my new ZK2 1/18th truck, so I may have a go at that, I got a 650 shell here to do as well, I doubt i will get close the MES last one, but i'll sure have a go :) :)
Good Luck all..

red drgon, I'd like to see the boat, but not in this competition. Sorry bud, but a quick view of the rules reveals this:

However, go ahead and post your boat in another thread. I'd like to see what you've done, and I'm sure others would too.

Charlie what airbrush are you using? and after you use a color how often are you washing out your airbrush to prevent clogging? lastly with the spazstix paints do you thin them down at all and by how much?
I use my HPC-H, Eclipse, and Revolution.
You should ALWAYS clean your brushes after use. No exceptions. Clogging is the enemy. Just like a mechanic, he cleans and puts away his tools after every sue or they wont last long. My Eclipse is 9 years old. Never had to replace any part. Well..just the Teflon bushing before they were putting teflon on the brushes.
Spazstix are great. Straight out of the bottle. No thinning needed. Makes it easier to switch from color to color. Also, USE YOUR RESPIRATOR!!! Most important of all.

What do you guys use for shadows? Fasblack? I just got a better, more precise airbrush, so I hope to be trying some more detailed work.
LEADFOOT
01-18-2006, 12:35 PM
shadows aren't necessarily always that dark. How many times have you seen a black shadow? Use the black to tint other colors. The pic up above your post is digitally produced. Look further back for the original. We were trying to make a point of ow much better it could look.
For shadows that would be a "black" color, I use Createx transparent grey. Charlie uses a reduced Createx black, and some use window tints of various brands.
JamminJay
01-18-2006, 01:31 PM
so lead.. I seem to use faskolor paints. do you guys choose createx for any particular reason? how do they seem to hold up to the abuse? I knew that pic was supewr-imposed, (photoshop) or whatever, I was just curious if you guys use a light coat of black or what. Now I am curious about wether I should be using createx. I know I could get that a little cheaper than faskolor, and in sets as well. thanx.
Createx and Faskolor are literally the same paint. The same company produces both paints and just branded them differently. Createx will work just fine for you.

Charlie thank you for answer my question, but you missed one: I ALWAYS clean my airbrush, but when I'm using Faskolors I find that after 2-3 colors it starts to clog so I have to stop what I'm doing and clean it. I have also found that Spaz paints, although easier to control, also clog my airbrush and is much harder to clean out. My question is: How many colors can you use through one of your brushes consecutively before you feel that it's getting clogged? For example; while using my HP-CS, I can run Red, Yellow, and White all one after eachother but then I have to clean the airbrush or it just doesn't spray as clean or smoothly.
Thank You
Respirologyrc
charlieB
01-18-2006, 03:44 PM
Well..i use as many colors i can till the paintjobs is done. Do you clean the brush after everycolor? You definitely should. I really can not see why the brush would clog other than leaving the paint inside to dry. I guess ill write out my steps in aother thread so i don't invade this one. See new thread.

velvet,

I have to admit that the design is not mine. I saw a very similar one on a website some place, and I was so impressed that I had to try it my self.
The biggest lesson I learned from this one is the difference between transparent colors and opaques.

Fogg,
Man that is some pretty nice fading. It really brings some depth to the front of the body. And would you mind sharing what you learned about the difference between transparent and opaque colors. Is that how you made the fades so nice and smooth??

VelvettFog- How do you like the parma masking? Does it peel up nicely?
I use parma masking and have no problems with it. I have not been able to find Bob Dively's so I've been using Parma. You just have to put it on really thick and do four coats. It peels up just fine with that amount of thick coats. I brush it on rather than spray it on. I've even been able to reapply some of it if it pulled up by accident if I didn't close my cuts at the ends of my pins or flames. It dries rather fast too. I can put four coats on in a day using a hair dryer to dry between coats. I'd recommend it if you cant find any Bob Dively's at your LHS. Just my two cents.

WheelNut -- I agree with Mes's statement about the Parma LM. Im not sure that I put it on as thick as Mes suggests. I use a foam brush and put on 4 to 5 coats. It does peal up nicely, and as Mes said, I am able to press it back down if I pull some up by accident.
MilwaukeesBest (Steve) -- With the transparent paint, I felt that I had more control of where the colors blended (faded). If I got the yellow too far up the body, I just backed it with the orange and I was able to adjust where the fades started and stopped that way. With opaques, if I had sprayed too much yellow .. I was stuck and there was no way to adjust where the fades started and stopped.
I'm still very much a beginner, and I learn with each body I paint. I will continue to use the transparent colors for my flames, as I felt that it gave me more flexibility.

Reynolds, awesome looking work! I'm curious about the Primal Graphics though. Planning on turning pro and selling the body? Or was it just a title to put on the body? Your work is great, but (there's always a but) I think you'd really benefit from moving into the pro category. It's ultimately up to you (unless you plan on turning pro).

Info
Body: Mugen MBX-5 ProSpec 1/8th Buggy Body (lightweight)
Paints Used: FasGrey, FasRed, FasFlip Gold, Fascescent Copper Mixed with Createx Opaque White, Createx UltraMarine Blue and lastly Pearl Silver then all backed with FasKoat (I think that all I used)
Masks Used: Coated with LM then totally hand drawn and cut.
Class:I consider myself an amature but since someone asked me to do a body for them at the track and gave me $20 for doing it do I have to go Pro?

Lidz, please put Stalker in the pro category. As per the rules and given his level of work, I think his entry belongs to your keen eye.
For all others, make sure you have included all the necessary information:
Body
Paint
Mask (unless it's painfully obvious that a mask was not used or needed)
Class
If you have no provided the necessary information, your entry will NOT be judged and will be ruled as DNQ. This is your last minute warning to read the rules on the first page and ensure you've put the required info.
NOTE: Stalker provided information placing his entry into the Pro category, so he's covered. Make sure you are!!!
KonArtist, need you to add your information!! Last chance!
Cesarjjc, what type of masking was used? Add your info, you have two hours!!!

There are some very talented people out there and I had never imagined how difficult it is to judge a paint-off. This is my first time, so please be gentle.
A bit of house keeping, Stalker911 and Reynolds716 are to be judged in the pro class. Oh and since I need to judge this, I am going to share my critiques without sugar coating!
LegendCar (red and yellow entry) – The yellow and red match really well, but frankly I wasn’t sure what you were going for. Flame job? Also, some fades or pinstipping would have given dimension and pushed the design.
Design: 2
Execution: 5
Difficulty: 2
Total: 9
FESTER2004 a.k.a. “The Duke” – Good job on your color fade from orange to white, the transition well executed. I saw your post about salvaging your paint sequence mistake… I guess it doesn’t help the design speak by itself. One looking at the body without the explanation doesn’t really know what you were shooting for. For some reason, when I look at the the design and the color selection I am reminded of a cow skin/under belly. ;)
Design: 4
Execution: 6
Difficulty: 5
Total: 16
Cesarjjc – Definitely potential on your color scheme. A graphic or a race car number on the doors where the red/orange is laid on the side of the truck would have complemented well the design. The lack of it makes the doors look naked or “empty”. The quality of the pictures prevents me from seeing if you did any special finish on the hood (carbon fiber?). The orange striping appears to be well executed.
Design: 6
Execution: 6
Diffculty: 6
Total: 18
MrCrash - Good job on fading from blue, to violet to black. Building some dimension into the design would have improved your score.
Design: 7
Execution: 6
Difficulty: 7
Total: 20
LegendCar (black, green and white truck) – Good color selection and fade. Lacks a bit of graphics between the rear shocks and the door pillars.
Design: 7
Execution: 7
Difficulty: 7
Total: 21
Windsorguy99 – For a second airbrush body you did very very good. The blending fades on the sides of the body are very well executed. The spoiler and hood graphics don’t seem to match the rest of the scheme so you lost a couple points on the design because of this. Job well done.
Design: 8
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 8
Total: 24
2ndgeneration (teal and brown tribal truck) – Good color selection. Tribals are busy up front but the rear looks empty.
Deisign: 7
Execution: 9
Difficulty: 8
Total: 24
VelvettFogg – Very original design. Great fade execution
Design: 9
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 9
Total: 26
Hirme – Flow of the flame follow the coutour very well. Colors could have benefited from drop shadows or pin stipe.
Design: 9
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 9
Total: 26
2ndgeneration (green and brown truck) – The green, brown and black colors work well together. Well executed, drop shadows add to the look and give dimension to the flames. Here also, the rear of the track is “naked”.
Design: 8
Execution: 9
Difficulty: 9
Total: 26
1stgencrxer (Red, yellow and white Nemesis) – in less than 2 hours? WOW. Two things I would have liked different: the hood flames are “squished”… less and a bit spaced out and thicker I think would have given a more proportional look. The flames on the side end aligned… like if there was a ruler or a wall. Doesn’t look right, plus it makes the door (right above the protoform) verrrrrry long.
Design: 8
Execution: 9
Diffculty: 9
Total: 26
Aluma – Nice truck and good adaptation of the CAT colors scheme. A little more attention to your cuts (jagged edges) would have made this score a lot more. The CF is very hard to see in the picture but looks to have been well executed.
Design: 9
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 10
Total: 27
1stgencrxer (red, white and blue truck) – Still amazed you pump these out in less than two hours. The flames/tribal overlapping is a great concept. While the fade was planned, the pictures don’t really help appreciate it.
Design: 10
Execution: 9
Difficulty: 9
Total: 29

I LOVE this body. It looks so “racy” and is perfect for any 1/8 buggy. Nice job!!!

What more can anybody want out of a paint job? There are flames, shadows, streaks, marbling, and text. The only reason I didn’t give it a perfect score is because I know he can do more difficult things….but this is a perfect body.

This is a design that is done very nicely, but has a lot of room to upgrade. I would like to see some color shading not only in the flag, but in the text and Patriot designs as well…..and some pinstripes to set it off.

This Vette is very clean and the purple is like glass. The design is fairly simple, though the included pinstripe is very well done. Instead of simply tracing the black around the flames, try adding some drop shadow to give it some more depth.

On this entry, I couldn’t tell what you were going for. Is it a rip?…lava type thing??? The paint in all areas seemed a bit heavy “fingered”.

I don’t like this body. But, I think it’s because it scares me!
The paint on it is unbelievable! That Klown is jaw-dropping. Well done!

This is an example of a CFX free mask. (http://www.cfxpaintworks.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=28) For just moving up into the pro ranks, it is a nice entry. Watch your backing colors to make sure they don’t bleed through. Also, try getting some finer fades in the arrows

Another new entry into the pro ranks! Stalker entered this very cool buggy body. The flame and pinstripe could have a more refined shape. I do like the addition of marble. More time with the blade will serve you well in the future. It just takes practice getting smooth consistent lines.

Pink! :D It takes a man to run a pink truck. I love it! There are some visible blemishes in the window trim and some inconsistencies in the blue pinstripe. However, the green pinstripe is off the hook! I love the vibrant colors. Next time, try some Auto-air sparklescent “Porn Star Pink”….(then let me know how it looks—I want some :D )

There are many pros across the country that would love to have this one! It is completely clean. I will never grow tired of the traditional orange flames and blue contrast.

When my co-host (my 6 year old boy) saw this he said “NICE!!!”. Although the McDonald’s cup and mouse didn’t gain any photo points :D The shading on this body is unreal. It looks like you can reach down there and grab any of the layers and pick them right off. Again…super vibrant color! J

Once again, Leadfoot, thanks for Judging. You provide a great insight into this past time of ours.
Congrats to all who entered the pro ranks. We had a number of folks move up into the pro rank this month, and it's obviously a good place for them to be.
Special congrats to:
CharlieB for another perfect work!! You have talent like no other.
Seb for the hairy hand and a great looking clown.
Mel for the man-pink and off the hook green pinstriping.

Thanks for the feedback Leadfoot! The pictures turned out okay, but I'd say you still miss 20% of the bodies highlights from seeing it in person :D
Looking forward to pushing myself more and more running with you Pros! :D

Congrats to all the winners! it is an honor to be in teh company of many great artists!
This Paintjob was for an 8 year old boy who has been racing at my track for 4 years.
EVERY MONTH, his father pits for him along with a wonderful group of cheerleaders called his family. His grandparents, aunts, uncles, and counsins all camp out under their canopy and watch him race his T4 and his TC3 around the track. They have done this and supported him for 4 years! He will definitley be very excited knowing his truck actually won a contest! His family supported him for so many years, it was only justified i painted him a body in thanks for supporting my track since he was 4 years old. His father never hesitated to lend a hand with helpijng set up and putting away the track. I dedicate this body to litle Anthony Dunn for having a great attitude on the track and his family for showing such great support.

Charlie, your actions will continue with that lucky boy for the rest of his life. Your support to Anthony and his family is what keeps and will continue to keep your group of racers such a tight knit and friendly group. I can only echo Adrc's comments, you're a good man, Charlie.
